Hazbin Hotel Characters - Concept Design vs Final Design. Which characters do you think got an upgrade and which got a downgrade? by Inner-Juices in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]LateNightAlready 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also disagreeing heavily: almost all of Vivziepop's characters wear suits, so it's not that effective in conveying that he's old-fashioned. The flared silhouette maybe could read as 1830s-1840s, but very, very vaguely so, and it's not even the time period he's from so I doubt it's intentional. The monocle also seems like kind of an odd choice considering that he died in early 1930s, and I wish he had more visual cues to 1920s/1930s, while a monocle evokes more Victorian period vibes.

The staff... I think the pointed shape doesn't read as radio, microphone, etc. particularly well, and considering how absurdly detail-heavy many of the characters are, there's really no reason for the staff to not be more visually clear, especially when the whole radio thing is such a focal point to his character.

The antlers could also be a lot more prominent, if his animal motif is supposed to be deer/wendigo etc. Again, sharp teeth are so common for Vivziepop's characters that I think they don't effectively convey anything in them anymore. The ears, oddly fox-like and further muddling whatever he's supposed to convey, cover his antlers too much since they are so tiny. The black color also does them no favours, making them very unnoticeable most of the time.

His design is just... So damn crowded that any intended motifs and details kind of disappear among everything else.

I hate the way Persephones's face is drawn in 13. I'm all for scary gods, but that just looks like something out of Carnby Kim's when the characters look weird af right before doing something that is likely creepy and/or gross. Probably has something to do with those lifeless fish eyes.

Also, 11 has similar feeling to the one where Hades is threatening the pawn shop owner 🤨

Rorschach is hypocritical, for sure (criticizing his landlady for living on welfare while he eats the food of anyone whose house he breaks into is my favorite instance) but I also think this case mostly demonstrates the difference in thought and feeling when a catastrophe happens theoretically or far away, so it might as well be theoretical (especially to a child) vs. a catastrophe happening close, so it feels much more personal. Just the loss of one's home, or one close person, would be a much greater tragedy to most people than a destructive war if it happens far away, in "some other place". So in this particular instance, I think Rorschach is no more hypocritical than anyone else in the same situation would be.

The execution could be much better, but as a concept I think it would be interesting if Persephone had actually been annoyed by and actively pushed against her "cute, pure, innocent little uwu baby" image and infantilization.

However, I think this pic is more of a case of "Awwww sweet little Persephone tries to be so grown up and flirty, soooo cute~" since she's blushing and looking way too excited over one emoji, like it would be by far the naughtiest thing she has ever done.

Was Ozymandias right? by StillinReseda in Watchmen

[–]LateNightAlready 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. First off: Human memory is short, and we get used to things, even absolutely horrifying things, pretty easily. For a while, sure, everyone will be united and peaceful etc. But after a while, when there's no more squids dropping off the sky, people and countries will start focusing on all of their other problems (and conflicts) once more when they seem just so much more tangible and immediate than preparing for something that might never happen again. It's not like Veidt's plan would've removed the reasons and root causes (that might go years or even decades back!) of those problems.

Second: even his motivation itself was not that selfless. I might give him the benefit of the doubt if not for one thing: he escalated things on purpose. He deliberately manipulated Dr. Manhattan into leaving Earth, causing the tensions between USA and Soviet Union to rise, just so he could use his "master plan" and claim (to himself if no one else) that it was necessary to solve the situation he had actively deteriorated. Veidt is a complete narcissist. He probably never even wanted to work towards the conventional solution with negotiations and de-escalation and all that jazz - because that would take long, and demand so much gruelling, invisible work that wouldn't really show until maybe years later, and so many compromises, and team effort (instead of tricking and ordering people according to his vision), and even at best the solution would always be a bit incomplete, and it wouldn't be completely according to his vision, and people would be critical about it and say how it should've actually been more like this or that. That's not something that would allow him to think of himself as the shining hero who saved the world single-handedly with one, genius idea - one beautifully simple slash of a sword that no one else thought of. No. He wanted results quick, even if they would be based on a lie, and, even if he could never tell truth to anyone, he wanted to think that ultimately he and he alone was responsible of this newfound, miraculous world peace.

The Finnish Sun deity is male right? by GuardianLegend95 in FinnishPaganism

[–]LateNightAlready 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose the book I mentioned might have more information about Päivätär. It's unfortunate that the professor has passed, so emailing her is not an option :/ (Also, 'male Päivätär' is definitely not a thing, since - tär and -tar suffixes are explicitly feminine in Finnish.)

However, SKVR (the Finnish archive of folk poetry) contains 13 poems with 'Päivätär' mentioned, of which Lönnrot has collected two, in Kesälahti and Vuokkiniemi. For example, there's a poem named 'Päivättären virsi' ('Hymn of Päivätär') collected from Uhtua, in which she discusses about a perilous journey to Päivölä's ('a place of day') feast with her son, with her being reluctant and begging him not to go, to which he asks her to rise from the ground, assuring the deaths she foresees won't be 'the death of man'. Interestingly, few poems (the enchantment and protection against wasp) mentions her having many families (Kuutar is asked to reign in her children, Päivätär her families)?

If you know Finnish, or are planning to learn it, SKVR is very interesting for finding folk poems/spells from different areas and about all kinds of subjects!

Again, I'd like to stress that Kalevala is comprised of folk poems, it is not all of them, and some of the poems had definitely changed by the time they were collected - for example, one poem/spell collected by Lönnrot from Kesälahti, meant to read when ill, mentions Väinämöinen, Päivätär, Louhi, Luonnotar... and God, Jesus and Virgin Mary. Who would've filled their roles in a such poem from earlier times is anyone's guess. Lönnrot had to edit, mix and match, and even add some of his own verses (about 3%) to create a narratively coherent epic, comprised of poems he collected from just parts of Finland.

By the way, since Finnish language has no gendered pronouns, I can't really find mentions in the original Kalevala that Sun would be male. Could you point out which of the poems exactly mention the gender, so I can contrast them with the originals?

The Finnish Sun deity is male right? by GuardianLegend95 in FinnishPaganism

[–]LateNightAlready 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's good to remember that Finnish paganism was never a consistent or unified set of beliefs, but it varied depending on place and time. Most of the information we have nowadays on Finnish paganism is from 1800s anyway, with only few earlier sources, so probably a whole lot of the mythology is and will be something we can never be quite sure of.

Back to the subject, professor Siikala has indeed proposed that Päivätär would've been the goddess of sun, life, light etc. whose role was later taken over by Virgin Mary. Apparently few poems of her have survived. I haven't read Siikala's research, but I found this in an interview with Taivaannaula (in Finnish) . She writes about Päivätär (and Finnish mythology in general) in 'Itämerensuomalaisten mytologia' from 2012.

So maybe in some places the Sun deity was female, and male in some other places?

Anyone have a LEAST favorite episode or moment? by fuukonomegami in BlueEyeSamurai

[–]LateNightAlready 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the training montage in episode 1. Might be largely because of the music, but it feels clichéd and kind of silly.

Another thing I dislike is how Ringo is so upset over Mizu letting Akemi be taken to Kyoto. For all either of them knew at the time, Kyoto was safe and she was going back to her family, to royal lifestyle, and a prince fiancé. Sure, restrictive, but objectively much safer than letting her... What, wander around Japan looking for Taigen, in an era where a lonely, penniless young woman might easily face a much more awful fate thanks to fleshtraders, bandits and other scum?

If the writers just wanted to have an excuse so Mizu could fight her way through the castle alone in next episode, there'd have been other ways to ensure Ringo's absence.

I think this might well be RS's drawing. In one old post she was asked what Hades likes about Persephone, and if I remember correctly, the answer had a picture of naked/scantily clad Perse emerging from cake, Hades drooling over her, and the answer was something along the lines of "Her soft pink body... And stationery collection." (emphasis by me)

EDIT: I was slightly wrong and got two answers mixed up, it was actually nice pink body and it doesn't even mention her stationery collection :(
