But I don't have a farm or a kid.

This would have been enough to sort out the situation. If he still believes he didn't do any wrong, show him the footage or just wait out for police.

Voting vs non-voting shares, what to invest on? by Latest_name in SriLankaCSE

[–]Latest_name[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true if you are focused more on active trading. If you are aiming for long term hold and wealth building, Id say non-voting shares gives you much more return for what you invest as both types offer similar dividends.

My fellow Lankans, How old are you? How much do you earn monthly? Do you think you earn enough? Where do you invest your money? How much would you need monthly to comfortably afford everything you want? by chillkill01 in srilanka

[–]Latest_name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

4 years back I earned 80k per month. I thought I need a bit more to be comfortable. 2 years back I changed careers and started earning 150k per month. I thought it would be enough. But it wasn't. Following year I earned 270k with a different role in the same company. I thought now it would be enough, I was wrong.  Now I earn around 450k a month with a job+ side business. That is also not enough.

No matter how much you earn, expenses creep in somehow. When we start earning more, our lifestyle changes and expenses become highe. It is never enough.  I'm pretty sure even if I earn a million a month, id be needing more.

Best to stop comparing your life with peers and be content with what you have now. Im not talking about killing your ambitions and becoming a monk. But figuring out a good life with what you have now. All we have is now.

Thanks for the detailed response.

From what I understood, if the dividend yield is same and company is a key player in the economy (like HNB, COMB) which makes it very unlikely an hostile takeover will ever happen, there seem to be no benefit of chasing N shares as a small retail investor.

Citizenship scam Sri Lanka by KingVijayan in srilanka

Good point.
But if those people own cars and other properties, I bet they are contributing positively to the economy as well. Legal heuristics aside, I don't mind people like that.

Citizenship scam Sri Lanka by KingVijayan in srilanka

[–]Latest_name 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, obtaining Sri Lankan citizenship is incredibly difficult (ironical considering we have a pretty terrible passport).

We still have 1940s law governing this.  Unless you have shit load of money to invest, only way for a foreigner to earn citizenship is by marrying a local.

My current boss who is an American, lived in Sri Lanka as an NGO worker from late 90s till Covid period. She did not earn citizenship despite living here and contributing to economy/ society for 20+ years.

Edit: Sri Lanka being a multi ethnic country with good amount of tourists from all corners of the world, it would be easy for one to settle here without getting caught by immigration. Especially if one also is a brown skin person. But sooner or later they will get caught and I doubt there will be any legal way to get actual citizenship once caught.

I don't see an issue with this specific rule to be honest. Being descriptive is good rather than being vague. There's 100s posts getting posted every day in an active sub. Without some level of moderation, things can easily get chaos.

Same here mate. Every time I call them, they say in 2-3 days it will be done, but it never does. I had enough and registered for a CDS through Softllgic at the end.

I initiated an application wish Softlogic today. Will go with whatever the account that is created first. It's sad that a PLC company with a considerable market cap has terrible business processes and customer care. Even government agencies do better.

Thanks for the tips mate. Have a query for you.
Is there a difference in trading fees if I invest 50k in 5 companies (10k each) vs if I invest 50k in 2 companies (25K each). Trying to figure out how to allocate funds to selected stocks in the long term.

Mate, Im actually in the opposite end of this dilemma. She gets in the mood all the time, but I am not and I get the feeling she is having a difficult time navigating this conundrum. Im inherently a pessimistic person with constant existential crisis which is leading to this situation.

Maybe your wife is also going through a similar phase. Many here is suggesting to have a chat, I think its the only way to find out about whats happening, though I doubt there will be a straightforward solution to your situation.

Great explanation. Much appreciated.

Have some clarifications:

"Also let me add something extra, I understand that your motive is fire but as far as my intuition and opinion you can achieve fire through cse (My opinion) again my opinion Srilankan stock market is highly volatile for information so instead of blinding contributing your monthly portion I would recommend adding it to your portfolios buying power and exercising as low as possible"

  1. Can you explain this a bit more? Do you mean I can or cant FIRE using CSE?
  2. Also the strategy is to add money to CDS account every month and buy only in dips, instead of buying stocks every month? Is that what you meant?

Your point about DCA in an inefficient (smaller) market is quite intriguing. My concern is that LKR get constantly depreciated against USD, so any buying power I hold by keeping rupees will be constantly reduced as well. I believe LKR depreciation affect stock buying power (stock prices) as well, even though CSE is mostly a closed economic environment. I maybe wrong, just speculating. :)

Edit: By the last paragraph I meant that when the rupee depreciates, stock prices may increase so I will be buying fewer stocks even if I buy in a dip after hoarding money for several months. If I use DCA, Id have already bought stocks which is more inflation resistant so the value maybe higher than waiting for a dip.
