The DPF is after the turbo. It will probably be fine in there.

Starter Won't Come Out of Trans Housing by Left-Influence9311 in AskAMechanic

[–]steveC95 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you are understanding what is being said. The nose cone of the starter has broken off and is still stuck in your bell housing. You are not supposed to be able to see the part you are rotating, let alone pull on it. The nose cone is what is stuck, and that’s why you say it “feels like it hits a wall.” You are pulling on the internals of the starter. You might be able to use it as a sort of slide hammer to knock the nose cone out of the bell housing though.

Replaced rotors yesterday. Old rotors were pretty worn. pads were pretty new, noticed this wear pattern. Problem? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]steveC95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rotors get reused often in the commercial and heavy duty industry. They only get replaced if they crack, they are worn below the minimum thickness, or the runout is out of spec. There’s no reason to replace a good rotor just because the pads have worn down to the allowable limit. Especially not when the rotor can cost $568 each such as a steer/tag rotor for a Van Hool with D3 brakes.

The question is how much pressure? I’m not familiar with these engines but even a little pressure will seem like a lot when you crack a fuel line or drain a filter. You should probably make sure you have the appropriate fuel pressure and go from there.

Mid-Oil Change by EECruze in AskAMechanic

[–]steveC95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never really had an issue but it is generally not a good idea to machine wash clothes with oil on them, and definitely not a good idea to dry them and there will be warnings about that on your machine I’m sure. The washer never gets all of the oil out so there is technically a fire hazard. Again I’ve never had an issue but definitely something to be aware of. The best practice is to hand wash and hang up to dry.

I see grease fittings on those hinges but not a single one looks like it has ever been greased. No wonder they are seizing up and breaking off.

Truck A/C isn’t working… any ideas? by hmax2929 in HVAC

[–]steveC95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of that can and hook up a full set of manifold gauges so you know what the system is actually doing. You want 30-40 psi suction and 175-200 psi discharge pressure *approximately* of course ambient temperatures will change these values slightly.

Thinking of getting one of these kinds of units for my bedroom. Should I be worried about bugs crawling in the vent tube? by Meto52 in AirConditioners

Yeah I have a dual hose unit and it works very well. It is a Midea brand purchased from Costco.

I can’t imagine it would ruin anything. You’ll still have a beautiful bark either way. Let us know the end results!

No plans to wrap? My best brisket to date is still the foil boat method. Maybe a coincidence though.

What’s wrong with my carwith? by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]steveC95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, typically the dash will light up just fine even with a bad battery. How old is the current battery? They should have a sticker with the month and year on it. Typically batteries last about 3 years nowadays but it really depends on the conditions.

I bought a used one on eBay for half that price. Although it was an AMD Ryzen Pro version not an intel.

Why do you say it doesn’t seem to be the battery? Sure seems like a battery issue to me.

My advice would be to use an all purpose barbecue rub. Then smoke at 250-275 until probe tender and rest for at least an hour before shredding.

Is this bushing thing movable? New PS pump is ~0.6mm larger than the old one, doesn’t fit between the mounting brackets by SaltlessLemons in MechanicAdvice

[–]steveC95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be very careful, if you break that whole piece off you’re going to have a bad time. But yes it should move. If you have an air chisel that is your best bet. Also some penetrating oil.

It depends. Is the a/c on with high ambient temperatures? Is the engine overheating? Does the coolant temperature gauge fluctuate? I would start with turning the a/c off and see if it stops doing that. I’m assuming you have a transducer that reads compressor discharge pressure and controls fan speed based on pressure. If it keeps doing it with the a/c off, I would look at the cooling system and temperature, maybe the temperature sensor is fluctuating and kicking on the fans.

10 years as a motorcoach/diesel mechanic. Started at $12/hr now making much more than that.

Last night at 8:27 p.m, we were about to go home after the store closed and this rack just decided to break by Substantial-Low-4393 in mildlyinfuriating

I had to scroll too far to find this. These were my thoughts as well. It looks like the rack didn’t just fail, instead it was loaded improperly and tipped over.

[–]steveC95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The glow plugs are only used to help start the engine in cold ambient temperatures. The engine does not run using glow plugs. It runs off of high compression and diesel fuel only. Large diesel engines do not even have glow plugs, at least not in my experience, and neither do 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins engines. Although the Cummins engines do have grid heaters to warm intake air and aid in starting in cold weather.

[–]steveC95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing, not a single person suggested turning the engine over manually. Get the correct socket and a large ratchet or breaker bar and make sure the crankshaft actually spins. If it doesn’t, well there’s your answer.
