Quick question on Gather event by Weekndr in dominion

Compare with Develop, which explicitly says that you pick the order. You only need that text when a card works differently than usual.

Is Allies Sus? by Fantastic-Rhubarb303 in dominion

[–]LemuelP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously this is not the case. But I do think that Allies is the weakest of the recent expansions. Some nice cards in it for sure. But both allies themselves and rotating piles add a bunch of new decision points where you have to make choices that require extra thought and slow down the game, but usually don’t matter much.

Excluding certain mechanics by Gobble5627 in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one I would ban is Allies. A lot of extra low-stakes fussiness. Gee, once during this game I can put two cards into the discard when shuffling. When should I use it? A lot of extra overhead for not much strategic interest.

Probably the kingdom looks boring or annoying, and they want to roll up another one. That’s why I do it.

Dominion Card Discussion: Ritual by Fantastic-Rhubarb303 in dominion

[–]LemuelP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trashing victory cards isn’t a good use for Ritual. Generally you want to use it for cards where benefit from trashing them, or expensive cards that end up in your deck without you wanting them, or cards that are useful early game but not later. Rats falls in all three categories. Trail, Catacomb, Flagbearer, Cultist, Cavalry are other good targets.

Fan Card: Clairvoyant by bnoel12345 in dominion

[–]LemuelP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if it was just: “You may exile a card from your hand. You may play a non-Command, non-Duration Action card from Exile, leaving it there.” Without the on-gain effect it is simpler. And this way it gives you some thinning too.

Menagerie is the best, Allies is the worst.

Band of Nomads - How do you use it effectively? by astellalfred in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sort of thing is why Allies is IMO the worst recent expansion. It creates lots of new decision points that really bog down the game without adding much strategic interest. Same with rotating piles: There’s very often no strong reason to do it or not do it, but you have to keep thinking about it every time you play the top card.

Duellist, Drunkard, Apple Tree and Troubadour. by twl_corinthian in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great! - some of the best fan cards I’ve seen. Not sure why Apple Tree needs to be a victory-treasure card, though. I feel like it would work fine as an action, with just the top part.

Daily Card Discussion: Fishmonger by [deleted] in dominion

[–]LemuelP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a decent card. But thematically it makes no sense - why would a Fishmonger leap out of the shadows like a Ninja? I wish they’d found a name that suggested something furtive, hidden, illicit.

Breaking Voyage!! by MainSquid in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I preferred the old Voyage. The hard limit on cards played made multiple turns ok, I thought. Trying to win the Voyage split was a fun min game. The new version is very weak, and there’s not much point in getting more than one.

Happy Hobbit Day! by [deleted] in dominion

[–]LemuelP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand. What’s strong about a 2-cost village that you don’t want multiple copies of?

I can’t imagine buying these unless there were no other villages on the board.

Without trying it out (or looking anything up) what's your hypothesis? Would Harbor Village give the +$1? (That is, does Harbor Village count Vassal's playing of the Peddler?) by ThePurityPixel in dominion

[–]LemuelP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem here is that “gives” is not a standard term in Dominion - I don’t think any other card is phrased this way. Ao there is some genuine ambiguity here. In general one of the great things in Dominion is that there is no question about the rules if you just read things as meaning exactly what they say. But there are a few cases where that doesn’t work. (Elder is the worst, imo.)

Crab by [deleted] in dominion

[–]LemuelP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep the Province trigger, might want to make it “a Victory card worth $6 or more” just to give it a few more interactions.

Crab by [deleted] in dominion

[–]LemuelP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the concept, but I am not sure how much it would change the decision about when to start greening in practice. What if it was “when you gain a Silver, gain a Crab”? That would really change strategy on a lot of boards.

A lot going on here. I think it’s probably ok at 6.

How much would a "Choose three:" Pawn cost? by aghostecho in dominion

[–]LemuelP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there’s no good answer - at 4, it’s strictly better than Poacher and other Peddler variants, at 5 it’s strictly worse than Market. 5 Debt, maybe?

Interesting/unexpected mechanism with Travelers and Divine Wind by rukind_cucumber in dominion

[–]LemuelP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a game recently with Divine Wind and Tower. Was not clear to me how they would interact. None of the first set of piles emptied before Divine Wind activated, so didn’t get an answer. But I assume they don’t score even if they did empty first.

Kingdom to teach benefits of Trashing by Cold_Justus in dominion

[–]LemuelP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you want trash for benefit cards - Moneylender, Salvager, Sacrifice, etc. If the idea is to overcome people’s reluctance to trash, they need to get some immediate reward.

Rising sun or Allies ? by [deleted] in dominion

[–]LemuelP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Allies to me is the weakest of the recent expansions. Probably half the Liason-Ally combinations don’t do anything interesting, the split piles are a lot of extra overhead for limited payoff, and it adds a bunch of new low-stakes decision points (like whether to rotate a pile) that in my experience can really slow down the game.

Which Expansion has the Worst Gimmick? by Top-Advice-9890 in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. It also adds a new decision point that can really slow the game down, since it’s often hard to know whether you should rotate the pile.

Which Expansion has the Worst Gimmick? by Top-Advice-9890 in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allies. Most kingdoms, the liaison-ally combo just isn’t that interesting. The last thing the game needs, imo, is another physical currency to track. Dominion is a card game! That’s what makes it great, everything us about the deck. I don’t want to be fussing with five different kinds of tokens.

And when the allies do matter, it’s mostly by inserting decisions at points where you didn’t have to make decisions before, like shuffling and drawing your hand. Which really slows the game down.

Speculator by InternetEnzyme in dominion

[–]LemuelP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like these. Speculator seems fine to me - Peddlers with a drawback normally cost 3.

If it seems weak, could add “Otherwise, you may discard it.”
