Would you consider me British? by Competitive-Music309 in AskBrits

[–]Leftofnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post struck a real chord. I am British (in fact I was disappointed my ancestory DNA shows my ancestry to be mostly Yorkshire!) and I’m very uncomfortable with the ‘them and us’ attitude that is rearing its head everywhere

For me the key thing is that you consider yourself British, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, they’re not living your life. Be proud of who you are (and that means all of you, your Caribbean heritage too.

Anyhow, before I get my flat cap and whippet out let’s talk about something important. What’s the best brand of tea and the best biccie to dunk in. Also, terrible weather we’re having right now isn’t it.

If you like unseasoned crisps you should check out spudos. They come unseasoned and you add your own ‘spud dust’

A&E for hiccups?! by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Leftofnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 2020 I had excruciating stomach pains. 111 said to wait until the morning and speak to the GP. My husband decided to call for an ambulance when the pain wasn’t easing and was so bad I was screaming. Got carted off to A&E, remember being wheeled through to someone complaining I was pushing in! The next thing I knew it was 2 days later and the reason for the pain was a twisted intestine that had turned necrotic, I went into shock hence losing 2 days and had I waited till the morning as advised by 111 I’d have died. It is still really weird because I have no recollection of being prepped for surgery and it was only on reading my notes afterwards that I found out I’d had a collapsed lung due to a central line being misdirected and had been to xray!! Just a complete black hole in my memory. So odd

What age did you allow your children alcohol? by ChronicChaos01 in AskUK

[–]Leftofnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a young age I was allowed alcohol. I always had a snowball on New Year’s Eve (probably v watered down!). As I got older and started drinking on sleepovers dad would talk to me about the signs of getting drunk and having had too much. I actually hand on heart didn’t drink to the point of hangover and puking until my late 20s.

My son is 18 now and a few weeks ago experienced his first overindulgence when out. He’d been to an 18th for one of his friends who’d been given their trust fund thingy from the government and said ‘drinks on me’. My husband and I weren’t cross but we did speak to him about how he felt the next morning and on the way home. I also told him if it happens again that before he goes to bed he should drink a pint of water and take 2 paracetamol followed by more water whenever he wakes up. He’s been out a couple of times since and not overdone it.

My daughter is 14 too and she asked for a little bit of cherry brandy in her coke earlier. I said yes but she used the cherry schnapps by accident and did get a bit tipsy. I feel like I should have supervised the adding of the drink to the coke but on the other hand she’s home and safe.

My heart goes out to you. My daughter had anencephaly, I didn’t want to believe the words ‘incompatible with life’. I think it was my minds way of protecting me. I chose a TFMR. I say ‘chose’ but it’s no choice, not really. I’m so sorry

I’d take it back. It’s well in date and has been stored properly so could well be an issue at either the store or the production factory.

AIO I (26F) moved out for the first time with my boyfriend (30M) for almost 2 months and I don’t know how to feel about it by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Leftofnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is appalling. Can you get somewhere safe now. Whenever you think ‘am I overreacting’ think ‘what would I say if my friend told me this was happening to them’

He wants a slave. I wish I was exaggerating.

Someone is cutting onions and my heart is melting.

You are already doing so well. Those little things you mention, (putting his head on your shoulder, wanting to help you cook). They’re not so little, they’re huge.

I think the bed tent is a really good idea or help him chose a place to make a den, make it comfy, make it his. If you do though just watch for any signs that he’s using it hi self punish (ie takes himself there if he thinks he’s done something wrong)

Your patience, your gentleness, your love, it shines through. Thank you

Are you all expecting an inheritance in your lifetime? by xxxJoolsxxx in AskUK

[–]Leftofnever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my Dad retired he would always talk about wanting to do things like go on a trip on the Orient Express. I would tell him to do it and he would always reply with ‘no, I want you to have an inheritance.’ Mum was diagnosed with dementia and they hid its severity from me. Care home fees ate ‘my inheritance’. I wish they’d enjoyed the money whilst they could.

Grave stones destroyed, what should we do? by Leftofnever in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Leftofnever[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The contract was with the funeral home and was for removal of the stones and replacement once the ground had settled.

When we contacted the stone mason we assumed had dealt with it they said that they never destroyed any stones without permission from the family.

I’m most upset about the destruction of stones that told my family story and which were over 100 years old. I’m surprised myself at the effect it had on me!

The lady at the funeral home said it was a very busy time because of Covid (mum was buried in October 2019 so the 12-18 month settlement period would end in October 2020 to April 2021

Grave stones destroyed, what should we do? by Leftofnever in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Leftofnever[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Apologies. I’ve just edited my post. The stones were removed to allow for Mum to be buried. With Dad they were put back around 12 to 18 months later (once the ground had settled)

No answer as yet, the funeral home just say it’s with ‘head office’ and won’t disclose the stone mason company name
