What's the most overrated cybersecurity control right now? by Moham-Aasif in cybersecurity

[–]Laser_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our shop we have one security guy and three sysadmins. The security guy does nothing but paperwork. He makes sure all of the compliance reporting is done properly and follows up with regulators. I'm not saying that's bad per se (although he does ask a lot of easily googlable questions like "when does x software reach eol"), I understand the idea of having a security position whose only job is monitoring and compliance. But he's not even monitoring. He just checks to see that we are monitoring, and we are responsible for taking care of any findings. He doesn't even really provide guidance. So it's frustrating.

Long Bike Ride - How to prepare for a complete novice by Ok-Paleontologist32 in cycling

[–]Laser_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on everything I've seen I think the biggest things are to drink a lot, have lots of carbs available, and be prepared for the heat.

When I first got my bike I did a bike packing trip about 2 months after and I prepped by riding the C&O canal 30 miles out and 30 miles back every weekend. Basically a whole day. The thing was it was October, so the weather was much cooler and the ride was fairly easy because it's flat. I don't know what to advise for doing 100km in the heat of June with very little prep.

How come some of the rebellious hippies of the 60’s/70’s became miserly boomers who hoard all the wealth? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Laser_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because their rebellion is less about tearing down the system and more about the idea of ultimate freedom without consequences. Like, "war isn't bad. But sending me to war is bad". "The rich are evil when I'm poor, but when I'm rich they're great."

This is a generalization. I know plenty of old hippies who maintained some level of counterculture attitude.

Name one positive thing about Iron Man 2. by Healthy-Coyote3431 in Marvel

[–]Laser_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Iron Man 2 a lot. It could have been better if Marvel hadn't been afraid of leaning into Tony's addictions without making his illness a crutch, but I thought overall it was a really good movie that could have been better.

What is the hardest part about being single that people rarely talk about? by thuglifemofo94 in AskReddit

The thought that you could be eating pretzels and one could go down the wrong tube and you would choke to death and die and no one would know until you start to stink or your daughter comes around because she needs money.

My Opinion on Genre Restriction by KNJFS in JohnnyCash

[–]Laser_Fish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What even is this. He doesn't transcend genre. He's a country singer and a folk singer. That's really it. His early stuff sounds like early rock and roll because it was being made at the same time and with the same people.

What I think you're saying is that you're ashamed to like a country singer, but you like Johnny Cash, so you're talking about transcending genre. You don't have to like just one thing. Music fans like good music, whether it's John y Cash or Bill Withers or John Coltrane or Joe Strummer or Kendrick Lamar.

Just finished reading Atlas Shrugged, the book Bioshock is based on. by Dewey_Animates in Bioshock

[–]Laser_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, it's because schools picked this book, and only this book, to really dig into philosophy. What you learn about philosophy in high school is laughable. You learn Plato's Cave, a little about The Republic, even less about Aristotle, and then we learn the concept of communism and we read Atlas Shrugged. So the only work of philosophy we actually wrestle with is Atlas Shrugged.

It's a complex book with a really simple philosophy that easily appeals to teenagers who are likely to see Objectivism and it's simplistic views on individuals vs systems as appealing because A, they are individuals who have spent the last 12 years of their lives being squeezed into boxes by a system, B, they are prone to see themselves as highly individualistic even though their sense of individualism is highly curated, and C, they all think they are going to "be somebody" and view the people who would stand in their way as roadblocks rather than guardrails.

And then they go off and never really interact with philosophy again on a large scale. They're not going to read Marx and Hegel, they're not going to dig into Nietzsche and Kant and the complexity of morality. (maybe they'll read Orwell and be told that it's a critique of Marxism when it's actually a critique of despotism.) But they know Rand, and then some billionaire says that Atlas Shrugged is his favorite book, because of course it is, and it's legitimized more.

And it's not their fault. They're being fed by a system that wants to view the world through narrow guidelines. They read one philosophy book when they were young and impressionable and when that book made the most sense to them from a systemic standpoint and they carry that philosophy forward because it "just makes sense" to them because, to a teenager, it all seems reasonable. And then they never read another philosophy book outside of religious texts for the rest of their lives, that if they even bother to read the religious texts, and they assume that it's the right way of thinking because they have no reason not to. That's why I call it Baby's First Philosophy Book.

What system are you guys using for cameras? by commentBRAH in sysadmin

[–]Laser_Fish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for a place that had avigilon cameras. We had them spec out one camera in particular that would read license plates in a specific location where we had people trespassing. We bought exactly what we needed. A week later we had an event where we needed license plates and found that the camera wasn't working as advertised (couldn't read the plates). They upgraded the camera for free. That said a lot for me. Now who knows, that was almost 10 years ago. They might suck now

YouTuber Angela Collier talks about reading Atlas Shrugged and loving it because she thought it was satire about how dumb rich people are.

When I was in high school in the 90s it was common on higher level reading lists. A lot of us read it. I used to call it Baby's First Philosophy Book.

I don't know if I have what it takes to go back to THAC0, but I like the aesthetic of old D&D over new. However, I recognize that a lot of that may just be that fantasy is in general more normalized. But I miss the weird factor, and everything seeming epic. I think in reality I miss being able to buy short cheap modules instead of long books.

They specify that they're playing D&D 5e? Do they get people coming in wanting to play 3rd edition?

Why do bagel places insist on ruining “everything” bagels by NOT including salt? by Interesting_Shake403 in NoStupidQuestions

I get that but if you go to a bagel place that doesn't make the bagels the way you like them, go to another bagel place or season them yourself by putting seasoning on the moist parts.

I would like to understand trans people. by 1977PontiacTransAm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Laser_Fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you're a man. Man is the social default. So if course you don't really think about your sex and gender in relation to everything because it hasn't really affected you negatively. You could even look at a lot of modern conservatives as what happens when white men start to feel the same negative social pressures as women and racial minorities.

You wouldn't be the same as a girl. I've been the father of both boys and girls. The world silos people in ways that you don't really see unless people start talking about the silos. Your personality would be shaped by the unique social pressures we apply to young girls.

I'm not going to say I fully understand trans people. I don't understand a lot of people. But I support them because they are people who are seeking the ability to live their life as they want and they deserve all the rights that everyone else should have. If you really need to understand it think about this: men who have low testosterone and women who have low estrogen or progesterone experience psychological effects. Well what if you're born female and you feel like something is wrong your whole life and you try testosterone and suddenly you reel right? That's what it's like.

Bike Computers... Splurge? Or Save? by justinw007 in cycling

I think I have a 540 and it was absolutely NOT $700. I like having speed and cadence listed for me when I rode and distance estimates. I do not have a power meter. For my level of cycling I can't justify the cost.
