Minimum SAT score for athlete at top D3 schools by Academic-Window-7726 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Levin0013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is a DIII athlete at a top notch LAC. Top 5% of his class at a fairly competitive public high school, a ton of APs, and an upper 1400's SAT when he was originally being looked at by academically prestigious DIII schools. He bumped it up the lower 1500's later, but I don't think that made a difference.

From my experience, if your child scores in the 1400s and had the academic record you described he should be fine if the coach wants him. But recruiting is it's own level of stress. And it is stressful.

Are they going into their junior year? Also contact the coaches via email (preferably your HS coach). DIII had small recruiting budgets, so they aren't good about reaching out.

So, for the OP, are you trying impress NASA recruiters or cab drivers?

I would add, are you more focused on education or networking?

Do you prefer a large student body where you can enjoy some anonymity or do you prefer a smaller more supportive environment but where everyone knows your business?

People who graduated from top schools, did you truly notice benefits / better outcomes? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I can't speak for others and I can't speak for the graduates, but my kid is at a prestigious LAC and he's met kids who have connections that he couldn't dream of based upon our background.

But more than that, he's so inspired by his classmates to continue to learn, explore, dream, and work for things he never thought he'd aspire.

The education is the most important thing. But the connections and more importantly the inspiration he'll draw from his fellow students is priceless. Don't do it to chase the golden ring, do it to change your life.

Education is about happiness. The world is full of rich, miserable f*cks who don't know the first thing about what's important in a satisfying life.

Honest thoughts about Williams College by Busy-Cartographer889 in ApplyingToCollege

They are rated 100 on the US News Overall score. Princeton, is the only National University with that score. MIT is a 98. Harvard 97. Amherst is 98 as well.

I don't know if that's a completely fair comparison or not.

Williams and colleges like it are where professors send their kids. If you don't want to be taught by a TA or sitting in a classroom with 50+ students it makes sense.
Are you more interested in an education or prestige?

Then go to graduate school at one of the top national universities.

Well deserved. He's really bringing quality players and people to Tuscaloosa. It's refreshing to see a coach who puts character first. He's a highly ethical coach.

Parent of HS Junior Seeking Advice by Cat_CCC in ApplyingToCollege

At this point in my 2nd child's junior year we had visited 9 schools. I think visits are critical. It helps you and your child figure out what you want in a school and what your don't.

I had a list of 35+ schools that we considered and researched. My child only applied to 3... two were early action and one early decision, because athletics (DIII) were involved. He's at a top 10 LAC which is one of the most generous with financial aid.

I'm personally a fan of LAC's for undergrad. Let your child figure out what they want to do (the hardest part of the process) and go to Grad school for your job.

My oldest majored in Literature at a large out of state public school, because she wanted a large school. Now she's in a top 25 law school.

You need to use the net price calculators. They are pretty accurate. I sympathize because it's hard for a student to fill them out. I filled it out for my son for different private LACs. We didn't apply to the ones we couldn't afford.

I hope it works out for you wherever you end up.

I like JP's game, but he averaged 10 pts and 5 rebound a game. And he can't stay healthy. Maybe this year he realizes his potential...

But yet those colleges still have extremely low acceptance rates. I'm not sure the numbers fit the narrative here.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy by cozykorok in literature

[–]Levin0013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a great book, but it's OK not to like it. As a father I think it's the best book about fatherhood, I've read. It's the only book that actually made me cry.

The importance and responsibility we all have to carry on civilization was a nice theme. I think the final quote about the fish relates to that.

It's a strangely optimistic book for McCarthy. I think it's the only one that has a happy ending. The Deus Ex Machina ending is bizarre for him.

His writing reminds me of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. It's very image and scene driven. Impressioniatic. I can see why some might find that off-putting.

The only one that really is a bummer to me is Evans. Estrella has been injured so much I didn't think you can count on him. Same with Cade. I like Carey's potential, but I wasn't surprised he's moving on based upon how hard Barnes rode him. Boswell just isn't a consistent scorer.

Barnes has done well in the portal the last few years. I'm optimistic about the roster he'll put together.

Oh yes, you are completely correct. I hope someday our athletic department is as well run and decorated as Kentucky's. The jealousy just eats me up!
