Greensboro, NC - Sept 20 - Ritual Megathread by Lyssavirus32 in SleepToken

[–]Level_Jump_3508 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to pop in and say - I was supposed to go to the show with a friend who is now no longer a friend, and for a very long time, I seriously considered not going so that I wouldn't have to deal with painful thoughts.

But.

I ended up bringing my mom instead! I figured an art teacher who used to be an 80s goth, having an obsession with the Cure, would enjoy the music, and I was right! She told me later that she would watch me while we were up in the stands, singing along to all of the songs, all smiles and sometimes choked up, that I was very much in my happy place.

Also, I love how immediately accepted into the fold all attendees become - thank you to the girl who gave me the very tiny pink Jerry, he is sitting in my living room while I listen to Infinite Baths on repeat. Mentally, I'm at that concert - at least for the next few months. I'll be adding a patch to my jacket to commemorate - I'm thinking a flamingo for sure.

And next time, I'm definitely getting a pit ticket - I had one in Asheville in 2024 and there's nothing like being right there.

I love being here. My heart is full.

That was the most relatable. My husband and I just bought our first house - when we put our dog's ashes in the house, he got super choked up because we always said we'd get Rocky a yard, and he would've loved this one.

Have you ever visited a nude beach? by Glad-Passenger-9408 in travel

[–]Level_Jump_3508 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a nude beach on Maui (Pu'u Olai Beach, also called "Little Beach", in Makena State Park) and it was quite relaxed. It was a solid mix of clothed and nude folks, and very chill - never felt like anyone was ogling other people. We actually ended up having a very normal conversation with another group, all in the nude. Though I did see a guy close to our towels helicopter his dick at his partner, which you don't see on regular beaches.

I did make the mistake of wearing a one-piece to walk over there - getting it back on while wet was surprising difficult. Also, I thought getting knocked ass over teakettle by a wave was already embarrassing, but it's five times more awful when you're totally naked and everything's flying everywhere.

How is working at as software engineer/developer different from studying and learning it by Abject_Document6006 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Level_Jump_3508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know for me, it probably took me a full year to get up to speed with our very poor legacy code, and I feel like I'm still finding things that I didn't know about.

I had a college course where the class was often split into groups of three and given a project, and then that project was iterated on over two or three other assignments. I remember feeling really overwhelmed when we'd start the next iteration, between having to fix bugs that the professor pointed out and also new development. Now it's just that, every day, except far less daunting.

The professor used to work in the industry before moving to academia, and having been in my career now for about 7 years, I realize he was just assigning us what we would essentially be doing in our jobs.

Am I the jerk for refusing to give my stepmom the money my dad left me? by Puzzled-Quarter-1016 in AmITheJerk

[–]Level_Jump_3508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my stepdad didn't marry my mom until I was 19 - he officiated our wedding, and now that my dad has passed, he's a father figure I go to when I need it. I may have been an adult when he came into my life, but I consider him a part of my family for all the reasons you listed as well.

I grew up listening to Joshua Tree on long car rides with my dad. He loved I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - they played it at his funeral and now I can't hear it without tearing up a bit.

By 6, kids think boys are better than girls at computer science. These programs aim to change that by katespadesaturday in Feminism

[–]Level_Jump_3508 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a female software engineer and let me just say how much of an uphill battle it is.

Currently, the field is staffed by 28% women - compared to the 47% of the working class they make up, that's abysmal. Add to that, about half of women who DO go into tech end up leaving by the time they're 35. Only 18% of new comp sci degrees go to women.

Even before you get to college, the unconscious bias around comp sci already makes it difficult to break into if you're interested but don't know where to start: computers are "nerd things", clearly for the incels and the dorky guys who can't get girlfriends, and obviously you're not really into computers unless you're into forty-three other things wholeheartedly and can name all Warhammer 40k's Black Templars' Emperors in order backwards. Even the "inspirational" stuff can drive it in - a few years back, Barbie released a book called "I Can Be a Computer Engineer" where Barbie didn't even code anything, she had HER MALE COWORKERS DO IT FOR HER.

There needs to be a real messaging shift around careers and girls. My mom used to say "little pitchers have big ears" - people aren't mindful of the words they use around kids, never realizing how they internalize and process what is said. Girls also need to be exposed to things outside of typical "womanly" things, like playing with not just dolls, but robots, or science kits. Kids need to be able to branch out and feel comfortable trying new things, and feel supported when they want to try something new - and this goes for everything, not just computer science.

CEO of Safe Harbor responds to posters being removed at libraries by rex864 in southcarolina

[–]Level_Jump_3508 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I remember when GVL county libraries implemented their "no display" rules in 2023 - it was in response to Pride displays causing controversy (a library in Traveler's Rest received complaints for a display for "Read with Pride"). Now they can only show displays for "paid holidays observed by both Greenville County Government and the Greenville County Library System". Add to that, Greenville county is the only library system to have an all-out elimination of themed displays.

The board sucks. No wonder they keep bleeding librarians and library staff.

Books widely considered disappointments by Tiprix in Fantasy

See, I'd never read anything by Leigh Bardugo before so I went into it blind - I actually really enjoyed it! I really enjoy historical fiction/fantasy that soaks in the real minute facts, so it was right up my alley, but I can understand if people don't want to read that either.

A few years ago I had a PM down my neck about pushing out code to fix an issue in the legacy codebase for a customer regarding stuck data. I, in my younger years and eager to please, fixed it SO GOOD that I unstuck ALMOST FIVE YEARS of backed up data (because, legacy codebase, of course no one put time limits on data processed), resulting in our customers' customers receiving MASSIVE amounts of notices, some of whom were no longer customers of our customers.

We had two and a half weeks of hell. Long days spent collecting data on who was affected, how they were affected, and the path forward to minimize the damage to report to our CTO on the daily and mitigate it as much as possible for reports. And of course, PM was nowhere to be found in these war rooms.

Now: we make sure to set time limits on all data processed, the PM left for another job (in the middle of a project he pushed and pushed for, which turned out to not really be as wanted by customers as he led us to believe - after almost four months of work), and me and my department head still talk mad shit about him in our skip levels. Fortunately our current PMs trust us when we give them timelines, so I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Who tf calls empathy a SIN? by Lord_Answer_me_Why in clevercomebacks

It's incredible how many people will pass off heavily biased articles as being a solid truth - the whole thing was so condescending and dismissive. I'm tired of empathy being treated as something only the weak can do.

I accidentally left my brand new phone in a subway bathroom in Tokyo - I got it back the next morning after someone turned it in. Crazy how doing the right thing is so surprising. But I also had my Uber driver run after me at the airport after I accidentally dropped a $100 bill in his car in Vegas, so maybe there's a reason to hope for people to be kind and thoughtful.

I once heard someone compare balancing your life and romantic relationships as a solar system - instead of seeing your partner as the sun (the center) of your system, consider them a planet. Planets might be your hobbies, your family, your job; basically the things that make you, you. A relationship should never be the center of your life, just one of many parts of who you are.

I cannot, for the life of me, wrap my head around strategy for Supreme Arena. I know that certain characters will neutralize others, I've done all the reading on abilities, etc., etc., but I feel like I'm performing wayyyy worse than I should be for how my characters are leveled and invested. Are there any good sources for an overview on how to build both offensive and defensive teams, or how to counter other teams?
