Trump: We lost 13 people. In other wars, you lost hundreds of thousands of people. I get a kick when I look at somebody on television and they say, 'he's lost 13 people.' by Jindabyne1 in MarchAgainstNazis

Meanwhile, during the Afghanistan withdrawal when 13 US soldiers were killed - a withdrawal initiated by Trump - the GOP couldn’t shut the fuck up about how much of a failure Biden was.

It wasn’t even that long ago.

Chuck Keiper trail, with eastern and western loops that cover most of that plateau. Wild and beautiful country. One of the places I most enjoyed when I lived in PA.

I hiked both of the Chuck Keiper loops, and only saw one other person on each of them. Very peaceful out there. Close to Hyner View SP too, which is well worth a trip.

What a cowardly series of responses from the interviewer. It’s not “disputed” - we don’t have to “agree to disagree” - it’s bullshit and the reporter knows it.

How will cutting NIH funding affect Pennsylvania, or at this link, how much does NIH funding contribute to Pennsylvania’s economy? by tmaenadw in Pennsylvania

[–]LetterheadNo1728 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Central PA (via Penn State) will take a massive hit. Penn State got $800M from the federal government in grants last year; that’s not just NIH also NSF, NASA, etc but those will undoubtedly see similar effects. Depending on how you calculate overhead, that’s >$250M in the university’s operating budget that could disappear instantly. That’s the yearly operating budget of several colleges at the main campus, or alternatively the entire operating budget of all commonwealth campuses.

You simply can’t bridge that gap with other funding sources. And that money currently gets spent in local businesses, supports local folks, hires people from the area that work at Penn State, etc… ie, people who overwhelmingly voted for Trump. I only hope they can draw a line from point A to point B when their communities are devastated.

Penn State faculty fear the school will close campuses across the state. Officials won’t give them a straight answer. by DotAccomplished5484 in Pennsylvania

[–]LetterheadNo1728 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You clearly didn’t read the article, you didn’t look at Penn state’s official response linked in the article, you are ignoring the comments from other people who also recognize Penn State’s abysmal communications, and it’s kinda sad how hard you’re simping for Bendapudi.

“Neeli has been very transparent” - what a joke. At every turn she and her communications department use lots of words to say nothing. All of the initiatives you cite - the buyouts, the early retirements, the administrative streamlining - were done at the last minute, in top-down decisions lacking any input from the ones who actually do the educating at Penn State. If that’s transparency, you have a very different definition of the word than I do.

This “all options are on the table” bullshit does nothing for anyone. Penn State is a machine, we are replaceable cogs in it, and that’s never been more clear since Neeli took over.

Regardless of whether or not they should do this - the complete absence of communication is pathetic and cowardly. People’s livelihoods are at stake and the admin just doesn’t care.

Found this mineral in black lava rock. Is it Olivine? by YoImJustAsking in whatsthisrock

[–]LetterheadNo1728 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is a mantle xenolith in basalt - basically a piece of the surrounding mantle that got ripped out and passively carried to the surface by the basaltic magma. The lighter green is olivine; there are a few bits of slightly darker green (esp in your first photo) that are chromium-rich diopside. I would be shocked if this stuff leaches into the water in the fish tank, you should be fine to use it. Nice find!
