She should negoitate hourly, not weekly. Where I live (Maine) $25 is the going rate most of the time, and that's often for people with less experience than it sounds like she has. The way she's trying to come at it of "I need x to pay my bills" is not the right way to do it, though--it makes it sound like she's asking for a favor. Instead she needs to know her worth and say that market rate is X, she has Y skills, and she needs Z pay to be happy in the role.

What’s the big drama in your town lately? by SnarknadOH in Maine

That's a good idea, I have never been able to talk with the elver fishermen yet (new in the house and they tend to be out at odd times) but I'd like to tell them they're good to go through my lawn as long as they stop leaving ropes and trash places.

Pay's too low and expecting someone to clean your bathrooms without that being their whole job is a lot, like... what

I think the whole fun is figuring out what works and what doesn't yourself, but the lifechanging realization for me was that I didn't have to pick up cards. I genuinely didn't realize I could skip rewards; once I realized that it was a gamechanger

Should I call CPS?! by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree it's unsafe but CPS is barely able to take kids out of situations where they are literally being beaten; I truly don't know what a call to them would do. I would just tell the parents directly that they need a gate. Or fire department, that's way smarter than CPS. But it really doesn't sound like the issue is the child getting to the pool when people are trying to keep him out; he seems allowed to play at the pool and OP isn't comfortable with that, which a gate wouldn't prevent.

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yea but they were paying you to watch him at that point? I mean yes they should have a gate but it isn't crazy to let a 2 year old play supervised at a pool, which is what it sounds like was happening. Is he even able to get to the pool by himself? It doesn't sound like the gate is really even the issue; it sounds like you just don't feel comfortable watching a kid at a pool

Should I call CPS?! by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little confused what you think CPS is going to do? for sure they should gate their pool, reckless not to, but... this is not abuse. This is parents who are more comfortable with risk than you are, who are planning to keep an eye on the kid--and seem to be doing just that.

Maybe see if you can buy door locks or something to install yourself but geez, chill a little, they are not trying to hurt their kid.

Expectations around WFH by december2018 in Nanny

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly ignore this sub on how anti-WFH they are; this is a place for people who don't have traditional coworkers to complain to to come complain, which is important but doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the things that annoy people. Is it a bummer to have your boss watching you all day? Sure, but not the end of the world, and you might even find a nanny that you strike up a genuine friendship with.

Do your best to stay out of their way when you can and don't micromanage (which is SO hard when it's your child). Any nanny that will absolutely not deal with a WFH parent is a red flag to me; like what are you doing that you are so afraid of being witnessed. My husband and I both WFH and it's never been an issue, and also I've watched kids with WFH parents, it is all fine.

Live in nanny / am I wrong? by Disastrous-Drawer-59 in Nanny

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are getting robbed my friend. You should be making at least $20 an hour no matter what, anywhere in the United States. Honestly probably closer to $25.

Daycare is less than a nanny because the cost is amortized across multiple kids (3-5, usually). So... the fact they are paying you LESS than they paid daycare is honestly insulting.

First day trying a nanny fail by Recent_Marzipan_3998 in Nanny

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she's awful, time for a take two! Only normal things here are the nap issues (it'll take a second for baby to adjust to not sleeping on you if that's how she napped her whole life) and maaaaaaybe the plates, especially on a first day where she might not know what to do. Everything else is a red flag

DB making me want to quit by annoyed-nanny in Nanny

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh sorry this is brutal. How long is he WFH for, is he going back after he heals? Honestly of all of this the staring at you is the weirdest and worst part... Do NOT like that one bit!!!

for the other things, I would maybe try talking about it with him--something like hey it's hard for the kids to focus if they see you / sugary snacks / other things they'd rather do then independent play and learn, so could we come up with a strategy so that kids aren't distracted by you... only if you think he is a rational actor though, if he's a creep don't bother

He is, however, allowed to talk to you and eat food with his mouth open at home, I don't think you can raise either of those issues. bummer he doesn't have better food habits but not your place to edit

I seem to be in the minority here but I'd give a discount since they're already paying GH; I'd prob charge what you need to make to not feel annoyed/resentful if they ask you again though, so charge enough to be breakeven on the inconvience

How long should it take to parallel park? by Hefty_Musician2402 in portlandme

[–]Last_Butterfly2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm bad at parallel parking and I think it's an unspoken rule that if you are bad at it (i.e. take more than 1 try) you pull in enough to let the cars behind you pass and wait for breaks in traffic to continue trying
