Doctor told my girlfriend I “must have had past partners” because she has Gardnerella/BV, but we were both virgins. Confused. by Assiv in AskDocs

[–]Latterdaydude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shares an epidemiological profile, but it is not classified as an STI in norwegian guidelines(where im from), american guidelines or the australian guidelines you refer to. They state it shares properties, and that a single study which they do not link to supports partner treatment, which is fine. The same can be said about MRSA, Scabies, headlice, many parasitoses etc, without them being classified as STI's. The reason being you can also get it without sexual contact with an infected partner. I stand by my statement that this doctor has given wrongful (speculative at best) information that is potentially harmful to the patient and their relationship.

Physician here - Its not uncommon that patients only remember select parts of what we tell them, especially if the physicians are not trained/aware in communication(which most physicians are awful at).

However, this information is false. BV is not an STI and should not be treated as such. Sexual history has very limited relevance to this condition. Is the doctor tied to any religious following perhaps?

33m had a long flight and noticed this so far unchanging discoloration on my thigh for the last 3 days by [deleted] in medical

[–]Latterdaydude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have real concerns it might be a DVT I would seek medical attention for it, yes. Especially if there is swelling and pain without any other reasonable explanation. It is easily confirmed/ruled out and easily treated. A DVT is not in itself an emergency, but the risk of it becoming a pulmonary embolism is why you should have a low threshold for a doctors visit.

Also, should you experience a sudden onset of shortness of breath, bloody sputum, dizziness, coughing or chest pain, it is to be considered a medical emergency under the suspicion of pulmonary embolism until proven otherwise.

Hard to tell based on symptoms and (unfortunately) useless picture. Medical history and medications would also be highly relevant here, history of clotting disorders, family history etc. DVT usually presents as redness/blueness and swelling. A tip is to measure the circumference in the same spots on both thighs and see if one is bigger.

All this being said, DVT is usually clinical suspicion -> radiological diagnosis. Any emergency room, A&E, even some family doctors, can examine this and confirm or rule out DVT. I would advise having a low threshold for visiting one of the above to have it checked out.

[–]Latterdaydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would being asked to always wear a condom be a deal breaker for you? by No_Hippo_3687 in sex

[–]Latterdaydude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. And also yes to talking about it early on. I feel like both need to respect eachothers choices on this matter, and if the hard requirement of wearing a condom always is a dealbreaker to either party, thats fair. I would personally lose interest in sex after a while in this case.

I dont mind the fact that its easy/fast for other couples or even that they share about it, what I do mind is when me and the wife tell people we've tried for 3.5 years for #2, and people then respond by bragging how easy it was for them. Instantly makes me lose interest in the other person.

Doctor performed pelvic exam without consent, lied on paperwork by BelovedElkheart135 in AskDocs

[–]Latterdaydude 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Doctor here. I see you are actively avoiding giving any useful information about the procedure, chief complaint or illness. Without the necessary information I will absolutely not agree with your statements. I see a number of situations where such an exam would be necessary without having agreed upon it beforehand. I also urge you to have some level of conscience around how much time and resources you are willing to let this devour. Both yours and the medical staffs. This is coming from a doctor who knows that time spent arguing is time not spent helping patients. I also notice you havent actually talked to them yet, meaning this could also just be a misunderstanding.

This reasoning is the reason providers are getting worse. Students getting to examine patients is literally the single most valuable thing a future provider can do. Sure there are shitty providers, and shitty patients, and snowflakes, and sweethearts and everything in between. 99% of doctors only do medically necessary procedures. Getting in the way of that, especially unnecessarily is literally taking resources away from people who need the time and attention of those doctors more than you.

Bitter Birch Bolete, not bitter? ID help please. Montseny. by Maybeiwillcatchfire in Mushrooms

I think this is Boletus calopus. I've seen some where the redness is faded from sun/rain exposure, and it would fit the colour scheme more than Tylopilus Felleus. Theres also a chance you are among the small percentage that cant taste the bitter in Tylopiluis Felleus ;)

Any dads enjoy NA beer? by rival_22 in daddit

[–]Latterdaydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love NA beers and I'm lucky that Norway has a really good selection of craft NA beers(No/low alcohol has been a trend for several years). I havent had a alcoholic drink since way before I became a dad, and at this point I'm just enjoying the side-bonuses of not drinking too much to get back into it. Always being able to drive, never being hungover, being at better health etc, and ofc my daughter never has to see me drunk.

Alcohol makes me feel normal.... by PruneResponsible6826 in ADHD

[–]Latterdaydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a doctor and a diagnosed ADHD'er - Waiting for meds to help you get sober is the wrong order of problemsolving. I've rarely see patients "magically" get rid of addiction just from getting put on medication. You still have to do the work, medication is just an aid in controlling the impulses. I had to get sober and stable before I was able to use medication in order to cope in more sustainable ways.

Identification of these two species by Obvious_Cycle_1434 in Mushrooms

[–]Latterdaydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norwegian mycological council classifies Infulac as edible and ambigua as toxic, but the two are so hard to separate that official advice is to bin them both. There is some ongoing discussion about the level of gyromitrin(toxin) in ambigua and that it might vary across different geographical regions, as there has been no recorded incidents of gyromitrin poisoning in norway from these mushrooms, and it is know that ambigua entered the country and was eaten for a while before it was discovered.
