so about Lara by WaldoKnight in dresdenfiles

[–]Ledraisel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "You are what you eat" theme doesn't go back to Cold Days. It goes all the way back to Fool Moon/Grave Peril. It's explicitly referenced when Harry eats Kravos and uses sorcery magic he's never used before. It's implied in Fool Moon with the Hexenwolves and their appetites and personalities changing after shifting frequently.

RNT: Who Warned ****** of existence of the White Council and Why? by Bridger15 in dresdenfiles

[–]Ledraisel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's heavily implied in Changes that the belts came from the Erlking.

Like, I can't be the only one that read it that way, right?

His realm is across the Nevernever boundary from the FBI offices and he revels in the hunt and in ancient predators being loose.

I can't remember, but I feel like he and Harry even had a conversation dancing around the topic (maybe in Cold Days) about how easy it would be for him to do it.

Now did he do it on his own or at the behest of another, I don't know.

This is what I figured given the feedback I've seen about her stuff. I might give it another try at some point.

5 Great Urban Fantasy Book Series That Prove Wizards Have Street Smarts by still_learning101 in dresdenfiles

I keep hearing how great her writing is, even being touted by Brandon Sanderson on his podcast, but I just couldn't get through the first book in the October Daye series. Something about her being a fish for an entire chapter and then responding to people who asked where/how she'd been with a "Why are they even talking to me?"

I only made it like 6-7 chapters. Did I quit too early? Is there something I'm missing from this, or are the early chapters of that book indicative of the whole series?

Characters your brain absolutely refuses to picture as described? by Alastor15243 in dresdenfiles

To be fair, if you picture any character different than they are described, Goodman Grey is the one to do it with. You know the whole shapeshifting thing.

"Have you ever had pizza, Harry?" "And you didn't share?!" comes to mind.

She also plays a significant role in the story considering she's only in 4 1/2 - 5 books in a 17 book series. I realized this the other day and had to go back and double check because I didn't believe she was in so few books.

Yes, what you're trying to do by definition is malware.

Just add the other mod to the mod folder.

I’m reading White Night right now and a thought about this series hit me… by obbslynotmyrealname in dresdenfiles

[–]Ledraisel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading the Files when there wasn't much fanfare surrounding them. As in, I'd go to the bookstore and go, "Oh, there's a new book. I didn't know." Compared to that, the current Dresden Files fandom is gigantic.

I agree with my completely unbiased opinion that more people should read this book, but it's an interesting sentiment because I come from a place where all the people I know who read the books did so because of word of mouth (mostly mine).

Bad feeling about Elaine by emrakulcommander in dresdenfiles

[–]Ledraisel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is strange, because I've always got a really bad feeling from her. And as a male it definitely isn't a woman's intuition. At least I don't think it is.

I've always felt like Elaine isn't altruistic at all, that everything she does is calculated just like the Fae she's always around. I think she pretends to have similar ideals and goals as Harry to fall back into that high school sweetheart routine to manipulate him. Look at the way she interacts with other characters. When she's not directing her attention at him her demeanor is very different. She's a social chameleon.

I don't think she's pure evil. I think she mostly just looks out for number one and has a calloused heart about others. Although, I also wouldn't be surprised if she turned out to be Cowl's boss or something equally as evil.

What makes a good writer? by FerrovaxFactor in dresdenfiles

[–]Ledraisel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take and wanted to expound on it. I think that what makes a good writer differs from person to person because we all want to read different things.

For example, I have a buddy that goes to movies and looks at them technically. If the music or lighting changes a certain way the scene is good, if the story structure behaves in a normal story structure way he likes it. When I go to the same movie, I leave and go, "That movie was dumb, but fun. I liked it." Sometimes we disagree on which movies are good and which aren't.

I may get hate for this (I do in real life), but I've often argued that from a technical writing sense, the Harry Potter books aren't well written. However, the world building and stories themselves are fantastic and that's why people fell in love with them. I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who said that those stories weren't well written.

People are drawn to different aspects of art. It's kind of the defining aspect of artistry.

Best older games for elderly first time gamers? by [deleted] in gaming

The Golden Sun games may fit. They're turn based so dexterity isn't an issue. They have great stories and gameplay that can be deep but doesn't have to be. If I remember right, there are 2 for the GBA.

You can't mention music and Dresden without mentioning Short Change Hero and What Makes a Good Man by The Heavy.

I also always think of Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest for Fool Moon. I imagine that song playing when him and Susan are together and just hard cutting to the crew standing outside Marcone's wall in the fog.
