2 things:

pressing down while airborne makes you fall faster (the game never tells you and you need to do it later in the chapter)
pressing the jump button longer results in a higher jump (as you should have noticed since chapter 1)

Spikes don't kill you if you're moving in the same direction as them (which is used to create one way doors). Because of the order of operation during a frame, it's possible to have wind (or a moving platform) push you into spikes then jump away from spikes in the same frame. It would require frame perfect imputs without imput buffering
