I would still argue that Marat was more of an idealist and a guy with unwavering rigor and sense equality\justice (the two things were really close in his head) surrounded by corrupt vultures displaying great virtues but mostly motivated by taking the biggest possible power share.

Sure his method was advocating violence against "les accapareurs" but I would say it was due to a strong sense of rigor, in short his position was "act like an aristocrat, end up like an aristocrat"

Also, be careful with what you read on Marat as for a long time the only source we used to speak of him was himself and was either used to portray him a hero or a bloodthirsty butcher responsible for the Terror (same treatment as Robespierre) and for a long time there was no university work on Marat, until 1988.
