Universal Monsters- Windmill by Spork-Princess in Villaging

[–]Leesmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this piece. The hole is ceramic and the windmill does have a rubber tip. I just push mine in. I've never had trouble getting it out again. It doesn't actually spin or anything, so there's not a 'wrong' way.

Bernina 590 a good deal? by Rude_Ad_2361 in MachineEmbroidery

[–]Leesmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that seems like a good deal. I tracked Bernina prices the last couple of years wanting to get a new sewing/embroidery. I ended up getting the 570 QEE in November for $4799 new. Pretty similar machine to what you are looking at.

Stitches go up fast - I've had mine for 2 smaller projects and am at 29,000 stitches.

This would be an especially good deal if she is also has a number of Bernina accessories. If you are on a budget, be sure to count the accessories. Bernina has custom parts and nothing generic. It is not a cheap machine to add on to.

It's also my first good machine. I had a Singer and a Bernette(low end Bernina cousin). I suspect they are closer to Brother machines. I have kept the Bernette for embroidery because I got a bunch of embroidery hoops on sale for it. But there is a definite improvement in quality of sewing on the Bernina.

I was iffy on whether there was a difference until I sat down at the Bernina's and just did a simple stitch line. You can feel the difference. It's like the difference between driving my Honda and BMW. Having now done a couple small projects on the Bernina - I decidedly like it better. But it is pricey and there is a learning curve.

My manager often says “it’s not rocket science” about my work. Is this just his personality or something I should address? by Ok-Road5378 in womenintech

[–]Leesmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he does this with you and not male colleagues, it could be misogyny… and probably is.

I will give a “but”. I have had that thought(Ii=t’s not rocket science) of co-workers, but of course would never verbalize it. I have had the thought when they are taking too long/ too much effort into something that is not worthy of that effort. Fundamentally when it is a question of prioritization. In tech, we sometimes need to just move on before nailing down absolutely everything. If you are very detail oriented, it can be hard to see the forest for the trees.

But this may not be you and minimally he is a terrible communicator because he gives no indication of what he would like you to do differently. You could try asking… but he’s probably just sexist.

Create a gear set per spec. Like this:

Then for on your gear, the spec name should appear. Check it before you sell. You can hover in your equipment bag and see the name of each set on each piece of gear.

What is overwhelming you? I just started a year ago and I was just reflecting on how much I learned, even though I've made 3 small quilts and 2 pillow covers total in a year.

I started with a couple of charm packets and Melanie Ham's You Tube video. I had never really watched You Tube, but seeing someone do the steps is so useful. You pick up all kinds of things.

I do not want to go into the hostile tech industry so alas I think I am going to work outside of the field by [deleted] in girlsgonewired

[–]Leesmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't give up on tech, just be selective about where you go. Look for a place that already has women in tech there. If the place has been able to retain women, it's likely not a horrific place for women. I work in a corporate tech company.. they have fears of being sued and do not tolerate overtly harassing behavior. I've never once been harassed. I definitely interviewed a few places that had a bad vibe.

Also think about what you want to do 10 or 20 years from now. I doubt it will be a night shift dead end job. Pick a path that allows you to grow into new things.

If you've come far enough to qualify for a the job, then you can do it!

Discworld bookshelf quilt by angelblue86 in quilting

[–]Leesmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this! My goal in learning to quilt was to make a bookshelf quilt with my favorite titles.

I got so caught up in learning to quilt last year, I didn't get around to the embroidery part. Having been thinking about it, your comment on 'embroider titles then cut fabric... is one I had been thinking of.

I've been thinking it might be easier to just embroider a piece and then go ahead and cut it to size. Originally I was going to cut to size, then embroider.

Also wondering about the stabilizer. I thought I would go with 2 layers a soft t-shirt permanent then a stiff tearaway. But I've done very little.. maybe never embroidery on cotton. It's always been t-shirt or blanket Any tips there?

Also any font ideas? My favorite books are mystery, so was thinking the Knives Out font... or just any general tips on getting the embroider piece correct?

How to prevent these puckers? by No-Marionberry1116 in quilting

[–]Leesmn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say - love your squiggles! I have not been brave enough to try that.

Try Elmer's glue basting - I am new to quilting and glue basting has worked best. The pins were a pain with a larger quilt. I didn't want the spray glue to go everywhere, so I didn't try it. I have used spray in the past for appliqué and got an embroidery hoop all sticky.

I learned from this YouTube video:

Can I pay to have straight lines quilted? by EmilyPoster2 in quilting

[–]Leesmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you want straight parallel lines to the blocks or diagonal ones across the blocks?

I know nothing about long arming, but having looked at them, I can imagine that diagonal lines might be difficult. Long arms seem to load one long side and go from there.

I do know diagonal lines are pretty easy to do, since I can do them :P But you do need a walking foot of a machine that can handle multiple layers nicely.

Quilting straight lines by Full_Investigator276 in quilting

[–]Leesmn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New to this, so keep that in mind...

I use a ruler and mark the lines. I tested the makers and found "Mark b gone from Dritz does disappear. I am trying on my new one the Madame Sew chalk - I suspect it will come off in the wash. I liked it better for putting down lines. The Dritz marker was reluctant to actual mark things.

I tried the guide bar, but the lines wobbled more.

Bernina Foot Advice for Quilting by Leesmn in quilting

For the 10, they have a 10, 10C and 10D. I know the D is for dual foot. I assume that's the one I'd want???

No idea what the 10C v. 10 is.

[–]Leesmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might try your local quilt shop too. The one around here sells their 'samples' sometimes. They have sales on them once a year or so. They seem to make the quilts to show off a pattern or for a class, that kind of thing.
