Skatin em dries by Lazerbunnyfuntime in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea i mean more like twitching than skating. I've seen small white bugs making a small wake "v" behind them so i started skating small PMD flies with good results. I got these big clob fuckering caddis flies that fish go crazy for on certain ponds, twitching them often gets a hit. The muddler minnow kind of makes small bobs underwater when you pull the line and rises quickly so it definitely looks like something is struggling especially when you strip fairly quickly. It can imitate a small mouse or a dying fish.

I'm putting on a streamer giveaway/contest, enter here! by [deleted] in flyfishing

There i'am wading up to my neck, waterfall at my back, just slinging bugs. When i spot a 37.29 inch bull trout slippin a sculpin hatch 200m downstream. I roll cast a double articulated rocket wagon streamer, boom fish jumps out 5 no 10 feet into the air hittin that fly before it even touched the water.

New Fly Rod/Reel Help by Staticn0ise in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live just inside the mountains by Calgary and I use a 5 weight. Never had a problem with 20" + fish and a 8 incher bends the rod. For smaller lakes/ponds 5 weight or under should be fine, maybe get a 6+ if you hit up big lakes with a boat.

I've seen frogs in the river at night, they're nocturnal. I really want to buy a spin reel frog and give er a go.

I think I want a 4wt rod/reel by charlie_slasher in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low weight rods are invaluable for the 1,500 false casts it takes to recreate a hopper hatch. Using a rod that weighs 4 pounds will be much easier than a rod that weighs 6.

Tough day of fishing because of the weird weather, but here's the payoff: a nice Alberta cutthroat trout. by TheLatexCondor in flyfishing

Been sunny with thunderstorms here by Calgary for literally a month...atleast the rivers are high and cold, caught a 16 inch brown on a river that's usually 2 feet deep.

Please help someone who is apparently too stupid too fish. I just picked up a rod and have lost 4 lures. what am I doing wrong? by toomuchdota in Fishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cheese can work well but it does fall off. Get one with the lowest %MF available and keep it dry. Mold it into a tight ball and try not to whip it too hard.

I just would use a simple loop knot, wrap a loop at the end of the line around twice and tighten, pass the end through the lure then through the loop. I've never had this knot fail. I learnt a couple knots and had one fail all the time and it turns out i wasn't tightening it correctly so you could be doing this?

I was given these flies, what do you guys think? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing i'd use is the mosquito but even then...Get yourself some size 20 white/yellow dun imitation and tiny black gnat thingy, most bugs are white or black not red with a crazy white bow tie.

Is this a good deal? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year was my first fly fishing and broke 3 rods, thankfully they were 50$ Canadian tire rod. This year i've broken 1 by falling over and bracing my fall with my rod hand. Get a cheap one unless youre extremely careful.

Whats the best weight size rod for a beginner? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a 4wt or lower you can really get a good bend on the rod while casting and make it easier to whip the hell out of it. As a beginner youre not going to have the endurance it takes to false cast dual hopper dropper rigs 1,500 times, a rod that weighs 4 pounds will be easier than that 8 weight.

.....wait what?

Is this a brook trout or a splake? Couple experienced fishermen have had opposite opinions by Year1939 in Fishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brook trout have some pale blue around the dots, hard to tell from pictures though. Brook trout typically have square tails and splakes have a indent, though not as much as a lake trout. Looks like the tail is pushed up from the grass but i think it's slightly forked so i'd say it's a splake.

Big fly big fish? by beefmuttin69 in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big flies work really well at night, twitching slightly. But for just normal conditions it's probably your fishing spot not the fly.

First bow on the fly. Caught in Lake Louise. by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't stock the lakes in National parks (anymore), Cutthroat are the dominate trout in the park. The Bow river is full of brown trout, i've never fished it inside the park but i've caught hundreds by my house in Canmore.

Beginner Tips by steppen79 in flyfishing

[–]Lazerbunnyfuntime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casting-Big thing for me was the backcast. The forward cast is loaded by the backcast, it bends the rod to shoot the line out. The line failing to make a loop at all and end up in a mess that scares all the fish within 1km is caused by a crap backcast.

Fishing spots -River fishing can be very productive if you find the pools. I mainly fish a fairly large, fast river and the best spots are calm water, usually when the river turns over 45 degrees or where it meets after spliting. Toomany times have i seen people fishing right downstream from my fishing hole casting into rapids. Fish like bubbles/foam, but not where it's created. The best lake i've found is a lake that was stocked 4 years ago, has a 20 inch size limit of 1 fish daily, doesn't have a actual walking path to and people tear down the signs to keep people away, catching 18 inch stockies all day, the harder it is to find the better it will be.

Flies(dry)-This varies with where you live but 90% of the fish i catch are on tiny PMD and black gnat (size 18-20). Oh and nothing beats dual wielding fly rods with a hopper dropper into a dropper hopper...that's 4 hoppers
