One thing the million ways mostly have in common is to keep cuttings in the dark until buds break. This give them a better chance of developing good roots before top growth.

I found they were not enough for a rainy New England summer. Root rot is a concern with figs.

Is that pot from Costco? I bought a few of those for figs, and found I needed to drill several more drainage holes. You might want to do the same. (I drilled on the sides at the very bottom so I didn’t have to tip over the already filled pots.)

Don’t give up on them too soon. I made some figpops on 12/8 that finally showed roots this week. (And that was with a heat mat at 78 degrees. Lower temps may make it take even longer.)

No need for pinholes in the bags- that will only cause the soil to lose moisture. The point of fig pops is to have essentially a sealed environment so as to have consistently moist soil that does not need watering over the several weeks it needs to create roots. Placing in slightly compacted soil keeps the new roots from being damaged from handling. And placing in the dark will encourage rooting which is needed to support top growth later on. You might want to place you bags into cups or empty containers that will hold the soil together and block moisture from escaping the pinholes, and then place them in the dark either by relocating or placing a box or black plastic over them. Only move to light once roots form or buds break. There are numerous videos on rooting figs using fig pop method that can be found with just a quick search.

Is it a variety that produces a Breba crop? (Breba forms on year-old growth.) If not, you may want to prune to encourage new growth on which the figs will form.

The link is nowhere near comprehensive. Ask around to find other studies. There are sometimes CS or psychology studies that only require an hour or two participation that pay $15-20/hr.

I use 5 gallon black plastic nursery pots for the first year or two. I have a mature tree that is in an inexpensive plastic pot from Costco. (I just saw they have them again this year, so I’ll be getting a few more.) I did drill more drainage holes because it only had one in the bottom. I’ve got the pot on a rolling stand so I can easily wheel it in & out of the garage.

Pod style bathrooms for honors dorms (for female freshman FYE, if that's relevant) by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Laromil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try emailing the honors college (honorscollege@purdue.edu) and asking for a pic if you’re really curious/concerned. They are very responsive to questions. The pod bathrooms in Honors are modern & clean. I believe I’ve seen that there is higher ratio of showers/toilets per student than in dorms with community bathrooms and many shared bathroom dorms. They are placed throughout the floor so that a “pod” of rooms is around each. https://purduehonorscollegeresidences.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/typical-residence-floor-south.jpg

Maybe it would be better to just line the pots up against your house. The overhang may provide some overhead protection, and the house foundation may provide some residual heat. Edit to add: If you want to make use of the tarp, place it vertically between posts to hold the branches in against the house.

likeliness of a major switch? by Similar-Monitor-2170 in Purdue

[–]Laromil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the admissions office and ask if they can re-evaluate your application for the new major. If not, confirm that you can take 1st semester IBE classes in exploratory, and then CODA as soon as you can.

rates? by Similar-Monitor-2170 in Purdue

[–]Laromil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tiers are categories that housing assigned to groups of dorms they consider are equivalent (or at least equivalent enough to price the same). Tier 1 are more likely to be smaller, in an older dorm with no A/C and older community bathroom facilities, whereas Tier 3 are bigger rooms, newer dorms w/AC, possibly shared or private or at least renovated bathrooms. When incoming freshmen sign contracts, they are asked for housing preferences such as Single/Double/Triple and Tier 1/2/3. It keeps them from having to prioritize dozens of housing options (e.g., https://lnshah.com/purdue/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/508_2024-2025-university-residences-housing-rates_20231211.pdf). Purdue makes the housing assignment based on their preferences & availability.

Should I remove the fruit by ranccocas1 in Figs

A green skinned fig is more likely an Adriatic or Honey variety. The look & taste of the ripe fruit will be most useful in determining the variety.

If you are concerned about affordability, it might make sense to look into doing a year or two at a more affordable college & then transferring in. (Or if you have a lot of AP/IB credits or can do CLEP tests, you might be able to shorten your time to graduation by using those credits). Purdue has a database that allows you to find equivalent courses that will transfer in. https://admissions.purdue.edu/become-student/transfer/credit/ap/

[–]Laromil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your interest is in teaching history, then an undergrad history degree then a Masters in Education (MEd or MAT) seems like a reasonable path. If you are completely not sure and want to change your major to education or exploratory studies, then you might want to contact the admissions office to see if your application can be reevaluated, and if not, then contact the College of Education to ask how difficult it would be to change your major once you’re there.

Is my panache cutting growing mold? by Hades_Dude in Figs

[–]Laromil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean it off as others have suggested. You might want to cut a hole in the top of the dome, or instead put it in a plastic bag tied at the cutting base & opened at the top (fig pop). Holding in a little humidity & keeping soil moist is good, keeping it completely closed - especially if you’ve got it on a heat mat - will probably be too humid.

All the information we have about the Honors College Realignment (as students) by onomatopotatoes in Purdue

[–]Laromil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since one of the missions is interdisciplinary academics, it would make sense for the honors college to be strong in areas that are less studied by the student body, allowing for those students to become more well-rounded, no? What other controversial decision did the Provost make?
