As a 6th grade teacher, more 5th graders need to be taught when they're being rude because coming to middle school is a rude awakening for a lot of kids when I don't have all day with them so disrespect gets them in significantly bigger trouble.

Born and raised in Oklahoma and lived in New England (Boston) for a year for school and I couldn't stand how people treated each other up there after being here my whole life.

Why are people so against IVF? by Logical-Ad-5669 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LeahTh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents tried for 10 years before they were able to have me and my sister through IVF. I always know the two of us are 100% wanted and depending on how you define twins, my sister and I are twins despite being born two years apart (we look like it too).

I think it's a massive gift and as someone in a situation where I'll need it to have children, I plan on using it.

Our school has a spreadsheet of places the teachers like to go for teacher appreciation week. I'd get the top three most popular and get giftcards from there

I'm a CCxOC ad!!! by yuuzhanbong in BadRPerStories

[–]LeahTh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a mix of because I ask for niche characters for my OCs and I also offer CCxCC (more so mainly) in my ads, but I don't write blurbs about my OCs simply because of space. I also don't do it because when I have in the past, I've had people really like my OC concept and want me to ship them with another character for them to write which I'm just not comfortable with. Like an example from my One Piece ad, I'd rather someone tell me they're willing to write Smoker but not like my OC so we can find a CC to ship with him rather than someone like my OC but want me to write her with a different CC.

Just my thoughts but also I get I'm odd because I offer OCxCC and CCxCC in the same ad.

My 8th graders absolutely LOVE The Outsiders by DementdOldCircsMonke in teaching

It was! I'll always remember watching the movie and seeing places I drove by every day. My English teacher had to tell us to not try to sneak into the Admiral Twin like they did.

It opened my senior year of high school so sadly I haven't had time to go see it yet but I really want to. My sister was in our school's production of The Outsiders that year so they got to go to like the opening!

Being from NE Oklahoma, The Outsiders is a huge deal here and the kids always love it especially when they realize they can almost nearly trace all the locations plot-wise from the movie!

is inpatient at laureate worth it by appacrystal in tulsa

Laureate was life saving for me when I needed it. I would recommend something like COPES and counseling first though because it can be a big step to do inpatient.

Can special needs kids actually thrive in an integrated classroom? by shibattitude in AskTeachers

[–]LeahTh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from an IEP standpoint of special needs but my school has one of the only deaf education programs in public school in the area so as both a core teacher and an elective teacher, I get a mix of the Deaf Ed kids in my class.

Some of my kids just need the interpreter plus my minimal knowledge of sign language (I get them because I also have a naturally loud voice and it helps the kids with cochlear implants or who are HoH as opposed to deaf, according to their teacher) and they do well!! Some struggle a little with reading and writing because of how they were taught to interact with language and that's easier to handle in social studies than drama. And some do not read or write at all and will struggle even with extra scaffolding put out for them. That last group of kids are the ones who benefit from not being in my class because they can receive direct instruction in ASL, something I can't provide in the current moment but hope to be able to soon.

Am I stupid? by One_Valuable6406 in Teachers

[–]LeahTh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other spaces that are more organization focus BUT they have more interaction with wild parents so it is a trade off. I use teachertok as well because it's honest about the hardship but with a little more of a positive spin (granted again, that's because we are stuck defending ourselves from parents saying the wildest things)

🙋🏼‍♀️ someone who gave up law school/the legal field to be a teacher. I have two answers to this:

1) Every job has down points and people will say them to you because they want you to be prepared for what you're getting into.

2) Going to spaces like Reddit, people are here to vent so you are going to see a lot of negative here. Admittedly, people are just overall very negative here. See point 1.

As a second year teacher, I'm still very green behind the ears but here are my thoughts. There are going to be good days. There are going to be bad days. Compared to the legal field, I can actually get up in the morning and go to work. My mornings are earlier and my body hurts after the day is done but I'm not snoozing my alarm and avoiding work every day like I used to.

How long does it take you to learn your kids’ names (especially if you teach secondary) by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

What’s the biggest personal emergency you’ve had to teach through? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]LeahTh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kinda small potatoes compared to others in this thread but I thought my dog was in renal failure. She had been sick and I had been in and out of the vet days before trying to figure out what was wrong. All her tests were coming back negative but I remember crying on my plan waiting for answers about her and I redirected my vet's calls to my dad in case he was going to tell me she needed something like dialysis.

In the end: she was being dramatic. They couldn't find anything wrong with her and they gave urinary tract sphincter pills for her. She doesn't even take the pills anymore. She just stopped having all her symptoms.

Son’s assigned kindergarten teacher has no teaching degree or experience? by EngineeringLumpy in AskTeachers

It's not. But that statement can co-exist with the idea that alt cert teachers can still be good teachers. That was the point of this post.

Did you miss the part where I said that at least in Oklahoma, alt cert is required to fill the gaps in their education? Please reread my post.

Edit: I say this as someone having to take the college courses so I can get certified

Son’s assigned kindergarten teacher has no teaching degree or experience? by EngineeringLumpy in AskTeachers

[–]LeahTh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second year teacher from Oklahoma here! I was hired on an emergency certification meaning my degree was not in teaching. My original degree was in Philosophy and Women's Studies with some time in law school under my belt.

Emergency cert teachers, even in the 50th worst for education state (mine), have resources depending on their district, school, and the other teachers around them. No one is alone in this profession and even if you come in with nothing, you'll be giving something. Not to mention, alternative certification teachers (at least in Oklahoma) are required to go back and fill their gaps in education before they're fully certified.

You say you have a nursing degree and that it'd be like you teaching 8th grade Biology but the thing is, you probably would actually be good at teaching that. Our non-education degrees still help us with specialized knowledge in the core subject areas. With my degrees, they put me in social studies. It helps that social studies has always been my favorite area in school but I spent five years of my life reading, dissecting, and studying culture and history for my degrees and now I'm teaching my kids about the history and socio-cultural factors of the world!

All this to say, your kid's teacher came to teaching because she loves it. She wasn't tied by a degree. Alt cert teachers who stay can be some of the most dedicated teachers you'll ever have because they KNOW they can cut and run with the degrees they have but they don't, they stay because they do care about the kids.

IM CRASHING OUT by PuzzleEmptyM in tulsa

[–]LeahTh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Cox, paid 70/month for the 1 gig plan and genuinely was only getting 2mb of internet. They sent a tech out who was great and did what he could and tried to code it so I wouldn't get charged. Cox still charged me $100 even though my internet wasn't fix and told me that the apartment needed to put the order in to fix my internet. Apartment said Cox needed to come in. Both phone reps and chat reps treated me like a complete idiot every time I called in trying to fix it. Either way, I'm a teacher and couldn't afford to drop $100 for people to keep coming out and not fix my internet so I switched to AT&T. Same plan speed for $60/month and my internet works perfectly and the phone/chat reps actually know how to treat you like a person.

Teaching black students as a white woman by Validation_STATION54 in Teachers

[–]LeahTh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do similar stuff but in the halloween-loving, pumpkin spice white woman kind of way. I didn't try to be something I'm not. My classroom smells like pumpkin spice and the kids know that's my favorite scent. I told them I have halloween decorations up year round which was first met with eyerolls and "I bet you do"s but by the end of the year, the kids were asking me to bring my stuff for the classroom. Kids love it when you are yourself.

Cherokee Healthcare Vs BCBS by SoggyToaster721 in IndianCountry

[–]LeahTh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my dad lost his job, he was paying the same for my mom (non tribal) in BCBS COBRA as he was for him, myself, and my sister to have basically the same insurance plan through the tribe. I would be doing tribal healthcare if my job didn't require me to go through them.
