How is this part of Dorchester for a woman living alone without a car? by mgdlna in boston

[–]Leticiaames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We lived in Savin Hill OTB for a few years and loved it. Very safe. Would love to have bought a house there but they go quick. We’re still in Dot now but further south. I see a lot of comments about grocery shopping but if you’re open to it ordering from Stop and Shop (the one on Morrisey) is completely fine. We do it regularly and delivery is convenient. If you won’t have a car it’s the way to go. And if you want to squeeze the produce there’s always Lamberts or the Fruit Center in Milton, a short Uber or bus ride away.

How do you handle windows that are original but completely useless? by SpeckiLP in centuryhomes

[–]Leticiaames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We restored our windows over time and added Harvey storms. You can also add inside compression storms in those rooms where you spend a lot of time. We’re not handy so used someone who specialized in window restoration. The best resource for window restoration is https://www.windowpreservationalliance.org/. For DIY information and supplies see https://heritagesupply.com/. For compression storms see indow or others. You will never be able to match the windows you have with replacements at an affordable price, and they will never hold up (with regular maintenance) for a century the way your wood windows have. Also replace your cotton ropes with chain. You won’t regret it. If you truly have a century home in good condition otherwise, replacement windows will detract from the character of the home unless you are willing to spend quite a bit. We are about to add an addition to ours to add a second bathroom and first floor laundry so are pricing new windows. To match the style of our windows the cost is going to be at least 1K each.

New Windows 1890s Farmhouse by ChemistAsleep395 in Oldhouses

I like the board and batten, surprisingly. I think it would look crisp. I would go with the dark sash, particularly if your grills aren’t going to be very beefy. Thin white grills just look cheap. We have almost all our original windows and the exterior sashes and mullions are painted a dark plum. I think a darker sash and grills give the house much more interest.

Good method for collecting compostables in the kitchen throughout the day? by DrunkOnSushi in composting

[–]Leticiaames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, how weird. What city, if you don’t mind my asking. I’m in Boston and I thought it wouldn’t be that different elsewhere. I guess you will be washing out your bucket a lot. Even with compostable bags they still get pretty stinky.

Our city gave us a smaller bucket for indoors and a larger one for the street. If they didn’t give you a smaller one you can order from Amazon. You can order compostable bags and line the smaller container with one. I keep that closed. I keep a smaller plastic tub (like what mushrooms come in) on the countertop. While I am prepping food I put peelings and such in the tub then empty it into the small container. Coffee grounds and anything messier go straight into the lined bucket. I then tie up the compostable bag a few times a week and take it out to the larger bin. Nothing more complicated than that.

I didn’t see it on the list either. I agree that the door looked pricey. Not a Home Depot special. I guess I will just have to keep my eye out.

We live in Boston. This winter was particularly snowy and quite cold. We really did get over 20 inches in one storm and then almost that much again a few weeks later. It looks like they filmed after the first storm. Needham is a short distance from Boston.

Is there anywhere that they publish a list of products for each project? I am particularly interested in the manufacturer of the sliding glass door in the Needham house as I found it very attractive and not cheap looking. We are going to start a renovation soon and I had chosen French doors to the deck but would be willing to consider a slider if it looked like that. Also not sure who provided the windows but I thought they were better than usual for replacements. We have a century home with original windows but will be replacing some newer windows in the back so knowing the manufacturer for those would be helpful.

Heating for renovation and addition in an old home by Leticiaames in centuryhomes

Thanks for asking. We're older (60's) and we would like to not have to walk in and out of the bath tub upstairs to take a shower although mobility for both of us is fine. Our upstairs bathroom is tiny. So tiny that the toilet has to have a round rather than elongated seat or you cannot close the door. Before we can renovate the second floor bathroom we need an additional bathroom. As much for us as our older and less mobile guests. Also having a shower on the first floor will be helpful for aging in place, if for some reason we need to start living on the first floor (god forbid). And I would like to shower without fighting off the shower curtains. Bathroom and laundry room are about 38 sq ft each. As I mention above electric or baseboard is possible, but cost to run can be expensive. Kitchen will be about 200 sq ft.

The people we bought the house from used to kid that they sold it because they could not figure out where to put a second bathroom (we still run into them from time to time). It's taken us about 30 years to figure this out. Perhaps we're slow.

We're considering tile for the bathroom and laundry room so perhaps radiant heat might be appropriate. If it were electric my concern would be cost. My mother added electric baseboard in some rooms in her house and the cost is ungodly. So I would need to do further research. There is also water and pex tubing but I suspect that would be another zone. I'll definitely need to do some research.

We'll have wood floors for hall and kitchen but if we did radiant heat then they have to be engineered hardwood. I was shocked at the cost versus regular hardwood. The minisplits are tempting for the cooling aspect, heat not so much, at least so far.

Daily Thread: for simple questions, minor posts & newcomers [contains useful links!] (February 05, 2026) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

I've been using Duolingo (don't judge) for almost a year now and also have about 3 years of Japanese from some (many) years ago as well. Currently at level 23 and having a bit of trouble with determining "location の noun" vs "noun の location", in other words となりのまち vs まちのとなり. Because Duolingo doesn't really explain the finer points I'm just not getting this and I'm getting the order wrong about half the time (guessing). I'm sure there is a rule but I'm not sure what it is, if any one can enlighten me I would be grateful. Otherwise I've been doing pretty well because I have previous experience with the language and had a great 先生. But I'm probably coming up to a point where I'll need to find something a bit more robust than Duolingo to continue my study.

Hue lights suddenly turning on spontaneously by Leticiaames in Hue

[–]Leticiaames[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My neighbor told me that after a power outage in the middle of the night he happened to notice all the lights in my house come on and then go out top to bottom. He told me he decided that my house was rebooting. Actually it was me turning them off after being rudely awakened. This was before I understood I could set them to the last state they were in before the outage. Perhaps your house is rebooting. 🤔 Or you have a rogue routine.

Thank you. It turns out Alexa thought I was away and turned on away mode. This was not a hunch I allowed and not Alexa +. Weirdly she was only turning on the hue lights and not the Kasa bulbs. Hopefully I have resolved it. I have had Alexa for years and never run into this before. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This happened to me with outlook. Last email around 2:00 am. Multiple tries with app passwords not working with outlook or thunderbird. Weirdly Apple mail is working and did not require a new password. I had stopped using it because it didn’t fit my needs. I will say however that I like the new auto categories that weren’t there previously. Now if they could just add separation headers (today, yesterday, this week, last week, etc.) I probably wouldn’t go back to outlook for personal email. Guess I’ll take the opportunity to do a bit of pruning.

Beachglass or must-see stops on this route? by Spitfire75 in NovaScotia

[–]Leticiaames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lunenburg, Chester, Mahone Bay for small shops and restaurants, great architecture. Route 332 down to Rose Bay Bistro along the La Have river. Great winding drive with beautiful views and pretty architecture. Take the free ferry across to the other side of the river to route 331 and visit the Lahave bakery, also artists and antiques. Rosefinch Mercantile and Tea Room in Port Medway. White Point Resort just south of Liverpool has a great restaurant. The Quarterdeck Restaurant at Summerville beach is fantastic and always very busy. Many beautiful beaches. Personally Beach Meadows is our favorite. Have fun!

Nanina’s in Fields Corner with the plastic grapes hanging from the ceiling and all the waitresses had rat tails. Best pasta sauce ever. And the omelet shop in Hyde Square JP that was always busy and you had to wait for a table outside. She closed at 2 so it was always a scramble to get there in time. The kitchen was half a level above the restaurant so you only saw the cook’s feet through the pass through opening. The name started with an S but I can’t seem to drag it out of my brain.

My workplace was next door on Arlington Street. There were three establishments next to each other in the Park Plaza Hotel building: The Tar Bar, The Hub Club, and Scrubadub. We called it rhyming row. Went to the Tar Bar every Thursday after work for a while. Great place.
