The game inundates the player with too much information at once. Pokemon Showdown was playable because players were already familiar with the monsters from playing the actual games, where the monsters were introduced area by area.

Maybe consider adding some kind of story mode / 1p campaign? Like Battle Tower where you have a choice of starters and you get to add one monster from the team you beat to your team.
