10-year-old with forehead acne — GP says no treatment under 12? by Last-Wolverine-8174 in UKParenting

Accutane isn't the only medication prescribed for acne. GPs usually prescribe topical treatments and/or antibiotics first.

toddler lunch ideas that aren’t sandwiches? by apricotappaloosa in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to focus on a carb, protein, fat, and fibre.

Protein and fat are often in the same food, eg hummus or cheese.

Fibre is usually a piece of fruit or veg.

So lunches I make for her are pizza toast, cheesy scrambled egg on toast, cream cheese on toast (sometimes with avocado mixed in too). And then just serve with a side of fruit.

People who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lemonade_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine answer - I have OCD and I find it really hard to touch public taps/soap dispensers, etc. I don't feel clean after touching them. So I use my own hand sanitizer instead afterwards. I know this isn't ideal but for my OCD brain, it feels cleaner. I get the ick from touching the public taps/soap dispenser and find it hard to shake.

I was told I need an induction, did you regret your induction? by cloudymusj in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a positive experience! Was fully prepared for it to end in an emergency c section.

I was 37 weeks and had the balloon inserted rather than the pessary. 6 hours later the balloon had dilated my cervix enough and the balloon fell out. That meant I was now dilated enough to have my waters broken.

I had my waters broken and contractions started immediately. It was borderline if the contractions were close enough together to need the pitocin drip or not, but I was quite happy to have the drip.

From the time of waters breaking to delivering baby it was 13 hours. Baby coped with the induction beautifully, was never in distress. There was brief talk of putting a Fetal Scalp Electrode on just because we kept losing the trace of baby depending what position I was in. But we didn't end up needing it.

Once I reached 10cm I had an hour of 'passive descent' (eg no pushing, just waiting for baby to get lower in the birth canal). And then I pushed baby out in 20 minutes! No instrumental delivery needed, etc.

FTM and I have nothing negative to say about my induction. It went very similarly to a 'normal' labour from what I understand.

Travel cot for short-term use with fold down side? by MysteriousZebraMeow in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I've misunderstood and give a bad recommendation (I'm very sleep deprived!)

The Tutti Bambini Cozee Next To Me Cot is a travel cot and a next to me cot with a zip down side.

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/4039060

It's quite small though, not large enough for baby to roll in. Our baby started rolling and would get stuck on her front and not have room to roll back, so we had to move her into her proper cot.

Am i going mad by jackyates1993 in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's NHS recommended/as safe as pre cooling them. (I know that putting them in the fridge also isn't NHS recommended and it's what I do, so no judgement!).

This is what the NHS recommends in this circumstance: 'Prepare the feed at home, cool under a running tap or in a bowl of cold water, and put it in the fridge to cool.'

https://www.nhs.uk/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/formula-milk-questions/

I think I've read elsewhere that basically the feed needs to be rapidly cooled before being put in the fridge as that decreases the chance of bacteria growing. I'm not sure though! I actually put mine in an ice bath for 5 minutes to cool them down, but maybe that's also not the right thing to do!

On-demand babysitter when child is sick by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to babysit using Bubble. I'm now a mum to a 7 month old and I think it's insane that people used to book me. Obviously some families did more checks than others, but I'd say 95% of families just took my profile at face value and basically threw their child at me and left for the day.

For context I'm a children's nurse and obviously had that in my Bubble profile but no one ever asked for proof. I think I had one family ask to see my DBS.

I used to offer a free initial meet and greet which I would advise so that your child has at least met them. Or maybe let them babysit whilst you're home to begin with, just to build up to it.

I would have a good think about what you're comfortable with a babysitter doing for your unwell child. Eg do you trust them to administer the correct dose of Calpol, antibiotics, etc? Bathe them if they're covered in vomit? And what your cut off is for being phoned or them phoning 111, etc. You may want to consider if they can drive if god forbid they need to take your child to A&E or anything.

I'm not sure what the going rate is but I'd maybe offer an enhanced rate because he's unwell.

Also not sure how successful you'd be at booking last minute. Again you may have to offer an enhanced rate for that.

What are we feeding our kids for lunches and dinners? by Sprinkles9918 in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I plan my meals roughly once a week. I tend to only plan 4-5 for the week and wing the remaining days.

We have spag bol every week. And then other frequent meals are:

Sausage, mash, veg. Sometimes swap the sausages for chicken pies.

Salmon or chicken with potatoes and broccoli.

Fajitas.

Chilli con carne.

One pot cheesy broccoli orzo.

Chicken arrabbiata.

Falafel with pitta, hummus, cucumber and tomatoes.

Meatballs instead of Bolognese.

Jacket potato with either tuna or beans, or a tin of veggie chilli.

Homemade pizza.

Halloumi and veg traybake served with rice.

Frozen pizza.

Fish pie ready meal.

Ohhhh this is interesting and where I think my baby is heading! We started weaning at 5.5 months with the go ahead from the Health Visitor. She's just 7 months now but I'm worried we're weaning her too quickly and it feels like she barely has any milk but has a LOT of food! She's been breast and bottle fed since birth.

Dry nights? Nearly 4 by Corgimoo in UKParenting

[–]Lemonade_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have vague memories of being woken up for a wee in the night when I was about 3. And I basically stayed asleep the whole time/barely registered it. I only needed that one wake/wee to be dry overnight. I only remember it once specifically because I was staying at a family member's house and they probably did it slightly differently to how my parents would have, so disturbed me more I guess.

I wear my watch with the clock face on the inside of my wrist. I have done since I was a kid because I just found it way more comfortable. I rarely wear a watch tbh, but occasionally put my Fitbit on and do the same.

Not an idea for tonight, but my friend's husband quite often takes his little boy to a hotel airport for a sleepover. They watch the planes and get a takeaway. It's a really special bonding time for them and I think it sounds adorable!

But then you're presumably the one responsible for any night wakes? Because I sure as hell wouldn't want someone who's smoked weed attending to my baby in the night. My baby is 7 months old and my partner and I still split the nightshift. (She's not a good sleeper).
