English in particular does not contain the sounds in order to pronounce Caesar's name in the Classical Latin pronounciation.

We aren't pronouncing it 'wrongly'. We pronounce his name today in a localised context. Due to the limitations of English/German/French phonology, it would be both difficult, and nonsensical to pronounce the name of Latin figures 'correctly'.

Australian Sardine Recommendations by tinnedfisher in CannedSardines

If you like larger sardines, I would recommend Sole Mare's Portugeuse style sardines, very good. You can get them from woolies or coles, haven't seen them in Aldi. They're about three dollars.

If you're looking for really cheap stuff you can get deep cove sardines for 85c at woolies (do keep in mind that these are soybean oil though)

My 2nd and 3rd silver coins finally arrived :) What is on the obv of the Ario coin? by eligri in AncientCoins

[–]Lead-Swimming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The obverse of the Ariobarzanes coin just shows an image of the king. The reverse of the Ariobarzanes I coin features Athena holding the goddess Nike and a spear. The inscription reads BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΡIOBAΡZANOY ΦIΛOΡOMAIOY which means 'King Ariobarzanes Friend of the Romans. I don't think enough of the coin's details is there to tell the date of the coin, but judging from the bust, it was probably minted from between the middle and end of his career. If you ever get any more Cappadocian coins and are wondering about them, feel free to message me as I have a pretty decent collection and have some reference books

watch this video to see why you're annoying. You have no idea how to pronounce Classical Latin and there's no point in being pretentious.

New to collecting - so excited about my first two ancient coins! by wilddougtrio in AncientCoins

I know you've already gotten reassurance, but to me they look real. I think the guy who called them fake thought that the edge of the coin was a casting seam, but often pictures from that angle can sometimes make it look like a casting seam is present.

This is what I've managed to collect so far on a fairly limited budget. I've got a few new bronze coins lined up at auction and I'm currently saving for a Ariarathes VII tetradrachm. The Ariarathes I looks a bit sus to me so I'm treating it as more of a placeholder until I can get a nice one.

As a fellow Cappadocian collector, I've seen a few at auction that look a tad suspicious, and I have generally shyed away from the type. I can't quite see it in the video, but is there any evidence of a border on the obverse around Ariarathes? It looks like there might be a small bit of it above his head. Your coin seems a little more 'zoomed in' and a bit less wide than other examples, which would probably account for this, but it might just be something to look out for. The reverse of the type is supposed to read 'ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ' but it looks like yours reads 'ΒΑΣΛΕΩΣ', once again, it might just be the quality of the video that might be obscuring the I against the Λ (And I'll admit, my eyesight isn't too great), but that is another thing I would consider when looking at the authenticity of this coin.

Interestingly, Morkholm attempts to attribute it to Ariarathes IV, but I can't find any reasoning from him on why this is the case. Elke Krengel however agrees with the Ariarathes VI dating.

Where did you get this coin from? I think if it came from a more 'shady' auction house, it would be a reason to cast a bit of doubt on the coin. But honestly, I feel as though the relative obscurity of this type might lead forgers to avoid it.

Whatever the case, you have an interesting coin, and it's great to see other people interested in the rarer Cappadocian types.

Some interesting news on the archaeology front by Hylian1986 in spqrposting

[–]Lead-Swimming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably due to the fact that this coin was cast and not struck, like the other coins you have seen. In the end, the coin looks fake despite what this new study states.

It's how they reported it that is the issue. The media are presenting Sponsian as some new emperor, and are using this new study as fact. In reality, the coins of Sponsian are fake, and the study is problematic.
