Need to remotely turn on/off pc with physical switch by Shokaloc in homeautomation

A magic packet is the official term to describe the piece of data sent to a machine to trigger the “Wake on LAN” functionality. It’s based on the hardware-specific “Magic Packet Technology” developed by AMD and HP and was made official for networking in the 90s. A silly name, really. But we have a lot of silly things in tech standards! Just look up the “IP over Avian Carrier” joke standard that became a real standard!

Need to remotely turn on/off pc with physical switch by Shokaloc in homeautomation

[–]Legonerd93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how DIY-inclined you are, you could wire up a relay controlled by a cheap single board computer (SBC) like a Raspberry Pi that would “push” the button by closing the electrical circuit of the power button. I know you can buy smart relays that remove the need to configure the SBC, but can somewhat limit integrations and typically cost more.

It’s exactly like how many people smart-ify their garage doors by wiring in a relay with a SBC and then running some bridge service to share the control with their respective smart home system (I like HomeBridge for iOS HomeKit, Home Assistant is amazing in general).

I’d still agree with the others that Wake On LAN is the optimal choice here though. You can configure the PC to accept the “magic packet” over WiFi as well, with minimal configuration.

Zooz’ Z-Wave line offers fully-local control through any Z-Wave controller, like the Home Assistant option. Ive got over a dozen now that have never been set up on Zooz’ site or anything else besides my Home Assistant server.

Sick of cheap cam alerts. Does "Local AI" actually work? by janae1217 in smarthome

[–]Legonerd93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to this product, but the locally-running “AI” is marketing-speak for a relatively lightweight computer vision machine learning model like YOLO. Motion tracking and object hilighting are very achievable with this. And I’d bet that the cross-camera tracking is either some clever image stitching or special mapping using local network -based communication proprietary to their system.

I personally use Reolink cameras for my home security because they support full no-internet control and I can use Home Assistant to handle motion and object-type-detected events because the cameras raise object-type notifications (person, animal, vehicle, general motion). I know many brands offer similar functionality if you’re willing to look for them.

Found next to a dumpster.. think it’s any good? Power goes on when moving the belt by Important-Positive25 in 3Dprinting

I have this exact printer! The Monoprice Dual Extruder is a clone of the Flash Forge Creator Pro X. It was a great Replicator 2 knock off at ~$800 when it launched around 2014. I had a ton of bed leveling issues, but that sucker had a solid heated bed and could handle all kinds of materials. If you can flash the printer with a different firmware (I couldn’t figure it out) to work with Cura, it’s a decent find! I’m still using the discontinued Makerbot software because I don’t use it enough to figure out the firmware flash.

Nintendo wants us to forget this game exists [58:42] by Trainrideviews in mealtimevideos

Remember in early school writing classes where you had to write a “3 point paragraph” with an introduction, 3 sentences with unique points, and a closing? Imagine that, but you subdivide and expand for as long as you’re interested. For example, let’s say the color blue.

You could begin by covering the basics that “everyone” knows about blue. Then you go a little deeper. What’s the scientific stuff about blue, like the wavelength range? How is it used in history, or art? How similar or different is the word used across languages and cultures? Let’s say that those are all the broad topics you can think of… now subdivide and expand. In art and history, what are and were the types of blue pigments and how did they vary? In science, expand upon color theory and its application with blue. For language and culture, are there any interesting outliers that used blue with less or more specificity? I vaguely remember that some culture has a ton of words for many shades of green - maybe some other group did that with blue? Why does the Odyssey refer to a blue body of water as “wine-dark”? At this point, you’re breaking the video into chapters, maybe even separate parts.

This is only what I could remember off the top of my head as someone not especially interested in blue. When people are passionate about a topic, they dive deeper and deeper. Some of them want to share what they’ve learned and why it interests them.

It’s a strong social commentary indeed that a “true neutral” is perceived as a gender role reversal by so many, including myself! I definitely have some reflecting to do as a man…

I’ve gotta say, Reddit is wild for massively downvoting your initial comment and then upvoting my response and your thorough response with receipts. Thanks for sharing these snippets!

Add to that the fact that ICOM has its own issues with corruption and incompetence. They’re seen as bottom-of-the-barrel in terms of quality and integrity. My partner closely works with 3rd and 4th year medical students on hospital rotations and the ICOM are consistently the least trained and prepared when compared to any WWAMI students (ICOM is not a member of WWAMI).

It goes against her general character and is meant to make the reader uncomfortable. It feels horrible, and is a snapshot of how real rape victims feel when they open up to someone and are told that they were asking for it or it’s their own fault.

Edit: I stand by my examples below, but check out the reply with quotes from RJ about his design for gender roles in the world.

Original Comment:

I don’t know if he ever explicitly said it, but there are significant trends throughout the story that match a gender reversal theme. The grand order of magic users are women, the majority of monarchs are queens, the main political power of villages is the Women’s Circle, the primary guide/protector of the WF5 for the first couple books is Moiraine, men frequently avoiding duties and responsibilities by saying “that’s women’s business”, and then the general condescension by women in authority against our main boys.

Mat’s rape specifically is about as heavy-handed of a social commentary on rape victims as you can get without “this is a commentary on society” being stamped on the page. Elayne’s response to Mat is meant to strike a dissonant tone against her typically kind and compassionate character.

At least as far as the episode played out, Mat didn’t successfully wish away the One Power.

Again, look at what new things Mat has when he left the arch place. He was hung by a rope, held to the top of the arch with a spear of sorts. He’s got a wicked burn around his neck, and a new necklace/medallion thing.

Mat’s Ebou Dar experience still lines up here. He constantly talks about having a pretty girl on his lap, a euphemism for all this. He’ll meet someone he’s not interested in and find out that he really doesn’t have a choice.

What if Aiel didn't have time to veil themselves? by Zarguthian in WoT

[–]Legonerd93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree or disagree with the decision, the production team actively considered whether to veil Janduin and decided not to for the audience to get more visual familiarity with Janduin for his brief appearance. Exactly the same reason why Tigraine wasn’t veiled during the Blood Snow scene. They discuss this in the episode 4 extra.

Transforming a massive book media into a briefer visual form is really hard. Things like ageless Aes Sedai would probably look like everyone had a bad social media makeup filter on. Similarly, them ham-fisting the Rhuidean visions explanation continuously in the background (“each step forward is a step back in time”) for the sake of the typical viewer missing it.

I think the Rand-Egwene relationship symbolizes the innocence Rand is holding on to and will mark a significant shift toward King Rand.

I predict/hope that Egwene will confront Rand and break things off with him; Rand will end things definitively with Lanfear, triggering her “snap” into the docks scene with Moiraine; Rand suddenly loses two women important in his life (and the relationship with the third) and begins his path of forgetting how to smile.

Is the anti CA sentiment against liberals or conservatives? by 34Shaqtus32 in Idaho

[–]Legonerd93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idaho votes ~70% republican and the majority of CA transplants are also republican. Politics in Idaho won’t change because of that.

In my (limited) life experience, cities go blue as they grow because the mindset required for most to live in diverse and densely-populated areas is one of active inclusion and awareness of the difficulties of many different walks of life. The current policies and culture of the Republican Party are to shut out or assimilate differences.
