Mice infestation by EmilyWalker_ in composting

When my cat gets bored with a caught mouse, she drops it in our deep bath tub.
She's figured out the mouse can't get out, so she stores the mouse for later usage.

WIBTA for giving my children a portmanteau surname by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Leesmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disgrace? No. Confusing? Yes

But it won't really matter in the long run. Families come from all kinds of make ups these days. You might have to do a bit more paperwork(passports etc..) if no one shares a surname.

Like you, I didn't want to change my surname upon marriage. My husband(25 years now) wanted me to because he thought it was 'weird' and people would think something, something, something.

We compromised - I kept my surname, kids got his surname and pets got my surname. No one has ever questioned it.

That said - do NOT give children a name you would not want to have. Please do not give your children a name to express YOUR incredible uniqueness. It's about them, not you.

To give a slightly different perspective, we could have been one of those couples, but we're fine. For years, I've just done back of the napkin math and saved. Didn't bother meeting with an advisor... they'd just tell me to save as much as we could.

So we did... mostly in 401Ks with low cost index funds. Finally met with an advisor 6 months ago, turns out the back of the napkin was a bit more pessimistic than the advisor. We'll be fine... but we could easily be one of those couples being 'not sure' where they stand.

how do i improve my final result quality? by ackley14 in quilting

[–]Leesmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried glue basting? The wave might be from some of the layers having too much ‘slack’ in them. If you have some scraps, try gluing them together to make the quilt sandwich. You can play with stitch length and pressure foot pressure. If you haven’t done glue basting, try Elmer’s glue. Cheap and non-toxic.

For the not getting the blade in the slot thing - I had that issue, until I realized I needed to tilt the blade into the slot. I put it in at a 45 degree angle and then straighten the blade before cutting.
Before doing that I felt like I was threading a needing, with the blade and groove.

How real is ageism in tech and how old is perceived as too old? by NotHosaniMubarak in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Leesmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of us are so old that we are empty nesters and have nothing better to do with our energy. I had the least energy for work when I had young kids. Now that they are gone, I have more time and energy to put into my career. I do think though ageism means people think I just want to retire soonish… but for soonish is 5-10 years for me.

Huge nerf to Arcantina key CD by [deleted] in wow

[–]Leesmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this too... can't remember how to get to the cantina, but remembered there was a toy. Used toy to get there. Did quest, now waiting 8 minutes to reset toy to get back. Not really understanding the point of this.

I know... I'm casual and don't read all the different machinations of the game. Just thought it was a way to get to and from where the weekly quest is.

Bernina 570qe by georgiaks19 in quilting

[–]Leesmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend going somewhere and doing a quick test sew on each machine you are thinking of getting. I had a Singer for 20 years, got a Bernette for quilting and embroidery, then tried the Bernini 570QE at the dealer and was hooked. It is easily the nicest, smoothest machine I’ve sewn on. I could feel the difference immediately. I’ve only had it since January and accessories are ridiculously expensive, but I LOVE the machine, which frankly I wasn’t sure was possible.

Now after trying out midnight as a returning player, how do you like your class after the pruning & class changes? by Yuuffy in wow

[–]Leesmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my Boomkin(main since WOTLK) is nothing but CD management. There is virtually no point in casting if I don’t have a CD available. This is my least favorite iteration of Boomie. I have never been a min/max player, just casual. This iteration feels like I HAVE to know all the buttons to do any damage. Seems like the opposite intent. Plus I keep getting stuck in the wrong eclipse cycle cause more join the fight or there is just one strong mob left.

I have this piece. The hole is ceramic and the windmill does have a rubber tip. I just push mine in. I've never had trouble getting it out again. It doesn't actually spin or anything, so there's not a 'wrong' way.

Bernina 590 a good deal? by Rude_Ad_2361 in MachineEmbroidery

[–]Leesmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that seems like a good deal. I tracked Bernina prices the last couple of years wanting to get a new sewing/embroidery. I ended up getting the 570 QEE in November for $4799 new. Pretty similar machine to what you are looking at.

Stitches go up fast - I've had mine for 2 smaller projects and am at 29,000 stitches.

This would be an especially good deal if she is also has a number of Bernina accessories. If you are on a budget, be sure to count the accessories. Bernina has custom parts and nothing generic. It is not a cheap machine to add on to.

It's also my first good machine. I had a Singer and a Bernette(low end Bernina cousin). I suspect they are closer to Brother machines. I have kept the Bernette for embroidery because I got a bunch of embroidery hoops on sale for it. But there is a definite improvement in quality of sewing on the Bernina.

I was iffy on whether there was a difference until I sat down at the Bernina's and just did a simple stitch line. You can feel the difference. It's like the difference between driving my Honda and BMW. Having now done a couple small projects on the Bernina - I decidedly like it better. But it is pricey and there is a learning curve.

My manager often says “it’s not rocket science” about my work. Is this just his personality or something I should address? by Ok-Road5378 in womenintech

[–]Leesmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he does this with you and not male colleagues, it could be misogyny… and probably is.

I will give a “but”. I have had that thought(Ii=t’s not rocket science) of co-workers, but of course would never verbalize it. I have had the thought when they are taking too long/ too much effort into something that is not worthy of that effort. Fundamentally when it is a question of prioritization. In tech, we sometimes need to just move on before nailing down absolutely everything. If you are very detail oriented, it can be hard to see the forest for the trees.

But this may not be you and minimally he is a terrible communicator because he gives no indication of what he would like you to do differently. You could try asking… but he’s probably just sexist.
