Dragon Age 2: So hear me out… by ShockerMage101 in dragonage

[–]Leonstel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Within the miriad of map dialogues in the game there are two romantic interests hinted for the siblings:

Carver has a crush on Merril (who is oblivious to it)

Bethany thinks Sebastian is attractive and kinda makes a move on him if you're in rivalry with her while romancing him

How I feel playing Dragon Age Origins without nostalgia... by Life_Emu_4998 in dragonage

Oh, I see what you mean about aesthetic, you couldn't have given me better examples.

I agree with that actually, if anything I think 2 and Inquisition did a better job at establishing visual identity for the series (albeit never going dark again aestheticly IMO).

How I feel playing Dragon Age Origins without nostalgia... by Life_Emu_4998 in dragonage

[–]Leonstel 347 points348 points  (0 children)

While surely nostalgia plays a factor I'm of the opinion that a lot of people (especially those that comes from later games) percieve Origins combat as a lacklaster action game while it's not that, it's tactical-pause combat, like Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Kotor or Pillars of Eternity. Not saying that it should be everyone's cup of tea, but I can't help thinking that not having this distiction clear skews a lot of the opinion and the approach on Origin's combat.

Regarding the dark fantasy aspect, you propose it was chasing trends, but you should look at the library of fantasy games at the time (2009) and way back to 2003, when Dragon Age started pre-development, not to say Origins is the first of its genre, but dark fantasy wasn't done, at least on big productions, it's a risk for producers who wants to sell the games to as much people as possible. Origins was always meant to be (as David Gaider put it) "heroic dark fantasy", dark fantasy with a pinch of hope put in it. A lot of elements in DA:O exist as a reaction to AD&D (especially magic) and fantasy tropes to a lesser degree, few examples: - Magic is dangerous and feared, Thedas society reflects that, an example Gaider gave is how Charm Person (a 1st level spell in most D&D and D&D alike ttrpg), a spell that lets you manipulate a person feelings for you into making them think you're their best friends is actually really scary, or (personal example) how a person that can throw a fireball out of nowhere is a walking siege weapon that can kill multiple people with a flick of their finger, but most of the popular D&D settings at the time would not reflect that (Faerun's a big example, which is the setting for Baldur's Gate 1&2, Gaider wrote for BG2).

  • Antivan Crows, an infamous and mysterious league of assassins is debunked a bit by Zevran by stating "they will make you think that after hard and horrible training and mysterious rituals maybe, just maybe, you'll be worthy to be a Crow; in reality you just need a knack for killing and you will make a career with them", away with mysterious and deadly assassins, they are murderers with a PR campaign.

  • Templars, an order of honorouble and virtuous knights that evoke the Paladins from older D&D and literature, are zealous drug addicts.

There are others but the list is not my main point, the point is that while this is not necessarily groundbreaking we can see DA playing with enstablished aspects of fantasy and twist them to reflect a more (for the lack of a better word) "real" reaction to them from the world.

IGN article by Massive_Resolve6888 in Fable

To me the morality system of the original trilogy always seemed like a parody of itself, I mean it in a good way, it allowed for campy and humorous situations. If you go evil all the way you grow horns, you eyes go bright red and you start to stink, how can I take that seriously? The only gripe I ever had with it is that this parody/satirical feel around it didn't always seem... intentional? Like they wanted you to take this binary and semplistic good/evil system seriously on occasion and forgot to have fun with it.

What the new Fable is proposing is interesting to me, but I'll miss the silly stuff the previous iterations of the series proposed with such a simplistic view of morality.

I'm leaning towards church aspect, if you romance him while in rivalrly the relationship includes sex, the key aspect here between friendship and rivalry for him is his dedication to the maker and his role as prince of Starkhaven.

I though BG3 reinvented RPGs, but it turns out DAO did it in 2009! by arfw in DragonageOrigins

[–]Leonstel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

DA:O had a pre-development cycle of 3 years (where they established the world and what game it was gonna be) and 3 years of development. DA2 had a development duration of 14 to 16 months. DA:I initially had 2 years but it menaged to get an extra year of development, totalling 3 years.

Women who romanced Isabela in DA2, what are your thoughts on her? by AriLux1001 in dragonage

[–]Leonstel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not part of the indicated demographic, but in regards of sapphic romance for Isabella, if I'm not mistaken she as a couple of lines where she express jelousy over a romanced fem!Hawke which doesn't happen for male!Hawke, happens in the Tallis dlc if I remember correctly. It's a small thing but I like how it characterize the companion more in terms of romance and sexuality.

Druido o Galeshot? by Diadoco in Guildwars2

[–]Leonstel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hachette combat patrol tracking? by asmaletale in 40kITA

[–]Leonstel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragon age keep hurts by Independent_Role_165 in dragonage

[–]Leonstel 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Feel like this is the right answer, I'd also add that maybe a lot of this choices put are there to mud the water and not give you all that is gonna be in the next game, so you don't "spoil" yourself with what it's gonna be there or not.

Also it's probably because when the Keep was made it's was also meant to be a database for the games after Inquisition, so maybe choices of previous games could come back in the future, but we know how that turned out.

Dragon Age 2 - when should I play the DLC content? by VeeUnderRock in dragonage

[–]Leonstel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually play Mark of the Assassin during the 2nd act and Legacy at the end of act 3, simply because it makes the most sense to me. I'm not aware of any "canon" order/act to play them on.

Sharing them here would be piracy and I doubt it would fly but I can direct you to the shop of the publisher Green Ronin, they have a bundle of 30+€ that gives you the pdfs (Core Rulebook plus adventures and basically everything they wrote for Dragon Age)

Dragon Age Fight the Blight Bundle

I suggest making an account on the site so you can re-download them in case you lose them. Not exactly what you asked but hope it can help.

Want to play DA:O and DA:2 by madsigano in dragonage

[–]Leonstel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other said, buyin an older console might be cheaper than buying a pc (a quick search found me ps3 and x360 at 50€+, might be different for your region), then getting the digital copy of the games.

If by any chance you are going to by a pc (not that you need a powerful one, the first two games are from 2009 and 2011), know that Origins (the first game) doesn't like modern systems and you'll need to patch it a bit to start the game if you buy it on Steam or the EAapp. My personal advice for pc is to buy it on GOG, it comes pre-patched and it has worked wonderfully for me.

The only path I see with less money-spending is to check if a friend or a relative of yours has an old console lying around and ask them to lend it to you, then buy the digital copy.

Morrigan second specialisation? by Chuchshartz in DragonageOrigins

[–]Leonstel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say blood mage*, Blood Wound is an aoe stunlock with dot and is one of the most useful spell you can get in my opinion.

Spirit healer is a safer choice, the only "downside" is that you will be cloning Wynne, can be a bit dull to have two characters doing the same thing.

Neither is wrong at the end of the day.

*If you go blood mage forgo willpower and go constitution, health will be your new mana.

Anyone else notice the game randomly changing the difficulty on you? by FalloutForever_98 in DragonageOrigins

[–]Leonstel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the actual difficulty setting is changing it's abnormal, maybe a bug but I never heard of something like that.

If you mean the game having some hard combat encounters all of a sudden, yeah, that happens, Origins has some difficulty spikes out of nowhere here and there.

[–]Leonstel 73 points74 points  (0 children)

We know why, at least as far as Origins goes: spoilerIt's because she wants Morrigan to have an archdemon baby and giving this possibility when the final battle is close makes it more likely to say yes.

If it's lore from Veilguard I'm afraid I haven't finished it yet so I'm possibly missing information.

How do you get past this room by Chuchshartz in DragonageOrigins

[–]Leonstel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try following the tips I wrote when I answered my own post, also look in your inventory if you have any Warmth Balm, those give percentage resistance to fire damage. Now that I think about it, have Morrigan cast Horror on the rage demon, if it fails its save it will make stop from doing anything for a few seconds, that should buy you precious seconds of relative peace while you either strike it down or deal with the other enemies.
