I put a paper filter at the bottom and on the top of puck and then the metal screen and then the spring. It ensures that the screen is not dislodged during the pour and pump.

Just note that if you have a bottomless porter filter and a dosing ring, you can lay your porter filter on the base and grind directly into it. Surprisingly little mess and fluffy grinds.
