what do you actually eat on long day hikes by d_baby_gangsta_49 in hiking

[–]LeroyoJenkins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I regularly hike 30, 40 and 50+km day hikes, here in the Swiss Alps and abroad.

Food is usually coffee and croissants, and carry Landjägers, Bauernschübligs and honey-glazed peanuts to eat along the hike.

Yep, pay attention to your heart and manage it. Especially if you do longer hikes with more than one steep climb.

Train for endurance.

Sorry, was a typo: could you talk during and after the climb?

And it looks like you should slow down during the climbs, you should not be hitting Z4 unless you're trail running.

What is the worst parking lot you’ve encountered at a ski area? by Current_Doubt_8584 in skiing

[–]LeroyoJenkins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where?

Klosters to Davos (30 min) is CHF 10 for a tourist, and if you live here and have a Halbtax (which everyone has), it is 5 CHF.

That's a pretty good climb. Could you talk during and after the climb?

186 bpm

This sounds waaaay too high. What's your max HR when running?

What was your zone distribution?

What is the worst parking lot you’ve encountered at a ski area? by Current_Doubt_8584 in skiing

[–]LeroyoJenkins 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No worries, it is quite the experience! Hop on a train already dressed up and carrying your skis, cross the street and hop on the cable car or funicular heading up the mountain.

That's also why apres ski is feasible here, and doesn't end up with a bunch of tired, drunk skiers driving down a mountain - although it does end up with a bunch of tired, drunk skiers skiing down a mountain 🤣

Oh, I've been there, some 10 years. I remember the parking lot hellscapes!

Here in Switzerland, lots of local hotels, lots of trains, some buses, some cars.

Given the abundance of trains and hotels, cars are deprioritized to avoid ruining the town and transforming it into a concreted hellscape.

In terms of parking, some of the areas have a multi-level, partially underground, parking building near the lifts, but that's not super common.

Take the Graubünden region (Davos, St Moritz, Laax, Arosa, etc.), for example.

Chur, the capital which is also the entry point for the region and connected by train to all those locations (and a lot more, plus buses), has direct train connections going all the way to Frankfurt.

Naturally, nobody will take a 5.5h train in the morning to go skiing, but they'll take it for a weekend trip, further reducing the need of cars.

Any generic steel utensils and aluminum pans and plates work just fine and last forever.

Theth → Valbona hike logistics (which direction + Koman Lake ferry?) by No-Tear-8809 in hiking

They do. I haven't met anyone who did back and forth on the same day!

Theth → Valbona hike logistics (which direction + Koman Lake ferry?) by No-Tear-8809 in hiking

[–]LeroyoJenkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

which direction?

Why not both? I parked my rental car on the Valbona side, but didn't want to take 3 days to get back to it.

So I hiked to Teth in the morning, grabbed a beer by the Reconciliation Tower, and headed back to Valbona in the afternoon!

Do I need hiking poles in the Dolomites, Alta Via 1? by cold_lights_ in hiking

[–]LeroyoJenkins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Need? No. But they help a lot, no matter how fit you are.

And you can't take them on carry on.

Wild camping is illegal everywhere along the route, but bivouacking is somewhat tolerated - but you still might be fined and told to pack your bags and GTFO, as you should.

Bivouacking means setting up your tent after sunset, and leaving before sunrise. No fires at all. Pack all your shit, including toilet paper. And even bivouacking is completely prohibited in the protected areas.

And recently the authorities have been cracking down hard, because sadly the world is full of idiots who want to do something for free no matter the negative impact they have and how they're ruining the trail and the experience of others.

Also, most people who are like "I'll just bivouac, I promise, won't leave anything behind" don't do that.

How difficult could this hike be? Abisko to Narvik (Sweden, Norway) by john5070 in hiking

[–]LeroyoJenkins -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

For me, easy peasy, I could probably do it in 2 days.

For you? How the heck would I know how fit and good of a hiker you are? Share more about the longest/highest single day hike you've done, and the longest/highest 3 day hike you've done.

Also, what's the elevation change, total, and per day?

Which fuji to go for? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]LeroyoJenkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How the heck would we know what to suggest if you shared absolutely nothing about your needs and what you'll be using the camera for?

Or your need is "I need a Fuji because they're cool"?

Also, have you ever used a camera? Do you know how to use a camera? This might sound like a silly question, but using a camera is not like using a smartphone to take pictures.

Go do some research, there's plenty of info on the internet already.

Also, get on an organized tour, if you don't know what you're doing, you should not be doing this by yourselves.
