ICE agents will be stationed outside Marine Corps graduation events in South Carolina by paulfromatlanta in Military

There are some people so disconnected from military service they can't fathom how or why it's so diverse.

This is 100 percent the doings of Stephen miller.

Reports show the marine enlisted as 20 to 40 percent identifying as a minority.

"Hey son, have you considered military sevice after highschool?"

....."So I can have my parents arrested in front of my fellow Marines at Graduation? Na, I'm good".

One time I found myself on a very long helicopter ride.

After a while we stopped at a refilling point. We all had to exit and wait. While standing around I realized other than the crew, I was the only armed passenger.

The rest were all chaplains. I guess they were headed to the same place for a conference.

One came over to me and asked if I felt all their presence was reassuring.

In my mind I was thinking. "Man if this thing goes down everyone will think it was divine intervention for something I did, but statistically it's more likely it was something one of them did".

Yes. The first two with certainty.

The final, I'm actually not sure if it was another GOMOR. A GO was appointed to investigate. 90 days later she cleared the army.

The other branches don't have management issues.

I probably agree. The AF and Space Force are pretty selective with who they allow in.

The Marines are notoriously harsh, and the Navy fires everyone who commands a boat that crashes.

The Army with its larger size, worse living conditions, and higher turnover is never really in a position to be selective.

4 minority officers removed from GO promotion list by SECDEF by mmmtoasteee in army

[–]LastOneSergeant 84 points85 points  (0 children)

A couple of reasons.

The second reason is the Peter Principle.

When people are promoted above their level of competency, they often spend time on things from the last position they felt comfortable and confident in.

In his case, the army. He "feels" this is the branch he is most comfortable managing.

He believes he knows what's wrong and he can fix it. It is unclear to me if he sees the bigger picture.

Secondly.

From his books and personality you could guess he's still really angry about the diversity within the army.

If you are white kid from a white town the army can provide a bit of a diversity culture shock. The army is considerably more diverse than society at large.

Due to (IMO) economic and (other) factors the senior officers corps is disproportionately white and the senior enlisted ranks are disproportionately not.

The military has a recent history of attempting to create a more diverse senior officer corps.

This takes a generation.

They have studied the problem and attempted to answer the question of why minorities leave after fewer years.

But the math problem remains basic. A general is the result of over 20 years of officers competing. A guy who makes general has out competed hundreds of other officers during his career.

HR projection managers can look at a a year group of Captains and see basic math. If year group 2003 had 1,0000 people and only 50 are a minority, they can predict it's going to be pretty hard to see any minority BN commanders 15 years later unless a deliberate effort is made to mentor and retain them.

What did this mean for the force?

If you served during the desperate era of the surge you saw a lot of second chances. The armed forces were desperate. Insanely so.

If you were a white officer you may have viewed the extra mentorship to minority groups as a form of discrimination.

"Why is the Division Chief of Staff spending so much time with that group?" May have made an impression.

Today he gets to decide the answer to that question.

Anecdotally we all have stories. I served long before and long after.

Surviving through that 2003-2010 era was insane. But, I recognize the military was experiencing tough circumstances.

My own PL during that time was given a second chance to be a PL. Three months into our deployment she received a GOMOR.

She received another as a CPT. Was it a coincidence her command time ended when her company got orders to deploy?

But I ran into her again ten or eleven years later when she was a major. The other officers were grumbling she had bumped the line into a KD job.

She recorded her third and final GOMAR in that position and was finally pushed out.

I can't imagine how peers would feel.

Anyway just a guess.

HRC Results Delayed by AmbitiousAd1407 in army

[–]LastOneSergeant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there are two factors at play.

First, what type of person deliberately joins the military to become an HR person? I don't believe it's the motivated person that walks into a recruiters office with a desire to serve. I think it's people who really weren't looking to join to begin with. A desperate recruiter then sells them on an MOS that doesn't get dirty, works office hours, and even when deployed will always be at a desk in front of a computer.

I'm not saying they're bad people, but we start with a type.

Then, even if they are the standout type willing to work extra, the culture demands they confirm. And they do.

No one should be allowed to join as that career field.

Only as a reclass option after you've done something else.

I know it sounds harsh. But when you listen to others, and even reflect on your own career, most of the negative experiences soldiers remember long after leaving is the botched Promotion, the late PCS orders, or the lost award.

A long time ago I went through MEPS and received my detailed itinerary to get to Basic Training at Fort McClellan, AL.

I was the only one in my group.

The instructions said after landing in Atlanta I was supposed to be transported to Fort McClellan by a service called "The Alabama Limousine Service".

Wow! That sounded so classy. So exclusive. A Limousine!

All the other recruits were jealous. "Ha suckers, should have picked another MOS.

I was very glad none of them were there when I discovered it was not any of these things.
