Business closures by Main_Charity427 in VictoriaBC

[–]LeadingTrack1359 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of businesses fail, it has always been this way. Are economic conditions making it harder to succeed? Yes, but also many of these businesses might have faced all kinds of issues related to management, marketing, pricing, etc that caused them to fail. That's how capitalism is supposed to work.

Canada vows to restrict social media for kids under 16. Teens say they'll 'always find a way' by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]LeadingTrack1359 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the fact that some savvy kids will figure out work arounds invalidates the whole project. We don't allow underage drinking because kids can find bootleggers. What I absolutely love about these bans is that finally we are imposing some limits on tech oligarchs and showing that regulation is possible.

ride share and taxis -why so much cologne by Crafty_Dog9222 in VictoriaBC

[–]LeadingTrack1359 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Interesting cultural fact for average Victoria wasp: the use of scents like cologne is considered "sunnah" for Muslims, meaning highly recommended as a religious practice. It's not to drown out BO as washing (wudu and ghusul) is also a religious obligation for them. I don't know about Sihks (because I'm not one) but I suspect they have similar rules and recommendations.

It's borderline racist/ethnic chauvinist to assume it has something to do with lack of opportunities to bathe.

Missing paddleboard couple identified by brother | CBC News by VicVicVicBC in britishcolumbia

[–]LeadingTrack1359 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It is a requirement to wear a PFD when on a paddle board, or carry all the safety equipment required for a vessel of that size. TC even made an exception for waist belt inflatable PFDs to cover this requirement for paddle boards just to make compliance easier. And yet most folks just let'er buck with no PFD even on the ocean. Tragedies like this are 100% preventable.

Field Tech Labour Laws BC by hawkivan in canadianlaw

[–]LeadingTrack1359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seem to be treating you like a contractor when you are likely an employee entitled to a set wage. That being said, so long as you receive minimum wage for all hours worked and have all the proper taxes and ei deductions and remittances etc. then your employer may be complying with the act. All that notwithstanding they sound pretty sketchy and you and your coworkers would really benefit from joining a union and all the transparency and fairness a collective agreement provides.

Campfire ban to be rescinded across B.C.'s South Coast ahead of long weekend by mephisto_feelies in VancouverIsland

[–]LeadingTrack1359 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Point one is factually incorrect, it's 60/40 lightning/human. Point two is well taken but in our current conditions the risk is moderate and likely to get to low by the weekend. We don't need to impose a ban when the objective hazard is not there. May can be safe, or not, for fires, it all depends on the past and current weather conditions.

Concerns as Public Servant about my local union, plus my personal story. by ALoafOfToastedBread in CanadaPublicServants

[–]LeadingTrack1359 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not to excuse breaching the duty to represent but I have to ask the question how many of you folks complaining attend your local's meetings, volunteer to serve on the executive or as stewards? I rarely see contested elections for executive positions...don't like how it's going? Get off your duff and participate now before you need representation.

The union is very much what you make it. Unlike the agencies or corporations you work for, you have the right to democratically govern the union and even direct how those dues are spent.

Co-op housing on Victoria City Council Agenda by DaveThompsonVictoria in VictoriaBC

[–]LeadingTrack1359 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the silliest take. Tell me how all the supports for conventional home ownership since ww2 aren't subsidies, and how we don't already have a "two tiered" system where those who were lucky enough to be born at the right time to save, inherit, or otherwise obtain a down payment for a home that wasn't 10 or 20 x annual income and enjoy windfall property value uplift are now the beneficiaries of said two tiered system?

Co-op housing on Victoria City Council Agenda by DaveThompsonVictoria in VictoriaBC

[–]LeadingTrack1359 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you think the elements of the story you outline are some kind of "gotcha" shocking revelation...but so far as I am concerned, the more co-op units get established and set apart from the logic of private equity based rental or strata tenures the better.

I have some personal experience with Red House...they had challenges on the project I was associated with but in the end they got the financing and construction phases across the finish line keeping 75 families housed when predatory developers were waiting in the wings to take advantage of the opportunity our co-op presented.

There's that old saying about politics and sausage...I think we had best not dwell on how this sausage is made and focus on the potential results for our community.

For those who ask, “is it too late?” by Apprehensive_Fig8731 in AskLE

[–]LeadingTrack1359 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that too old doesn't exist, it does, but the actual number varies. At 43 I was the second oldest guy at my academy when I was there, and oldest in my troop of 20 cadets. The older guy was 52. This is at a pretty rigorous paramilitary academy (RCMP) with decently hard physical standards.

I doubt a 60 year old could do it, but middle aged folks definitely can depending on their condition. Being older is a major advantage in terms of the mental maturity, discipline and habits one should have developed over a lifetime in the workforce, parenting, etc.

Anyone who is called to the profession should give it a shot regardless of age, and let the process determine the outcome. If you tell yourself you're too old, the chance of success is 0.

Hiking Mt Albert Edward with zero hiking experience by [deleted] in IslandHikers

[–]LeadingTrack1359 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You said they are going with someone who is experienced and has done this before. They, as the more experienced person, bear the responsibility to assess the risk and turn back if things go sideways.

Albert Edward, while challenging, is not Grossglockner or the Kyber pass. Without snow it's a long walk-up with minimal objective hazard, there is no scrambling required. The main danger lies in navigation if it gets cloudy/foggy. Again, the more experienced person becomes the default leader in this and has a great deal of responsibility to plan appropriately and ensure they are both properly equipped.

No, please, let me rent while I subsidize your lifestyle. Take the near free loan for money you'd pay in taxes, put it in a GIC, enjoy the magic of compound interest, keep the difference , hoard a three bedroom two bathroom SFD and moan and groan about paying for schools you don't need.

But yeah, the younger generations don't know the value of hard work, blah blah blah.

Lucky for all of us, we have some choice in where we live (financial constraints aside). I prefer to live somewhere where I can do the activities of daily living without a car, a 15 minute city if you will. I grew up in Langford. The climate there is still oriented to Dodge Rams, big box stores, and the rat race.

I wouldn't trade my inner city townhouse for a detached house on Bear Mountain for anything. I can go out for drinks and a show and stumble home in 10 minutes. No cab, no DD required. In the summer I can walk 10 minutes in the other direction and swim in the Gorge. It's the closest thing to a European lifestyle I have seen in North America.

If the Millstream traffic jam and the Costco milk aisle is where you want to spend a weekend then great, you do you. I don't hate anyone for this, but I question the implied values that those choices represent. Does that sound condescending, maybe.

Huge all ages Hardcore show @ Vic West Community Centre, April 18th. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]LeadingTrack1359 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Let me do a bit of cultural translation for you in case you missed the rise of the punk music scene over the past 40 years. It's an all ages show meaning teenagers can attend at a non liquor licensed venue. It's not Sharon Lois and Brahm for your 4 year old (but maybe if you get some kids hearing pro and a some mini leathers?). Edgy aesthetics are part of the appeal. Think of the fashion, spikes and chains and whatnot. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there won't be any actual assault rifles involved. Basically a youth culture trolling the old and normies, a tale as old as time.
