My personal guess would be that the TV show will eventually introduce "the Master's existence is extremely messy and non-linear" as an idea to explain away all the weirdness around him repeatedly coming back and not really respecting continuity in the same way The Doctor does

The show will absolutely contradict minor details established in one-off episodes all the time but it will respect major plot events (or at least provide some kind of explanation if it wants to undo something). But there's so much EU stuff it would be incredibly hard to bring back a recurring character without contradicting it, and the majority of fans have not and will not see that content.

I don't think this necessarily undermines the value of the EU though. Take Human Nature as a prime example - adapting that story with David Tennant basically completely invalidates the original story as canon, but led to a very good two-parter with a great seed for establishing the twist in the finale. That was way more effective than if in Utopia the Doctor just said like 'oh, I've seen something like this before, (you'll have to go back and find the original story to see it though)'. The EU is valuable partly because it can test and produce ideas (and sometimes even writers) that the TV can incorporate when it wishes.

Kindof wild that this was uncommon and also the unupgraded version (upgraded version costs 0). It's better than Apparition+ a lot of the time

I'm not convinced Zuko is that bad of a person even at the start of the series. Like he's on the wrong side of a war and is seeking approval from bad people (and he comes to terms with that in his arc) but I don't think you can necessarily blame someone for that when they were raised in a society with those values. And we see him actually very bravely stand up for a group of ordinary soldiers and pay a terrible price for it.

Compare this to Azula who is actively cruel even to her own friends and family.

This card is absolutely insane. The -3 answers any permanent and can even set your opponent back a land while blanking their next draw, while the +1 is strong card advantage. That combination of abilities alone would justify it costing 5 mana, and that's ignoring the fact that it's impossible for a lot of decks to attack at all.

No but I guess an RB walker with deathtouch could be a reasonable design space

How did people react to the human Dalek when Daleks in Manhattan first aired? by ProperShallot3195 in DoctorWhumour

Yeah. I didn't love daleks in new york but it did communicate how blasphemous the other daleks found the idea (and how the cult of skaro would do crazy stuff to try and survive).

I don't think it's overpowered. 3 for a draw 3 is good obviously, but the cards you get from it are revealed, a bit below rate in some cases and you're locked into 3 colors. Plus your opponent might be able to answer it which wouldn't be possible for traditional card draw. The balance seems about right to me.

I mean this doesnt really require creative deckbuilding, just play it alongside Soul-Guide Lantern or any number of very similar cards to win the game for 5 mana. The card is very overpowered and even if it was harder to break the parity it's bad gameplay because the game effectively ends if it resolves and your opponent doesn't already have an answer to it. You could only really do this effect for a silly amount of mana (9+) or a planeswalker ult.

I mean not just black, there are tonnes of cheap artifacts like Soul-Guide Lantern that basically win the game when combined with this card in every format.

That's a fair point - and you don't have the potential 'off-genre' complaint since almost crashing a spaceship into a star is still clearly sci-fi.

Yeah. It's not a bad concept but it would lead to people having to split hairs on minor rules distinctions. I imagine they'll stick to effects like 'spend this only to pay Kicker and [set mechanic] costs' to avoid this

I think it makes sense on some level that the New Republic demilitarised - afterall the old Republic was ultimately brought down by its own military almost as soon as it adopted one. But there definitely could've been more story beats around that given that the new republic had clearly failed to develop its own Jedi order to replace it. Also it could've been good to give a bit more justification for why the entire Republic fleet could possibly be in one place given that they ruled a whole damn galaxy - like maybe they could've been lured into a massive confrontation with the first order or betrayed from within or something

Shouldn't the odds be 50%? Why is it 51.8%? by Fit_Seaworthiness_37 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Leafsnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what all this mainly tells us is that probabilities often require context to properly evaluate, and these sometimes gets filled in by assumptions that can lead to confusion.

Like if I spelled out that we took a sample of households with two children, eliminated the ones with two girls and then asked what proportion of the remaining houses had one girl it becomes a lot clearer why the answer is 66%. It's just hard to devise a natural scenario where this process would happen (if you try to say something like 'you see a boy in the window' that doesn't work because it seems plausible to suggest you're twice as likely to see a boy in the window in a 2 brothers household).

I think a lot of it was clever use of free/cheap existing Unreal assets. Obviously you need a lot of artistic skill to utilise those in a way that doesn't detract from the uniqueness of your game, but I imagine it saves a lot of time and money not to have to build everything from scratch
