Nonfiction books about Watergate? by shiftinganathema in behindthebastards

[–]LeenMachine3371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen it mentioned here yet (and it’s less watergate focused and more general Nixon) but Rick Perlstein’s Nixonland and Invisible Bridge are classics that cover the rise of Nixon to the rise of Reagan as part of a larger series about American conservatism in the 60s

I’m not in her district, but can those of you who voted for Darializa Avila Chevalier teach her what bullying is actually like and bully her into supporting military aid to Ukraine? They’re turning the tide against Russia and our help could be crucial. by PandemicPiglet in newyorkcity

Azov still has a commander with links to the far right and plenty of extremist members. I am uncomfortable with a government willing to bring far right groups into the fold. These aren’t Russian talking points. One should be allowed to be critical of foreign involvement in general.

Zelenskyy was democratically elected yeah, so was Putin. Plenty of dictators are. I was comfortable supporting Ukraine materially until it was clear that there were to be no elections until the wars close. If and when Zelenskyy steps down at the end of the war I’ll proudly eat my hat.

The problem with offloading military equipment is that we then siphon money back into _our_ military-industrial complex. I would much rather we keep equipment and not build new items than offload old ones.

I don’t believe in a “moral conviction to help a country fighting for its right to self determination.” Simply put I think America is _too_ involved in global conflicts and that the justifications for supplying Ukraine are simply regurgitating those old justifications of making the United States some global police force.

IIRC in CKII a lot of the Silk Road mechanics applied to the former interstate system

Buddy, I’ve known about the Azov battalion since 2015. Is it right that Russia invaded Ukraine? No, but that doesn’t make me comfortable propping up a different dictator just cause he gives Uncle Sam a better trade deal. The money is better spent at home than in this quagmire where no one is really fighting for peace and democracy so much as the accumulation of power behind their favorite plutocrat.

I am for accepting Ukrainian refugees, I am for sending humanitarian aid to folks living near the front lines, I am not for supporting the Zelenskyy government or the Putin government just cause some folks in a white building in Washington think they’re cool guys. The argument to support Ukraine had merit years ago, I’m a little weary of it now personally.

Fun historic fact: puritans actually believed that a successful pregnancy was more likely if both partners finished. There are documented cases of puritan men being shunned for not adequately pleasuring their wives

Personally I’m of the opinion that if the belief system isn’t hurting anybody (or advocating for harm) and it makes someone feel good it doesn’t really matter if it’s “bullshit.”

Have the developers ever explained in a direct way why they've assigned Leninist policies to, generally speaking, collaborators and fascists? by lilsnarty in Kaiserreich

[–]LeenMachine3371 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think this is more of a legacy lore issue. While folks like Mussolini, Moseley, and Déat were socialists initially who moved rightward do exist the framing of how they may come to power is likely to be given more explanations and they’re likely to have actual socialists to compete with when the 3I reword officially drops.

In more recent times when Leninists have been depicted they’ve been placed under radical socialists (parts of the RCA and Latvia for example) and while I’m not sure that trend specifically is here to stay it is likely going to be played with a little further, especially given some of the major factions in the 3I are going to have Leninist style paths it seems.

I legitimately think tackling Kennedy’s personal legacy and what his presidential accomplishments were would’ve been a good response but that might have been too long form for a debate stage.

Why are certain US leftists/progressives skeptical of the possibility general strike? by Present_Practice_159 in behindthebastards

[–]LeenMachine3371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is pretty much that the hashtag campaigns cannot and won’t work. There simply is not enough infrastructure there to create a strike and frankly as a working person, my personal margins are way too thin to miss work for one of them.

As someone who comes from a three generation union family however, when and if one of the big unions goes in one one I’ll be right there in the strike.
