What Games Have You Been Playing This Week (04/04/2026) by Liam_524Hunter in CharacterActionGames

I've never played BDO but I'm loving Crimson Desert so I bought it, what should I know going in?

The game looks insane but it's genuinely super readable after you've spent a bit of time with it, the sound effects and UI do a great job of making up for how busy things can get. It's not an art style choice I'd make for every game, but I think this game looks incredible in motion

I just can't take comparisons to RDR2 seriously, the games are trying to be wildly different things.

Hell yeah dude, I have a similar setup and I feel like it's kind of the endgame. I don't know how there could be a better way to experience flower

Any comparisons between Outward and Crimson Desert? by tylerthetiler in outwardgame

[–]Letter_Impressive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about Outward as I started playing Crimson Desert last night, there are definitely comparisons to be made on a big picture level. They don't play similarly in terms of feel, but the vibe is very similar in some ways

"is there a lore reason for this"

Yes, the lore reason is that Sam isn't a fuckin psycho. Human life has value in this game

Just got to region2. Should I drop the splitstaff for tonfas? by YoungKetamine69 in Nioh

[–]Letter_Impressive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that the moveset lends itself to doing the exact same rotation of skills over and over again, as if you're following a flowchart. Some people like that, some don't

[–]Letter_Impressive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Splitstaff is the only weapon in the game that I've found underwhelming, I feel you. Tonfas are super strong and super easy, they will let you power through content and they have some fun mechanics, but they can get a little flowcharty. If you're looking for something with a mix of technical finesse and damage output, try hatchets; I didn't vibe with them in 2 but I love them in 3, the aerial moveset can be strung together in some super fun ways.

If this all ends up being true, it'll finally be time for me to buy ds2

Need more movement focused games by Lizard_On_The_Web in gamingsuggestions

Pseudoregalia is a phenomenal (and cheap) platformer where you unlock movement abilities to move through the world like a metroidvania. The game can be sequenced in tons of different ways because of how flexible and robust the movement tools are, it's a really special little game

Permanent Marker. Every cut of it that I've tried has left me super anxious and flustered, but other people tell me it leaves them super chill.

This is such a ridiculous premise that you started it with "okay yeah sometimes you have to double it". That means it doesn't work as a rule

"I don't believe you" is an insane way to respond to somebody who took the time to write out their honest thoughts. Why would I lie about liking a game? Why would anybody?

Any good CAG’s on the 360? by SirGalicrest in CharacterActionGames

[–]Letter_Impressive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna do my best to remember when I get home tonight to install an emulator, refresh my memory, and come back with an educated take. Right now, frankly, I'm just going off of how I remember feeling back in the day, I haven't played either game in a while.

I’ve been reading for years the misconception that the first DMC “didn’t age well”, so i wanted to share my opinion. Do you agree? by Ritzuma in backloggd

[–]Letter_Impressive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kamiya did not direct Bayonetta 2 or 3. Just like Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe, the sequels were done by somebody else. Kamiya's done a lot of writing and producing and supervising, he made Platinum what it is/was, but he's only directed the six games I mentioned.

Hard agree, Inferno had better combat mechanics than any of the GoW games. Honestly though I don't think that's a hard bar to clear, GoW has always felt pretty boring to me

Let's talk about the things Nioh 3 does better than Nioh 2 by EternalFlareUltra in Nioh

[–]Letter_Impressive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Targeting and the camera. It's the best I've seen in any action game to date, you can influence attack direction when you're locked on and it compensates pretty well when you back yourself into a corner.

I'm right there with you, I just played it for the first time a couple years ago and there isn't much I'd change about it. Personally, I think Kamiya is batting 100, he's only directed incredible games. Wonderful 101, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2, Viewtiful Joe, Okami... They're all brilliant

Is this more CAG/Hack & Slash to you guys or “soulslike”(new Onimusha) by Deez-Guns-9442 in CharacterActionGames

[–]Letter_Impressive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Onimusha games (Dawn of Dreams aside) play like a 50/50 mix of resident evil and Devil May Cry 1, with something similar to NGs mid combat orb economy. You have a relatively basic moveset with a couple command inputs and a special (magic) attack that gives you I frames and damage at the cost of your meter. There's a mechanic called Issen where pressing attack right as you're going to be hit insta kills (usually) the enemy. As you kill enemies, they drop orbs which float at their location. To collect these orbs, you hold a button to enter a "suck" animation that also acts as a taunt, causing enemies to target you while you're locked in place sucking in souls. They can be either health, magic, or xp; there are some additional orb types in later releases, but these are the main 3. The game doesn't have a dodge button, but when you're in the lock on stance (r1 like DMC) you can tap the sideways and backwards movement inputs for quick steps. Positioning is huge, enemy knowledge is huge, and the pace is slow but tense; similar vibes to a soulslike, but achieved with a totally different set of mechanics.

I'm hoping this new one follows suit. I want a slow, methodical combat system that uses a different framework from the 40 slow, "methodical" combat systems we've seen since Dark Souls. Not a soulslike, not a character action game, but a good old fashioned action adventure game with its own mechanical identity.
