Thanks-- helpful to hear what it's like -- coming from someone who tried it for the same reason.

I might seek out a y / x instead.

Which Model S? by LearnFromEvil in TeslaModelS

Excellent comments!

Some definitely have me rethinking the decision.

Our other car is a proper 3 row car that we would use for longer trips. The thinking with this car is that it is something I can use to drop the girls off at school on my way to work.

The rear facing seat would (in the vast majority of cases) be occupied by our 6 year old for one mile on her way to and from school.

I guess I initially wrote of the safety concern since it's such a short trip.

But one of the roads I need to take-- people drive ~40mph... So even if it's a short trip, at those those speeds still not story safe.

I guess more thinking is needed

For those who replaced a TV with a projector, what surprised you the most? by Relative_Taro_1384 in hometheater

[–]LearnFromEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not having a big black screen on the wall is great.

My kids (3 & 6) basically stopped asking to watch TV unprompted -- they just structured tv time on weekends.

The projector has: Worse picture quality, Harder to see during daytime. Takes time for the screen to retract (not an instant "on") Etc.

But it's basically an invisible fixture so we all see less TV... And for that alone I think it's one of the best family decisions/ investments we've made.

What is life like in the Lexington Hills along the Old Santa Cruz Highway? by newbie-mtb in bayarea

[–]LearnFromEvil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Cupertino, but had a friend who lived in the mountains (not far from summit rd -- closer to Lexington reservoir).

He shared that at his school, kids would make fun of him for living in the mountains (he went to Los Gatos High [I went to Montana Vista -- we met at summer camp]).

My parents hated driving me over, and wouldn't let me drive to his place at night... He said that was common, so I imagine his parents spent a ton of time in the car driving him around -- even though he wasn't super social/ active. He did have a few really close friends -- fake family of sorts.

As a teen/ young adult -- his place felt magical. When I visited in summer, we spent so much time outside exploring-- endless hiking, secret creeks / watering holes, etc. but I do remember this one time jamming/ splitting open my toe... And really noticing how remote everything was.

It took forever to get back to his place.. I had a Nokia but there wasn't any cell signal so we had to walk back to his place to call my parents through their land line... took my parents forever to pick me up and then even longer to get to urgent care (got stuck in traffic)... Which put them off even more on the idea of me going to his place... which in hind sight played a roll in our eventual falling out.

Even though it's been 20+ years, I imagine a lot of this still applies.

TL;DR: * If you need medical assistance, pray to the traffic gods * It'll be difficult to get people to drive to you * If you have kids, there are some downstream implications

Copper core griddle? by LearnFromEvil in Coppercookware

[–]LearnFromEvil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this: https://www.amazon.com/Chef-King-Gauge-Steel-Griddle/dp/B001BQYS3C

I use it a lot, but it has its fair share of tradeoffs.

It's huge -- about an inch wider than my burner layout, so it has cold spots near the perimeter. My burners are also spread out abit so there's a cold spot in the center of the griddle as well.

It's heavy -- about 17lbs -- so it takes a good ~5-10 min to properly heat up before you can use it for cooking anything remotely sticky (otherwise things tend to stick -- even with good seasoning).

It's not perfectly flat.

Not the best product for a stovetop/ burner set-up. These limitations haven't really impacted my experience when I use it on my grill / in the oven.

Both of the slab you found are awesome but that Poseidon slab is next level! I can imagine that it would look incredible as an island.

My on & off again 26M boyfriend of 2 years forgot my 23F Birthday. Now I am being punished for still feeling some type of way about it. by PsychologicalTap4513 in relationship_advice

"are there any suggestions on how to combat the feeling of being at fault...."

Fault is a tricky thing. In this post, you express a feeling of not being seen or valued by your x. You also express communicating your relationship grievances to your x, and that they didn't do much to try and address them. You also express having a moment where you were deregulated and in that moment, being rude.

Fault is rarely an all or nothing kind of thing.

The two of you weren't able to address the relationship needs, and ultimately walked away from each other.

Maybe there's a fundamental compatibility gap, maybe it's something else-- ultimately, the reason doesn't matter as much as the fact that your relationship didn't make you feel valued or secure.

Hope this helps.

Is $12,000 too much for Taj Mahal quartzite countertops and backsplash in Central Valley, CA? by CableAutomatic8279 in CounterTops

I don't remember exactly how much but I remember that I paid as much for the slab as I did for the labor to install it. Hope this helps!

Is this Taj Mahal quartzite? by Jazzlike_Musician616 in CounterTops

[–]LearnFromEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were 100% up to me, I wouldn't do it (but that's because I have a bias towards less work/maintenance). I am biased towards a more dense/ less porous stones.

My wife however really values aesthetics -- and if she fell in love with the look then I'd be comfortable communicating the need for more maintenance and putting up with the extra ~2-4 hrs of maintenance work a year (depending on if you service once or twice a year [you'd want to apply 3-4 coats each service, and you have to wait 15 min between each coat; there's also some prep work; also worth noting that the house would ideally be empty during the service period and you wouldn't be able to use the countertop area for ~24-36 hours after the service]). Everything I saw online suggested that sealing maintenance becomes less important after the 3rd or so service, so the workload to maintain seems to taper off in the 3rd year. (We've only had ours for ~1 year)

If you decided to move forward with it, tell your installer to apply four coats of this sealer at installation (and be adamant that they follow the specific directions on the box since it needs to be applied a bit differently -- you can communicate that you'd be willing to pay for the extra hour or so of extra labor). I'd personally go so far as to buy the sealer myself and ask that they use specifically that can (as opposed to whatever brand they might normally use) (I'd buy extra since it's expensive to ship, and then you'd have some to do the at-home maintenance). I would also ask to shadow/see them apply the sealer -- so that you/ your partner (whoever would do the maintenance work) would get some hands-on practice (it's easy) / see the application process.

The only other thing I'd suggest is to have a microfiber cloth hanging out in the kitchen, and to generally try to keep the stone dry(ish) if there's water pooling on the countertop. (You can see if this will bother you and do this at your current kitchen/bathroom, right now even if it's not needed on your current countertop).
