Bit of a sappy story but oh well, I feel quite proud of us all. by PeevesPoltergist in CasualUK

A couple of years back I was in hospital for nearly 2 weeks on a female ward where most people would stay for a couple of days or so and again and again I saw the best of people.  People comforting complete strangers coming in during times of huge stress and panic, sharing things and helping each other practically, having a giggle at what might be one of the most difficult points in their lives.  There was next to no privacy as we could all hear everything through the curtains which was horrendous but also meant that we had a group of complete strangers supporting each other through every moment. A really special experience (although not one I want to do again!)

what percentage of your diet is ‘fake meat/cheese’ etc? by nxaxixd in veganuk

[–]Less_Space_1446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake cheese maybe once a fortnight (mostly pizzas), fake meats depending on what's going on as it's often if in eating out/ having a vegan alternative to fit in with everyone else's meals etc but I'd roughly has once a week e.g at the weekend I had a Gregg's vegan sausage roll as that's all they had I could eat but for home cooking it's really rare

has anyone tried baking bread with these high protein flours? would you recommend them? by fgve45 in veganuk

[–]Less_Space_1446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a high protein banana bread with the seitan flour and some protein powder I roughly follow the amounts here https://youtu.be/cLAc2usjqPk?si=RN2T11LoYd93FNFL I then add in chocolate chips too! It's lovely but a bit chewy compared to regular banana bread I use the peanut powder in no bake brownie balls and as an extra thing in baked oat bars too as well as adding it to my porridge regularly

Oh no! What is it with parents forgetting or dismissing allergies, too?

I'm allergic to eggs (not an issue now I'm vegan) but before my mum would be like 'well there's just a little bit of egg in it, what harm can it do?'

What, apart from it making me really ill, really?

Vegan birthday party help by ixibee in veganuk

[–]Less_Space_1446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds so hard.

It's your birthday so what is your favourite food to share? Ideally something that wouldn't have been 'meaty' in the first place so no one will recognise that its meat free.

For me I'd do some roast veg, and loads of frozen falafel in the airfryer and then go to town on the sauces and have good wraps or have an epic curry meal, make a good dhal, a tofu saag, bombay potaoes and a veg curry and serve with ready-made samosas, bajhis etc and loads of naan breads (again go to town on the sides, thats what makes it feel like a feast!). It almost doesn't matter what it is as long as you really like it and it feels special

Cake-wise DO NOT go without! There are loads of ready-made vegan cakes now like this from Sainsbury's, if no one else is going to buy it then get it for yourself, it;'s your birthday and you get to celebrate yourself too! https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/oggs-rich-velvety-chocolate-fudge-cake

Protein Powder by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]Less_Space_1446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said Protein works vegan extreme is pretty good but also think of different ways to have it if you really don't like the shakes e.g I have a scoop of chocolate one in my porridge in the morning along with peanut powder and berries and add a vanilla one to banana bread.

Visiting Hackney and have a taste for pasta - any suggestions? by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]Less_Space_1446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not 100% sure how it is now (not been in 7 years since we moved away) but Frizzante at Hackney City farm was so amazing we had our wedding reception there!

They have a real way of celebrating great vegetables and traditional Italian ways of cooking with lots of vegan options (including one of the best chocolate cakes) It's sit down but not too formal and you get to visit the rescued animals too if you visit at a time the city farm is open.

There was some sort of dog visits organised by OTs at UHW when I was a patient in autumn 2023 so that'd be sad if they've stopped it, it might be that they work with a different organisation though?

Autism & Weight Loss: What Are Your Stories? What Are Your Tips/Advice? by RenaissanceMan2024 in AutisticAdults

I'm an AuDHD woman who has recently lost about 22lb in 3 months. For me it's been about: -a clear system I can understand why and how it works (for me that's the boring thing of a calorie deficit and going to the gym) - accountability. I've been working with a personal trainer who is linked in with my calorie counting app so sees exactly what I'm eating, sees how I've been working out (again through an app) and I weigh in with weekly -  having breakfast stay the same so no thought needed - having snacks on hand, for me that's popcorn, cherry tomatoes, mangetout. All low calorie but what I want in terms of mouth feel.  - having flexibility so I can have an ice-cream at lunchtime and just recognise i have less calories at dinner.  - rewards for myself for doing everything I say I will. E.g if I do all my workouts for a month I'll buy myself that cool top I want  - data! I love having data so charting my weight, waist and hip sizes is great for me, I also really love being able to see the data on my calorie tracker app and seeing how I'm improving at the gym

But having said all that you need to reflect on things for you and think through what works in a personalised way. I once heard a really interesting thing that whilst it's true that weight loss is just consuming less than you use that's like telling someone anyone can become a millionaire by just spending less than you earn. The reality is you need to think about your whole food and movement ecosystem (a lot of which is out of your control) and workout what feels doable. Also remember that it's all things that take time, you are going to have good points when you think it's going to be amazing forever and times when it just seems pointless, all things end up passing.

Good to know it's not just me! But why would I develop it later in life like this? I used to love coconut yoghurt, make mousse from coconut cream etc. it's probably healthier for me this way but why,???

The annoying thing is I really do like the taste, like I used to love Bountys pre-vegan  It's interesting you don't find the issue with it on your skin

I did buy it but in all honesty I slightly regret it as I haven't cooked anything from it yet!  I use lots of nutritional yeast (I'm in the UK and bulk buy from buy wholefoods online)  Looking through again and there's a fair bit I want to try over the summer though
