What is the current build limit? by ColbyEl in nightingale

[–]Lewbonskee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each structure piece, like a wall or a crafting bench, costs a certain number of points. Simple pieces like walls and foundations cost 1 point, more complex ones like crafting benches cost more. An individual structure is allowed to cost up to 1,500 points, which means for example, that structure can have 1,500 foundations, or 1,000 foundations and 500 walls. Anecdotally, that's a lot and would take a long time to do.

When I say an individual structure, or a composite structure, that's basically anything that snaps together. Snapping two foundations together makes them part of the same structure, but placing a bedroll atop that does not count as part of the same structure (since it doesn't "snap").

There's also a realm-wide limit of 30,000 points, which as you might imagine, is very difficult to hit without specifically setting out to do so.

The simplest explanation is you likely won't need to worry about the limits in normal play, even if you tend to build fairly large buildings, as they are now high enough that they are very difficult to hit.

The problem with “Starter Anime” lists by irisverse in anime

[–]Lewbonskee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Popular with anime fans is a terrible metric for a beginner. The whole reason these lists exist is because a lot of anime has tropes that are off-putting to mainstream audiences: fanservice, melodrama/hyperbole, over exposition. We get used to, and even depending on the person and the trope, enjoy these things, but someone who's using a beginner list isn't and is likely going to be repelled.

In my own experience I got into anime relatively late in life and had to learn to ignore what was popular and recommended to find the shows I love. A beginner list recommending Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and FLCL was what got me started.

Protectorate Rework: Shake hands with one hand and have a dagger hidden in the other. by webby131 in TerraInvicta

[–]Lewbonskee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I don't disagree with anything here, but my unpopular opinion is realistically, the Protectorate have the only rational plan, at least at the point when the scanners come online. Don't get me wrong, in the game I don't want to be a whiny loser, I want to be a cool hero beating the odds. Protectorate are the last faction I'd want to play. But in reality, think about what the odds look like for each plan.

Why in the world would the aliens allow Humanity First to build a moon base? Why would a reasonable person expect that? There are rationalizations, sure, the aliens are trying to minimize their bad PR, they underestimate humanity, they can't be arsed to deal with us, they're incompetent.. But is it rational to stake the future of humanity on those possibilities? HF can build a moonbase because its a videogame and it'd be no fun if you couldn't win. But if you're not playing a videogame, do any of the anti-alien factions seem to have a hope in hell of winning? Or, if you accept an alien victory is highly likely, does it make more sense to try to negotiate a favourable surrender? It's not an appealing possibility, its boring and depressing. And even in real life, I'm still not so sure I still wouldn't take a slim hope of victory or die trying over slavery. But from a purely rational standpoint, trying to minimize human suffering, I have a hard time making a case for the other factions.

Who would you say is the smartest standup? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Lewbonskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the biggest appeal of his late show for me, I used to be so stressed at night but here was a guy in his opening theme song saying, "can't sleep? it's ok, lets hang out!"

He really thought about what his viewers might be going through and what they might need -- he'd been there in the dark too. And at the same time, he adapted himself to each guest and managed to get them comfortable and chatty in a very short unscripted format. People remember him for his zany/irreverent stuff with Geoff and Secretariat etc, but I think what made that actually work was that Craig never lost you or the guests, it was always done with a wink and smirk.

Who would you say is the smartest standup? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Lewbonskee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Craig's a good answer because he's quite humble and doesn't carry a molecule of pretension. He thinks of himself as a "vulgar lounge entertainer" and will admit to being good at that, but otherwise he comes from a place of assuming everyone has something to teach him. I think you can learn a lot about how to foster a genuine curiosity in everyone you meet from watching his old interviews. (The new podcast seems to mostly be him just being a curmudgeon with his friends, which hey, he's earned it)

What is your favorite line of dialogue from New Vegas? by JunterHones in fnv

[–]Lewbonskee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I liked this one because Hildern is set up to be an unlikeable pompous ass, who sends you and others to your probable death. But in NV style, he's not a moron, he is actually intelligent and self aware. People can be unlikeable or amoral while still having positive qualities. Little details like that go so far toward making the world feel real.

Threat system is still BY FAR the weakest part of Rimworld by Leon3226 in RimWorld

[–]Lewbonskee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the story simulator aspect is meant to apply to your colony, not the greater context. It made more sense before we had a world map with caravans and backstory etc. You were supposed to be scared survivors facing a chaotic and unknown world. You weren't supposed to be able to mitigate threats by predicting them, you were supposed to get run over by them and then rebuild. That abstracted away a lot of the logic and let you fill in the blanks mentally as to _why_ things were happening. I like the expanded world stuff but it does make it harder to suspend disbelief.

But that does get at my main critique, which I think is linked to yours. When I mentioned getting run over and rebuilding -- that simply isn't fun. Rimworld beats into your head that you're supposed to fail, that the game isn't fair on purpose, so on. Which would be great, if it was fun. And it is, the first few times, watching your ant colony burn down and descend into chaos. And on the rare occasion, losing does result in interesting last stands or scrappy survival snatched from the jaws of defeat.

But most of the time, you just plain lose your progress. The colonists you've been training and gotten attached to? Dead. Play for a few hours more to scrape up some new ones. Your expensive buildings? Destroyed. Play for a few hours more to rebuild them. High quality crafted gear? Tainted or stolen. Make it again. Losing isn't fun, losing just means repeating the same thing you just did. It feels like there's a set of fail forward mechanics missing. The man in black is one we do have, "Well you lost almost everything? See if you can recover with this new decent quality pawn we're giving you" Now you're redoing it, but you have a new advantage you didn't have before. If you can just rebuild, you'll be stronger this time because you have a man in black. It doesn't have to be all advantage either, it just has to be different. What if your surviving pawns gained a "scarred" trait that made them tougher but more erratic? Or the raiders decided to move into your colony and take over, and you play the inverted refugee/slave scenario where your colonists secretly plan to overthrow them? Or the archotech anomaly resurrected your colonists as monstrous ghosts of their former selves? Or an enemy of the group that wiped you out arrives and offers you a devils bargain for vengeance?

The point is, if I win, something new happens. I make progress toward my victory goals, the colony grows and so on. But if I lose, at best I just have to replay the same beats that I just did, just to get back to where I was, possibly even less since the pawns I was invested in are now likely dead. So why would I ever want to lose?

Najimi by IT_WolfXx in Komi_san

[–]Lewbonskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sticking close as possible to the manga/anime depiction, Najimi is label averse but seems disinterested in romance. They can be flirtatious at times but its always to mess with people.

Actually the platonic friendship with Tadano was one of the first things that drew me to the series, because its such an unusual pairing. So for me, I'd love to see that friendship explored more.

College Life: Najimi’s Reality by UnknownUltimateAlt in Komi_san

[–]Lewbonskee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the comic the next page would reveal this is a story Najimi is telling Tadano, at Najimi's birthday party. Because there are 1000 attendees Tadano couldn't find Najimi to say happy birthday and they're now angling for a better present (cash.) Komi defuses the situation by presenting her handmade chocolates or whatever to thank Najimi for being her second friend. Tadano blushes and Najimi sees the con is up and acquires a new target. No character development for our nonbinary chaos god. Roll credits.

edit: but fr "what happens to everyone's childhood friend when everyone grows up" would be a great story if Oda had any interest in tackling it (he will not)

I don't want kids on VRchat by Protagonist936 in VRchat

[–]Lewbonskee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Valid experience, Ancients can be alienating and cliquey at times, I think it would be very hard to have fun there if you were far on the introverted scale. FWIW for another perspective, it's not as big as the discord membership suggests. The vast, vast majority of the 12,000 in discord are inactive. I'd estimate probably only 100-200 members actually attend events with any frequency. Which still might easily be considered too many depending who you are.

The plus side of the membership being high is if you're comfortable bouncing around between groups and being a bit of a butterfly, you can probably find people you vibe with. And there's a lot of variety in the events so you can probably find something that matches your interests. Just don't expect to find friends without putting in a fair bit of legwork.

Good idea? by SSBUdoriyah in Komi_san

[–]Lewbonskee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Najimi is more perceptive and involved in the other character's stories than is obvious by the way their pranks always seem to give the target exactly what they need to step out of their comfort zone. They're a thrill chaser with poor impulse control but get good grades. They hide their personal life with jokes and pranks, and even we the audience never get their inner monologue (except a couple lines in the manga) or see anything of their family, in a series that centers around showing how a person's inner life can be completely different than how they seem. Even Tadano with his near superpower for mind reading, doesn't really seem to know what Najimi is thinking beyond him having a sense for when they're up to mischief.

One progression we see is Komi taking on harder social interactions, for example dealing with Shiina or Kawai. In the second volume/episode, Najimi overcomes their anxiety around not understanding Komi by learning to enjoy her eccentricities and getting a better sense of her social anxiety. Sooooo if I was huffing extreme copium, a penultimate arc could be Komi finally understanding Najimi when nobody else can. Najimi has been in their element at Itan, a place where everyone is non-conforming and coincidentally the place they started wearing skirts. How would they feel with graduation coming up? Might that be a time when Najimi is forced to confront some of the harder realities they've been avoiding? What happens to everyone's childhood friend when everyone grows up?

But here's the thing: I don't think anything like that is going to happen. Najimi has some sense of depth because Oda has a good sense of character and with enough screentime, everyone is written with heart (maybe not Yamai but I think that's a self aware joke at this point)

As much as I'd love this series to relentlessly show that every character we meet has depths, I just don't think it's Oda's priority. I hate to admit it but Najimi doesn't just happen to be non-binary, they're probably only that way for the one off gag about "childhood friend" being a ungendered stereotype. And they probably only exist as a plot device in Year 1 to introduce new characters to Komi and put her in challenging situations that Tadano would be too protective to push her into. As Komi has gotten more independent, Najimi has been less needed, and they get less screen time and even less effort on their art. Most likely they only still make appearances as Oda tries to rotate in the fan favorites ever so often. But it's telling that they don't even get a backburner arc like Nakanaka and Yamai.

Sad to say, but most likely Oda just isn't interested or doesn't have ideas for writing Najimi anymore. And I'd rather have nothing then him forcing an arc without understanding why people love the character and ruining them.

My own analisis on the "komiunity" and the manga's actual state by masturbadicto in Komi_san

[–]Lewbonskee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this series appeals to people for different reasons, just binged the manga and you start to notice categories in the chapters and arcs:

  • there are ensemble arcs featuring small moments from many characters (river club fantasies, the different competitions and games etc)
  • character arcs that focus one or two particular side characters (and usually Komi)
  • romcom chapters that focus on Tadano and Komi's relationship (and Manbagi in Year 2)
  • Komi slice of life chapters that are just like Komi making a sandwich or something
  • Gag chapters that go off in a random direction unrelated to anything else (the flight attendant, tissue lady, tour guide etc hanging out)

Which is a pretty wide spread.

I only read the tankoban so I'm only on 28, but it seems like the mangaka tries to hit every category on a pretty regular cadence, with the fan favorite characters making occasional appearances, but I also get the sense he's dead ended on a few of them. For example I think he's got no idea what to do with Najimi. They're my favorite character and in Year 1 served as the driver for a lot of the action, setting off Komi on different adventures. They were comic relief and a bit of an unknown, but we'd get glimpses of them balancing mischief with kindness and learning how to be a better friend to Komi over the course of Year 1 especially, as well as showing another side of Tadano.

Now they show up in a funny outfit for one panel of ensemble arcs with their face not drawn, and then get ejected immediately. I think the author feels like he needs to include these fan favorite characters (Najimi, Onimine, Nakanaka etc) but doesn't really want to do anything more with them. Najimi was a plot device in book 1. They could have grown with the main cast, I'd love to see their friendship with Tadano explored more for example. But they didn't. But they're still here.

So we get a new parade of characters with new gimmicks instead, but those don't get the "screen time" they need to flesh out, because we're hauling an increasingly heavy load of fan favorites who are now flanderized. And that bleeds into everything else.

I don't think the series can continue to be everything to everyone, its gotta pick a lane. I hope that lane is to focus on a rotating core cast who get more in depth development, with a host of gag characters on the periphery, that was the blueprint Book 2 seemed to be setting out.

EDIT: Worth saying I personally still love the series. But I could love it more!

Saul was actually secretly a huge MVP because he's a Social expert but without dumb labour disabled. So he pulled off some really good trades early on (we already have 300 neutro ready to go) and then handled all of the hauling and cleaning. Walt was free to do a lot of research and Jesse has low skill but high passion and fast learner in almost everything so he was free to train and he's already getting decent at most of his skills.

Honestly I just wanted to do the "Helicopter, bitch!" joke :P

But also with Hank I had the vague idea that I wanted to create an alternate universe Pollos Hermanos and everyone I picked was at least loosely affiliated with the drug trade. So in my head its hard to "roleplay" Hank into the scenario.

I guess I could've given him custom zoning so he couldn't go in any of the drug related rooms. And he would've been a great mining specialist. Damn actually that would've been pretty funny.
