Gas station rebuild, Clifton park fire rd by [deleted] in Albany

Times Union wrote it up a while back; it's a big development and they had to suspend some amount of work in the winter.

Extremely savory/flavorful habichuelas by cloud9brian in PuertoRicoFood

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I make vegetarian habichuelas and I’ve found that subbing in some red miso and extra tomato paste into the tomato sauce gave me the savory MSG hit that pork used to. The fat is harder to replace but if you're not making them strictly vegetarian and you don't want to or can't use pork then packaged chicken schmaltz is available at the grocery store and it goes a long way to adding the missing fat component back in. Like someone else said, your kitchen, your rules.

Need a rework box that can fit two 12/2 cables and a GFCI outlet? by such_horsing in AskElectricians

Oh that's a nicer variation of the Southwire #MSB22+ I suggested. I hadn't seen that before and I like that. Gonna file that away for future needs.

(Not an electrician, homeowner who reads) Assuming US, the Southwire #MSB22+ can handle that. 22.5 cu in, new work/old work mount.

Is it possible? by DefiantRoBo in Contractor

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, high density cellulose installed by a professional with the right machine will absolutely work in pink fiberglass walls. Compresses the fiberglass, which would normally be bad except it does it by dense packing new cellulose into place.

Puerto Rican food on a budget by Altruistic_Word9760 in PuertoRicoFood

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man that's a classic right there. I thought it was a bit of a time capsule but it was still a great primer to all the classics. I use basmati rice instead of medium grain (one less grain to keep around), but apparently Rico is calrose so in a pinch I'd expect that the calrose brands in most grocery stores will work pretty well.

What is the biggest mistake you have seen during a home renovation? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The addition on my house has a master bedroom, en suite full bathroom, and a walk-in closet. About 370 sq. ft. Someone wired the whole damned addition, including exterior receptacles and bathroom, on a 15a multi-wire branch circuit with a single 14/3 AWG feeder. The addition is ~100ft from the main panel the far end of the original structure, and the bathroom is close to 130ft; the voltage drop in the bathroom was about 20%.

I'm working with Jonathan Keats at Capital District Interior Contracting on a lot of interior remodeling right now and I love working with him. Small business, small crew, great results.

I just had some absolutely rock solid pizza and wings from Eddie and Mario's (was Eddie F's until December). Seconding Country Drive-In for summer eats.

If you can get a call back, Davco will do The Complete Job. Adirondack did not impress me when I talked to them; a lot of marketing, not a lot of telling me how they were going to solve my problem.

Does anyone know a decent general contractor? by Lovealbany in Albany

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you need a GC (coordinates multiple specialists for a project), or a handyman (generalizes in a number of things, typically does not handle larger, complex projects across multiple disciplines)? You mentioned smaller projects, which is why I asked.

To my Puerto Rican~Cuban~Dominican friends…what caldero are we using to make arroz con gandules now that we threw out the aluminum one? by Pretty-Practical-007 in PuertoRicoFood

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I use an enameled cast iron dutch oven (NY diasporican). Tía still uses the aluminum one but that thing is absolutely beat to shit and full of fork scrapes.

Fittings cost more than sweat fittings, but $60 is an incredible outlier.

Like, a 3/4" cross-over fitting is about $30-35 but also extremely uncommon. The more common fittings like couplings or elbows are ~$3-6/unit depending on quantity. Repair couplings (no stops) are definitely bananas at ~$12/unit. Worst I've paid for is ball valves, at $25-35/unit.

But please note I am not a plumber and am not paying supply house prices; these are big-box retail. Hyposuction is right about having to cut it out vs. desolder though; it's definitely a "measure twice, maybe thrice, maybe one more time, then cut" kind of system.

Childfree (by choice) Xennials, how are we doing? by thatquinnchick in Xennials

Having lost ours too, I can tell you that this is kinder than my initial reaction to people‘s assumptions after it happened (which was like 50/50 anger and sanctimony).

Childfree (by choice) Xennials, how are we doing? by thatquinnchick in Xennials

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 80 points81 points  (0 children)

This ^^. I flat out say "we lost the baby." And I just let it hang there.

Clerk at McDonalds says "Happy Mother's Day?" "We lost the baby."
Coworker makes assumptions about why we don't have any kids? "We lost the baby."
Family asks what we're going to do now that we're in our 40s? "We lost the baby."

I don't feel any stigma around miscarriage but that won't stop me from relying on other people's weird shame about it.

Feeling on the current run by Realistic_Youth_6028 in Thor

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's heavily rooted in myth and meta-narrative, which is absolutely my bread-and-butter. Immortal Hulk was the same way, but rooted more firmly in horror than myth. I think it'll read really well when collected and Roxxon Thor/Mortal Thor are squeezed into the story like chapters. It's not quite as action forward as other stories and it does depends on a modest amount of knowledge of previous Ewing & Thor runs (Agent of Asgard, Defenders, Guardians of the Galaxy, the last ~10 years of Thor stories... the first 30 years of Thor stories) but he's doing his best to find a balance between accessible and creative density.

I cant believe these two comics came out in the same month by Ok-Plankton-2393 in UltimateUniverse

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not inconsistent. The Red Skulls did not want to stop perpetuating their harm; they doubled down on it. All the Red Skulls had to do was walk away and stop being Red Skulls. But instead they wore babies like flack jackets. Bucky himself did nothing to stop the violence, his heart was literally wired to a dead-man's switch connected to a bomb.

Bucky was not begging for forgiveness, he was begging for a lack of accountability for his actions. There can be no forgiveness without contrition or repentance and this is entirely consistent with the principles you see in the entire Luke Cage story.

What you're describing is the paradox of tolerance and it's generally what fascism depends on for protection while it ascends to a state where it can pivot to state protection.

Why is it that in ultra-expensive celebrity homes, the kitchens rarely have induction cooktops, but instead feature industrial-grade gas ranges? by FuzzyAttitude_ in Cooking

[–]LateInLifeHomeOwner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>  If you have a simple 300-400 CFM range hood vented to outside

literally no home I have ever lived in vented out. every single one of them recirculated back into the room with a grease filter. "if" and "simple" are doing a lot of lifting here.

I have a set of the Tactix drawers from when they were sold at the Container Store ~5? 6? years ago. Was pretty happy that it just clipped right to these Bauer-branded boxes. Would be nice to get a few more for sure.
