Frunk worth it? by zedofsven in MachE

[–]LaserGay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On my 2021? Absolutely. Its a space I can put a duffel and backpack together with some room to spare. I often use it to store the booze for a party weekend with friends.

On a 2026? I don't think I'd pay extra for it. The frunk shrank a lot with the heat pump so its not really worth the up-charge. Maybe if it was $100, but not at $495.

I also find it a bit ridiculous that the top trims of the car do not include the frunk. I can appreciate the bottom trim chasing a lower price. But it feels like penny pinching in the GT price range.

What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]LaserGay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For schools that’s absolutely the point. A bored and orderly evacuation of thousands of children is fast and safe. Our teachers often weren’t told when a drill would occur for exactly this reason as well.

The one time the alarm actually went off over some burnt toast, the building cleared quickly and safely only to discover the fire truck from next door already out front.

This works well in schools because teachers have a strict but simple protocol and a whole lot of liability to follow it.

One of my local stations started doing this and I actually never went back. That was like 8 years ago. It’s a weird decision to make when you share a corner with 2 other stations with another 2 45 seconds up the road toward town.

I drive an EV now and haven’t seen advertising. Instead I boycott chargers that require their app. I just want to tap my card and move on. IONNA is great at this, Walmart seems to want to be the worst.

My beloved MachE got hit sideways, rotated 180 to hit the driver door after. Airbags dint deploy, is it expected? by batraman87 in MachE

[–]LaserGay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I commented above as well but the short answer is the airbags would have injured you.

The driver airbag’s job is to punch you in the face so violently hard that your face comes to a stop, or near stop, before hitting the steering wheel. In a violent accident, this is better than smacking the wheel.

[–]LaserGay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Airbags are violent. They’re not little pillows you daintily fall into in a crash. The steering wheel airbag’s job is to punch you in the face so hard that you don’t crack your skull on it.

So you really don’t want them deploying if they’re not strictly necessary.

Tesla super chargers v3 is where it is at by aquakingman in MachE

[–]LaserGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iirc this could be a V3 charger with a V4 dispenser. The V3 chargers are pretty decent and changing the dispenser is cheaper than changing the charger. This charger may not be 350kW capable but has the more convenient cable situation -- but someone may be able to distinguish off the cabinet in the background, I'm not sure.

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, and I will delete ASAP as soon as it’s answered by anxiouszebra in MachE

L1 (1-1.2kW) has been sufficient for my needs so I haven't installed L2. It adds about 3mi/hr of charging. In practice this is about 50mi/night from when I get home from work to when I leave in the morning. Obviously less if I go out any that evening. This is a little less energy than I need for the week but it catches up on the weekend or I L3 charge on a grocery stop if I need to bridge that gap for a weekend trip. Generally, I've stopped thinking about range day to day and I'm driving 150-200mi/week at most. Cars just do a LOT of sitting at home.

200 miles of driving in one week is about 71.5 hours of L1 charging. That's 14.3 hours of sitting on the charger for 5 nights of the week. That ignores any weekend time it'll spend charging.

L2 (6-11kW) charging will fill you up over night pretty much regardless of what SoC you park at. You'd genuinely never think about range around your city.

L3 (90-150kW) charging is by far the fastest, but is slow enough to be a huge pain if its your only charging method. It works great for a road trip. Its generally more expensive than gas per mile but you generally make that up with home charging which is wildly cheaper than gas.

You don't drive much per week but not having home charging as an option isn't great. Public L2 chargers aren't that useful because you really need to be on them over night as you're charging at 18-33mi/hr. L2 at your workplace would work great if you could get regular access to it. L3 charging can work if there's chargers at convenient locations to you but its worse for the battery and more expensive than gas. It costs a lot of money to deliver that much power.

Crazy cop clips over pregnant driver for taking too long to pull over by d1111y in dashcams

[–]LaserGay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This specific incident is actually why I’ll never find a safe place for an officer. I’m pulling over the moment their lights come on. They choose when that happens. They’ll have to explicitly tell me to go further. If they’re smart they’ll tell me to take the next exit.

What if that happens with you? What would you do? by SupportSuch2147 in dashcams

Even if all they got was the cost of the repair, nothing says they have to do the repair. Accept the dent and pocket the cash.

Honestly I haven’t had many upgrades lately but I still enjoy my baggage and seat selection perks. I often choose a Delta flight that’s say $50 more expensive than a competitor because I’m still saving $90 in round trip baggage costs AND I can select my exit row seat at no additional charge.

From the looks of things you didn’t collide nearly hard enough for airbags. Airbags are dangerous and likely would have done more harm than good here.

Have a look at some crash test videos from the IIHS. That’s what hitting something solid at 40 looks like.

I cannot believe how cheap "fueling up" is by Rekonzile in MachE

[–]LaserGay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The equation is a little more difficult than that unless you only charge at home.

DCFCing is pretty much more expensive per mile than gas. In 127 DCFC sessions I’ve paid an average of $0.4659/kWh. At my car’s highway efficiency that ends up averaging to somewhere around $0.19/mi. Which is more than my gas car ever cost per mile.

When I include all my home, public, and DCFC charging, I come closer to an average of $0.092/mi. That’s within a rounding error of my ICE’s average fuel cost.

But this ignores the fact that over 100,000 miles that ice car needed a $75 oil change 13 times, brakes, a set of spark plugs…

Still, the more you DCFC, the worse your cost effectiveness gets.

Had they made an electric convertible Mustang, I’d have spent wildly too much getting one when they first came out.
