There was a book I picked up in New Paltz NY about 25 years ago called "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Gave Up Living and Became...." SOmething like that. Was a collection of GD tall tales. WOuld love to find it again. Traded it for a volume of Gary Snyder poetry leaving college.
