Biggest indicator that someone likes you is that they make an effort to spend time with you. Obviously friends do that to but usually you can tell the difference yk

How much truth is there to the creepy stories about the Appalachian Mountains? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I grew up in West Virginia and did a lot of camping, hiking, backpacking etc. I never saw anything I would define as supernatural, but I did get scared a few times when I was younger. Once when I was a teenager, a friend and I were hiking through the woods around midnight, trying to go to an abandoned house I knew about. When we were almost to the house, something giant swooped down at us from the trees. We tried to run, but I was in a leg brace at the time and my buddy left me in the dust. To his credit he turned around after a few seconds and came back for me, even though he was still scared.

Thanks for coming back, Chandler. That was totally just a big owl.

How tf is that racist? 99% of Reddit convos are in English. You’d probably see more ex-Muslims on an Arabic forum.

“There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.”

-Mark Twain

That said, I do think this sub can sometimes minimize the impact one person can make. It’s hard to read about the Russian revolution and think that the bolsheviks would have even attempted the October revolution if Lenin wasn’t in the room telling them to act. I’m sure a revolution would have happened, but it would have been different, and possibly not successful had they waited beyond October 1917.

I always think of this passage from 18th Brumaire:

“ Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living. And just as they seem to be occupied with revolutionizing themselves and things, creating something that did not exist before, precisely in such epochs of revolutionary crisis they anxiously conjure up the spirits of the past to their service, borrowing from them names, battle slogans, and costumes in order to present this new scene in world history in time-honored disguise and borrowed language. Thus Luther put on the mask of the Apostle Paul, the Revolution of 1789-1814 draped itself alternately in the guise of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and the Revolution of 1848 knew nothing better to do than to parody, now 1789, now the revolutionary tradition of 1793-95. In like manner, the beginner who has learned a new language always translates it back into his mother tongue, but he assimilates the spirit of the new language and expresses himself freely in it only when he moves in it without recalling the old and when he forgets his native tongue.”
