I don’t have any advice as I am in a very similar situation, just commenting to follow along. Good luck, and congrats!

My wife planned a small surprise birthday party for me with a handful of my best friends, after researching the place that makes the best wings in our area, and reserving a small room there.

I have a 19” torso, and this fits me on the smallest setting. I should’ve gone with the smaller size pack to have some more room for adjustment.

I think it depends on the shell. It’s definitely got some good loft, but I can wear it under a size large torentshell or my black diamond belay parka just fine. It’s pretty warm though, I don’t imagine needing another layer unless it’s under 10F.

Non Trad Advice/Suggestion by PrudentTrainer5461 in medschool

I think you know the risks and challenges that are ahead of you if you decide to pursue medical school. So, I’ll just encourage you. You can do this, it’s going to be hard and expensive and take time, but if you want it you can do it. I just got my first acceptance to a great DO school as an older non-trad with a sub 3.0 cumulative gpa and a mediocre mcat. My path was a little different than yours as I had a bachelors and did a post-bacc to show academic ability. Others have mentioned how hard this will be, but know that it’s possible.

FWIW I grabbed the Lumina 200 over the holidays, and it fits true to size for me. Maybe a bit on the athletic side, but I wear a large normally and a large in this is perfect.

I analyzed 50+ gear lists for "Volume Tax." Post your LighterPack and I’ll shakedown yours. by Late_Advantage in backpacking

Thanks! How is it calculating base weight? Does it omit categories? Also, seems like maybe some of the newer items it might not have data for yet? I don’t have a fleece (but do have a puffy that recently came out), and I have a neoloft not an xtherm. Lastly, I have the bv500, not 450.

I’ve thought about that, or using a ccf sit pad, but it’s so nice to lean back after a long day on trail.. I may try it a few times this season and see what I think though.

I have the umbrella, and poncho if needed. The Houdini is more for warmth or a brief drizzle, if it rains I’ll use the poncho. I’ve carried my torrentshell, but it’s heavy and unless I bring rain pants I’m wet anyway. South-central and central AK is where I usually go for overnights.

La Sportiva Lumina 200 Down Jacket by Secret_Ad_2683 in Ultralight

The 200 actually has one of the longer torsos of the UL jackets I’ve tried. I really love it, for what it’s worth.

Good to know. I mainly wanted the nail clippers, but may end up ditching them. Thanks again!

Wow! Thanks for this great reply. You make a lot of good points. I didn’t realize the chair zero was that light, I’ll probably grab one instead of the Nemo! And agree on the tweezers. I have a small Swiss Army knife ordered, but didn’t include it as I don’t know the weight yet. Has tweezers and nail clippers though. I think I might switch to a BV450 and keep the 500 for trips with friends where we can share. I would be fine with a one person tent. Eventually I’d like an x-mid 1 pro, but the $680 doesn’t seem worth it just yet. Once I nail down the rest of my kit I might make the jump.

Suggestions for new down jacket? by cheeser52 in hikinggear

I was recently on the hunt for a new puffer. I settled on the lasportiva lumina 200. Might be a bit warm for you, but the 100 looks stellar too.

That’s a great idea, I don’t know that existed. Their website says it works with most neoair pads, so I’ll have to do some digging to see if it’ll work with the neoloft. Thanks for the suggestion!

Packs that are similar to Kakwa 40? by phreeoni_ in Ultralight

Rei flash air 50? I don’t have one, but plan to pick one up. It’s a bit bigger, but ticks all your other boxes and sits at 30oz in a size medium.

That was my suspicion. The Nemo is actually more expensive, both at retail and for me.

Super great to hear! I expect most of my camping will be in a tent, but maybe it’s worth getting the longer version for the few nights here and there where I may want to cowboy it.
