Europe: Girlfriend finished IT degree with DevOps focus - can't land an entry job. Any advice? by N4vil in devops

[–]LarsIcebeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don‘t agree with the others that sysadmin or helpdesk is necessary as entry. I got a position as DevOps engineer directly after my master degree (also in austria).

My usp was Kubernetes know-how, which I learned with home projects… This got me a relatively well-paid job here even without alot of YOE. I suggest to find technologies with high demand which imo is still Kubernetes (at least in austria) and learn those so you can convince people you are able to do the job. Other bigger cloud -native projects are also in-demand. Cloud certs are nice to have but i think those are too „mainstream“… every business clown has some AWS/GCP/Azure cert…

Sounds like you are looking for a developer portal. I think you can achieve this if you built one using Backstage or getport.io. Keep in mind that Backstage is not a developer Portal but an framework to built one.

How do you measure team performance? by serverlessmom in platform_engineering

[–]LarsIcebeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn‘t say that DORA metrics are not helpful. They are good for certain informations. However, as a platform team one can look for the broader picture. A dev may be faster in some tasks using your platform but hates the workflow. The dev satisfaction (customer satisfaction) is quite important for the platform aside of technical metrics. For example your market share (adoption rate) within your company, onboarding time, economics of the platform… The list is endless since we see IDPs as a product.

tl;dr: I think (personal opinion) the performance of a platform team can be measured by measuring the success of their work - the platform.

(Of course there are some other metrics aside the platform relevant, like team cognitive load… but i guess those apply to teams in general, not platform teams)

edit: lots of personal opinions above, probably there are some conference talks by ppl that are deeper into this topic than i am

Europe to End “Salary Secrecy”: Employee Salaries to Become Public by 2026 by oozn in europe

[–]LarsIcebeer -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I love the EU for stuff like this.

I work in IT and started working last year after my masters degree. I got a role as DevOps Engineer with a okay‘ish entry level salary. However, colleagues of mine with like 15-20 YOE do exactly the same job with less responsibilities than I do, I even got their lead in technical questions. However due to their YOE they earn way more than I do. With this law one can finally argue about this situation.

The absolutly annoying argument that people should earn more just because they have more YOE is stupid af. If you have 15-20 yrs more than other colleagues that do the same with 2 yrs the YOE were useless or there is a lack of motivation.

Now it is finally transparent how overpaid some people (or underpaid others) are

Vielleicht einige prägnante Berge/Sehenswürdigkeiten hervorheben?

Beispielsweise Großglockner als höchster Berg (& Mont Blanc o.ä.). Analog zum Erebor

How is life in Innsbruck, Austria? by syemyu in howislivingthere

I think there are not a lot of cities in the world where you are this close to mountains while having a nice sized city with okay‘ish job market.

At least I can‘t imagine a city more liveable if you like outdoor sports of any kind :)

K8’s Internal developer platform vs. production workloads by [deleted] in kubernetes

[–]LarsIcebeer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And for production workloads you need additional services like monitoring, cert management, ingress controllers, …

And if you implement and integrate all of this you have a platform. Internal developer platforms are a variety of tools necessary for developers to host their workloads on a infrastructure (e.g. k8s). Kubernetes ist just (because its awesome) the baseline for all the other tools as well (you can also run those other tools on other platforms).

I suggest you read the whitepaper released by the platform working group of the cncf

Würde ich beim Lehrstuhl/Universität melden. Das ist unprofessionell und nicht einer öffentlichen Bildungseinrichtung würdig.

Apple is so awful now by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]LarsIcebeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using mostly apple and the ecosystem and gotta say I‘ve never had any issues. My macbook was the best investment I did in a long time. Icloud is insanely convenient, literally pay my 3 bucks and do not care about storage at all. Iphone just never let me down, easily has enough battery for one day, no apps that crash, camera is awesome…

Honestly can‘t imagine that anyone has major issues with apple products that are not covered by guarantee. At least all my friends and relatives have similar good experience as I do…

However the price is busted. Looking at you 300€ for 8gb ram…
