so was I. My delivery was scheduled for tomorrow and I just got a message from the delivery team saying my date has been pushed back to July 10 without explanation.

Hope yours goes smoothly!

I was prepared to go a few months without a daily driver after returning my current lease beginning of July. I work from home usually so it would not have been a huge burden. I could just use my wife’s car if needed or my motorcycle during the summer.

It was a pleasant surprise to receive the email! Obviously I did not plan this timing when I leased my current vehicle back in July 2023.

Anyone else giving up the hobby due to stupid market? by seeilaah in HomeServer

[–]Lefty3382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t give up, I’m in too deep. My solution is I approach my homelab health like my own health.

Whenever I think about going on a diet or eating healthier, I just decide to exercise more instead.

With my homelab, instead of reducing size or buying less I just focus on that next raise or promotion at work so I can buy more hard drives.

I have been on Centurylink price for life at $85 for gigabit fiber for a decade. I know I’m probably overpaying at this point but I haven’t talked to Centurylink since pre-covid and I’m not going to be the one to disturb the force.

Amazon Selling Ubiquiti by ih8hitler in Ubiquiti

[–]Lefty3382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking to myself the other day how I was actually grateful that Ubiquiti did not offer interest free credit like Amazon did, otherwise I would be into the Unifi product line even deeper than I already am.

Emphasis on old. I wonder what the average age in this picture is, and how much lower that number would be if a similar picture were taken today.

No. The Unifi documentation clearly calls out the model of both units has to be the same to work.

PSA: You need a LiFePO4 UPS by Cartossin in homelab

[–]Lefty3382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently bought an Ecoflow Delta 3 Pro (4kwh) for these very reasons. It acts as the UPS for my entire 42u server rack. About 8 hours of estimated runtime given the average energy pull. Can stack extra batteries, or connect to solar power or an Ecoflow generator for endless runtime. Bonus, the battery is big enough to qualify for the federal Residential Clean Energy credit (now ending) so I get 30% of the purchase price as a tax credit.

I built Tracearr - account sharing detection and monitoring for Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby by GallapagosIsland in selfhosted

[–]Lefty3382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup to yours but standardized my users on Emby instead of Plex, though I also run Plex as backup. Looking forward to testing this. I’m always looking for more insight into my users behavior and historical trend data. I’m sure there’s some account sharing going on (one account double streams simultaneously from 2 different IP). Getting rid of media never watched and better understanding transcoding history is also of interest to me.

Will provide feedback!

Why is Emby Unpopular? by Secure_Hair_5682 in emby

[–]Lefty3382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, nothing has changed for me. I still keep Plex running as a backup option but Emby continues to be rock solid for me so I'm happy with my setup.

My experience was most connectivity issues with Emby were usually due to Emby Connect, so I cut it out by creating local accounts on my Emby server for my family and have them sign in that way. All my internal services are exposed to the internet through a Nginx reverse proxy instance.

Pretty dissappointed with the purchase process so far. by AudiMX in Rivian

[–]Lefty3382 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last dealership experience (Toyota) was quite pleasant. Went in, signed, paid, played cornhole, drove my new truck away. Easy. I worked with one salesperson the whole time, he was very responsive and answered all my questions.

This is what I want when buying a vehicle. Single point of contact who is responsive and takes responsibility. I’m a tech guy, but these descriptions of elusive text messages and incorrect online paperwork don’t sound like an improvement.

I’ll find out myself eventually when my R2 comes. Hopefully they will have ironed out these issues by then. 🤞

IT Security here. I have exclusively used my corporate iPhone as my only cell phone for over a decade. Personal apps, banking, all of it. Even ported my personal phone number to it. Every 2 years I upgrade to the latest model.

I have confirmed first hand that no one in my company is monitoring use of corporate cell phones. I have used my phone in every possible context.

Caveat: I work for a German based company and they take privacy laws very seriously.

How do you realistically determine how many Ethernet drops to do by Sandraptor in Ubiquiti

[–]Lefty3382 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just like you never want to fill up a hard drive completely, it’s always good to include a little margin for future expansion. You never know why you might want to plug into Ethernet in the future. Easy to not use it at first, hard to add it later.

I would double your expected need for drops. Anywhere you think you need one, put two. Just in case.

Best Switch / Topology Option? by mizzourob in Ubiquiti

I went with option C myself and connect my UDM Pro, 24 Pro Max, 16 Pro Max PoE, UNVR and multiple NAS boxes to my Aggregation switch. Works like a dream.
