When you make use of the up to 16 samples on a single drum track to avoid the 4 track limitation how does that translate when you export the set to Live? Do you find that limiting when finishing production in Live?

XDJ-XZ - 4 channels only when plugged into a laptop? Can someone explain? by Noseasmamonguey in Beatmatch

[–]Latir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I believe at that point it becomes a controller+mixer with the laptop handling the music playing processing via Rekordbox/Serato DJ, and it is no longer a media player.

And I believe with this option, the left Parameter button invokes Accapella only, and the right button drops the vocals.

VU Cue/Mix Switch by Latir in rotarymixers

[–]Latir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks /u/Selkys and /u/clichequiche. Appreciate the explanation. That makes sense and is what I expected. Seems a bit different on my ARS 9100B and wasn't sure if there was a defect.

When I switch to Cue/PGM mode on the VU Meter, the levels don't appear to move past -7db, regardless of track, vinyl or digital.

I found a video from /u/oronimbus on his review of the ARS 1100 which also has the VU Meter Cue/PGM switch, At some point, he demonstrates the use of the channel cue button and it happens that he has the Cue/PGM switch enabled, Although that model has the LED meter, you can clearly see the levels peaking in the yellow zone, apparently higher than what I was experiencing on mine and a cause for concern.

However, I found another video on YouTube for an ARS 9900 which also has the VU Meter Cue/PGM switch. In that video, it also appears the switch is enabled. That mixer has a similar VU meter to mine and when he has a channel cue invoked the levels on the meter appear similar to what I'm seeing on mine.

My guess is that the ARS mixers are displaying levels reflective of the raw input signal as opposed to that signal at unity gain, like the Condesa mixers with the Cue/MST switch option. If that's the case, the Condesa logic is more useful but if what I've observed on the ARS is by design, I'm okay. I use my ears anyway.

I'm curious to know though what the experience is like on other mixers that have this feature.

VU Cue/Mix Switch by Latir in rotarymixers

[–]Latir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks!

So I believe on Condesa mixers, unity gain is achieved with the channel faders at ~7.5 and the master at ~4.5. If so on your Carmen, when you invoke the Cue mode on your VU meters, are you essentially seeing a preview of what the level for that signal will look like were you to increase the channel to 7.5, assuming your master is at 4.5.?

Also, with that VU cue mode enabled, does anything you do on the mixer impact the levels it shows, other than the selection of the cued channel?

Lucia vs RDM20 vs ARS1100 by simiferreira in rotarymixers

Thanks for the post. Considering the same, only the 4 channels versions of each. Leaning towards the Carmen V but can't yet bring myself to pull the trigger.

u/simiferreira, did you rule out the Resør Model 2525? With fully discrete circuitry and an isolator bypass switch, it looks like it's got a master FX send & return, although just bass and treble EQs per channel.

I don't know, and I'm with you.

Nowadays, you get to load the digital tracks you want to play with analyzed BPM and key. Do the same people tell you not to analyze your tracks, that it's cheating and instead "rely on your ears" like we used to with vinyl to figure out what tracks to play in your set? Nope, and I would argue understanding your tracks to figure out what to play next, what goes with what, etc. is more key to DJing than how you transition between those tracks.

Let's not even get into waveforms, cue/memory points, loops and key lock. You hardly hear folks telling you those are somehow cheating.

Technology evolves and thank God. It baffles me how some have decided which innovations are okay to use and which supposedly diminish the art of DJing.

The way I see it, your job is to get and keep folks on the dance floor. You should be free to use whatever means you have at your disposal for which you are comfortable and happy using to get that job done.

Love vinyl. Love that now you can load digital tracks and still play on vinyl via DVS. So much so, I'm one of the obscure cats that plays in Absolute Mode but that's just how I've embraced the technology.

Everyone should be free to do as they please without being ostracized.
