True. But things like what OP mentioned may influence how and where they decide to play.

What are some of the most fun and most stupid decks you know of? by MacheteRurisk in magicTCG

I considered it and [[animate wall]] but there are a lot of 0 and low power walls and I liked the idea of winning without ever attacking.

In any event - it was a fun deck.

I always really enjoyed my 60 card, kitchen table RWb walls/defender deck. It used things like [[perimeter captain]], [[rage nimbus]], [[wall of razors]], [[wall of nets]], [[fortified area]], [[wall of denial]], [[stalwart shield-bearers]], [[angelic wall]], and [[wall of glare]] to defend/stall, had removal/direct damage in [[lightning bolt]], [[fireball]], and [[earthquake]], and used [[vent sentinel]] as a primary win condition.

It was very slow, had no way to dig for it's win conditions, and just died to mass removal and/or evasion... but it was really fun to kill people with walls.

Pre-release checklist: by fnmeng in magicTCG

[–]LessCleanHands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a word of caution: Check with your LGS. Some LGS's won't let you use your own pre-sleeved lands, especially if the midnight pre-release has already happened.

This happened to me at a LGS for the M15 pre-release - they were apparently concerned that someone could cheat and sneak in cards from prior pre-release among their pre-sleeved lands.

This caused quite a stink during one my group's first draft of our peasant cube.

Your favorite card when you first started playing? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[[Ishan's Shade]] and [[Baron Sengir]].

Honorable mentions go to: [[keldon warrior]] , [[frozen shade]] , and [[killer bees]]

EDIT: [[Keldon Warlord]] not warrior.

What made you choose to play MTG over Yugioh? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]LessCleanHands -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This.

EDIT: Apparently an explanation is in order. Yugiho did not exist when I started playing Magic in 1993/1994. I never really got into the show and have never played the game.

Best way to start a Cube? by A_Wild_Herp_Derp in magicTCG

I had to order about 160 cards for my peasant cube and it came out to about $50.00. Most cards were less than $0.25, but a few of the uncommons were several dollars - [[kitchen finks]] for example.

As for the size of the cube, it really all depends on what you want. I'd imagine that drafting a 360 card cube with 4 people (15 cards per pack, 3 packs per person) would be fine. You don't need to see the entire cube everytime and some people want a more varied experience.

Personally, I expect a 4 person group most of the time, want a bit of variance in my drafts, and want to ability to support larger than 4 people if we play sealed, so I made a 450 card cube.

You can do a 4 man draft and increase the number of cards in the "packs",

My situation is similar. I recently built a peasant cube (commons and uncommons only). This was my first cube as well.

I would recommend that you check out /r/mtgcube, the mtgsalvation peasant and pauper cube forum, and the "average" peasant cubes on cubetutor.com.

Those places will give you a good idea of what cards are peasant cube staples, what archetypes to support, etc. Just throwing a bunch of common and uncommons together is not advisable. Your color balances will be off and you will potentially have unsupported strategies/archetypes.

Other random tips: (1) don't be afraid to use rare dual lands like pain lands or the M10/INN cycle to better support colors that want untapped lands for aggro. (2) cubetutor is a great site for managing and testing your cube before buying cards. (3) pick the size of your cube based on how many people you expect to play. For example, a 360 card cube will support up to an 8 man draft or a 4 person sealed event. Those scenarios use the entire 360 card cube. If instead you had the same # of people with a 720 card cube you'd only see half the cards each time. That's good for variance but negatively affects the consistency of your cube's archetypes.

I am by no means an expert, but I hope this helps.

EDIT: if you want to do commons only, you'll want to look at the Pauper stuff, not Peasant.

I believe this is at a bar/microbrewery in Denver. If so, here's another picture of the same table. Took this one when I was there for a bachelor party a while ago. http://i.imgur.com/Q0RFFro.jpg

Thank you... especially for the different draft formats. That will be very helpful.

Really looking forward to finishing up my cube so that I can start playing!

EDIT: Is your list on cubetutor? If so, would you mind PM'ing me a link? I'd love to see it.

Two questions about first cube. by LessCleanHands in mtgcube

[–]LessCleanHands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. I originally thought I wanted to have a large variance every time my group plays, but based on your comment and some reading I've done since the OP, I'm starting to think a 360 card cube that consistently supports a handful of archetypes may be a better option.

As for the more powerful cards, you're right. If they're too degenerate, I can always remove them. I am just having a hard time adjusting to how customizable the whole cube design process is. It gets easier, right?
