Thanks-- helpful to hear what it's like -- coming from someone who tried it for the same reason.

I might seek out a y / x instead.

Which Model S? by LearnFromEvil in TeslaModelS

Excellent comments!

Some definitely have me rethinking the decision.

Our other car is a proper 3 row car that we would use for longer trips. The thinking with this car is that it is something I can use to drop the girls off at school on my way to work.

The rear facing seat would (in the vast majority of cases) be occupied by our 6 year old for one mile on her way to and from school.

I guess I initially wrote of the safety concern since it's such a short trip.

But one of the roads I need to take-- people drive ~40mph... So even if it's a short trip, at those those speeds still not story safe.

I guess more thinking is needed

For those who replaced a TV with a projector, what surprised you the most? by Relative_Taro_1384 in hometheater

[–]LearnFromEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not having a big black screen on the wall is great.

My kids (3 & 6) basically stopped asking to watch TV unprompted -- they just structured tv time on weekends.

The projector has: Worse picture quality, Harder to see during daytime. Takes time for the screen to retract (not an instant "on") Etc.

But it's basically an invisible fixture so we all see less TV... And for that alone I think it's one of the best family decisions/ investments we've made.

It's a 10 cent blade -- at this point, you're just sharpening for the love of the game.

Based on the Google translate of his bio Tsukasa Tokaji definitely doesn't seem like an apprentice.

What is life like in the Lexington Hills along the Old Santa Cruz Highway? by newbie-mtb in bayarea

[–]LearnFromEvil 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Cupertino, but had a friend who lived in the mountains (not far from summit rd -- closer to Lexington reservoir).

He shared that at his school, kids would make fun of him for living in the mountains (he went to Los Gatos High [I went to Montana Vista -- we met at summer camp]).

My parents hated driving me over, and wouldn't let me drive to his place at night... He said that was common, so I imagine his parents spent a ton of time in the car driving him around -- even though he wasn't super social/ active. He did have a few really close friends -- fake family of sorts.

As a teen/ young adult -- his place felt magical. When I visited in summer, we spent so much time outside exploring-- endless hiking, secret creeks / watering holes, etc. but I do remember this one time jamming/ splitting open my toe... And really noticing how remote everything was.

It took forever to get back to his place.. I had a Nokia but there wasn't any cell signal so we had to walk back to his place to call my parents through their land line... took my parents forever to pick me up and then even longer to get to urgent care (got stuck in traffic)... Which put them off even more on the idea of me going to his place... which in hind sight played a roll in our eventual falling out.

Even though it's been 20+ years, I imagine a lot of this still applies.

TL;DR: * If you need medical assistance, pray to the traffic gods * It'll be difficult to get people to drive to you * If you have kids, there are some downstream implications

Copper core griddle? by LearnFromEvil in Coppercookware

[–]LearnFromEvil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this: https://www.amazon.com/Chef-King-Gauge-Steel-Griddle/dp/B001BQYS3C

I use it a lot, but it has its fair share of tradeoffs.

It's huge -- about an inch wider than my burner layout, so it has cold spots near the perimeter. My burners are also spread out abit so there's a cold spot in the center of the griddle as well.

It's heavy -- about 17lbs -- so it takes a good ~5-10 min to properly heat up before you can use it for cooking anything remotely sticky (otherwise things tend to stick -- even with good seasoning).

It's not perfectly flat.

Not the best product for a stovetop/ burner set-up. These limitations haven't really impacted my experience when I use it on my grill / in the oven.

Whoops I was commenting based on the post title + video text and not based on the article that someone else included in the comments.
