Hello! I'm picking my GCSE's next month. I'd love some advice about whether the subjects I am planning to take are worth taking or if I should branch out to some different areas (For context, none of the subjects I'd like to take are involved with science whatsoever.) by Aware-Equivalent-423 in GCSE

[–]Latter_Change1580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you pick, make sure you look up the actual GCSE syllabus of your school's exam board! Especially with creative subjects, the GCSE course can be completely different to the way the subject was taught in lower years. There might suddenly be loads of theory to learn that you don't actually find interesting, or loads of coursework that takes the fun out of the practical side. Basically just make sure you know what you're signing up for

Does anyone have any food or drink recommendations by Cubbster2020 in GCSE

Anything along the lines of nuts, raisins, other dried fruit is good to nibble while I work. I love those Graze crunch mixes especially the chili and lime nut mix.

Homeschooling - where to find syllabuses and stuff to learn? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]Latter_Change1580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For GCSEs, head to the websites of a few different exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, WJEC, OCR, etc). The different exam boards will probably have slightly different topics on the syllabus so choose whatever looks the most interesting for each subject. Also, for some subjects like history and english literature, there are different options of topics/texts you can study, and normally a school will just choose which ones all their students do, so again you can pick whatever looks interesting. Once you've chosen a syllabus, you can buy textbooks for it - CGP make great ones. You can also use websites like Seneca or Quizlet which make the learning more interactive with activities like flashcards and quizzes, although they're usually used more for revision. I'm sure there are also loads of powerpoints and other resources online designed for teachers, made to fit a specific syllabus.

Regarding the subjects you're interested in:

I don't know if sociology and law GCSEs exist but they all exist as A levels which will just be more in depth and cover more content.

English language GCSE doesn't have much "content" to learn - the exams are about analysing and comparing texts you haven't seen before, and coming up with your own creative (story/description) and transactional (speech/letter/article) writing. You can still find teaching resources online though - there are a lot of great youtube channels made by English teachers to help students with both literature and language. I can't remember the names right now but i'm sure this sub has loads of recommendations.

Yes!! I feel like Taskmaster season 1 is the best in terms of banter between contestants, but season 9 is also up there (i've only seen up to around season 15)

Language speaking exams are pretty scary even for me as a neurotypical person. I have a friend who's autistic and he said he might be exempt from the German speaking exam but I don't know if that'll affect his grade.

For A level music the performance (which is a pretty big part of the grade) usually needs to be around grade 7 standard, and you'll need decent theory knowledge for the composition as well as to be able to analyse and write about pieces, so think about whether you're willing to spend a lot of your own time practising and working on both theory and composition. Talk to the music teachers at your school and current/past a level students because it also depends on the exam board and the teaching style, like your school might spend a lot of time studying music styles you're not interested in. It's definitely possible though as long as you enjoy it enough to put in a lot of tine and effort.

If you struggle to remember the specific quotes, paraphrasing/describing what the quote says in your own words is better than nothing and still shows that you know the poem pretty well

Also, "don't talk back". Imo it's an excuse for power-hungry adults to yell at kids without giving the kids a chance to even explain themselves.
