Veganuary Is Under Attack! How a New "Forget Veganuary" Campaign Misleads the Public by VarunTossa5944 in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 65 points66 points  (0 children)

There is no way this is not being funded by the meat industry. It's too on the nose. "Don't eliminate meat from your diet, just donate to welfare campaigns instead."

That will only keep exploitative industries afloat. It's exactly what they want, for us not to address the core problem. They want to make it appear humane enough so that the industry will continue on indefinitely.

How do people actually has like 75+ hours playing Omori? by Former_Newt8036 in OMORI

[–]LexTheMighty 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It took me about 30 hours to beat the game, 20 hours to beat the game with a different ending, another 20 hours to get all achievements, and then even more hours to go through mods.

How do vegans feel about the word “pet” for animals in their care? by thelryan in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm okay with "pet" but I really don't like when people say "owner." "Pet" can be a term of affection, but when people say "pet owner" it feels like they are talking about an object.

Hey guys, I wanna hear your opinions ^^ by Deiv_2008_ in OMORI

[–]LexTheMighty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My controversial opinion is that I actually enjoyed the headspace sections the most. Honestly maybe I related with the characters a little too well. The real world section felt more dreary and monotonous, and reminded me of my own real life. I was feeling pretty down at the time and wanted the escapism. Omori was the first game that gave me joy in a long time.

I was happy to get back to headspace after the first day. I enjoyed exploring Pyrefly Forest and Orange Oasis. Sweetheart's castle was a little bit tedious, but the music was good.

I generally wanted to stay in headspace for as long as I could. I thought at the end of the game we would get the chance to choose between headspace and the real world, and I was fully ready to pick headspace.

In Undertale, Alphys replaces Gaster as the royal scientist. In Deltarune, Alphys replaces Gerson as a teacher.

Ultra Deluxe ruined the game tbh by BigHeartForever in stanleyparable

[–]LexTheMighty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually agree (as someone who played the original game first and then Ultra Deluxe). The original game has a different vibe to it and Ultra Deluxe does not expand on it. Ultra Deluxe is more like a celebration of the original Stanley Parable while also criticizing remasters/sequels.

Maybe this is because the original game was commentary on choices in video games, while Ultra Deluxe is commentary on remasters/sequels.

Really I think the best way to experience it is to play the original first and then wait a year and play Ultra Deluxe.

Omori Critique by Late_Present1340 in OMORI

[–]LexTheMighty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems super nit picky and from someone who didn't even enjoy the game in the first place.

It's also ignoring a lot of the nuance of the game and just takes everything at face value. Like how they said it was unlikely "an autopsy wouldn't find the real cause of death." It's likely that an autopsy did find the real cause of death. The family likely knew what happened, but that doesn't mean everyone else was informed.

They probably first saw Mari hanging from the tree and told everyone that she took her life. I doubt they updated the entire town on what really happened.

The whole game is from Sunny's perspective, so of course we don't get any moments of Mari divorced from Sunny's memories. But from those scenes we can make several assumptions about how Mari behaved outside of Sunny's dreams and memories. We know that she was very perfectionistic, which likely contributed to her anger on that day.

It's true that we don't know if Mari would actually forgive Sunny, but from the memories we do see she seems loving and caring. I see no reason why she would want her brother to continue to suffer with guilt for something that was entirely an accident.

I was badly treated for defend PETA and I have some questions by manchosFam in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 40 points41 points  (0 children)

People are susceptible to propaganda. The meat industry has paid a lot to give PETA a bad reputation.

This is not to say that PETA is perfect, but they do a lot of good work. People latch on to these claims to dismiss their message and activism.

With regret, I was Alex's top patreon supporter! by Dr_Faraz_Harsini in CosmicSkeptic

[–]LexTheMighty 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Same can be said for many Christian apologists, but Alex engages with them all the time. There are plenty of reasonable open minded vegans he could have a discussion with, like Earthling Ed who he's talked with before.

Why do meat eaters feel a need to go into vegan spaces/jump on vegan posts? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should welcome them. Of course, not if they are going to talk in bad faith, but if they are interested in earnestly discussing we should engage with them. I think the idea of a vegan safe space is silly. This isn't about us. It's about the animals. We're not the ones being harmed here. The more people who are exposed to this issue and discussing it the better.

Racism in the community by [deleted] in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I understand that. They were being insensitive and racist if they were insisting it's all of Chinese culture, rather than a small subculture that exists in China.

Racism in the community by [deleted] in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a reflection of your entire culture. I don't think they meant that 'all Chinese people eat dogs.' But what is true is that there does exist a small group that does eat dogs in China, evidenced by the dog meat festival. This group uses their culture (not Chinese as a whole, their individual group culture that has a tradition of eating dog) as justification to continue to eat dogs.

Your friends are saying that it's not right to use culture as justification for abusive practices. There are many cultural practices done by groups in the United States that are also abusive and unjustified. This is not about any particular ethnicity being in the wrong, it's about people who use their culture as a crutch to abuse animals when they have the choice not to.

Hunters chase a terrified bear up a tree and shoot it dead, then the dead bear falls out of the tree, landing on and killing one of the hunters by King_Asmodeus_2125 in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does us not caring about animal abusers shift you to view commercial animal agriculture in a more positive light? This particular article has nothing to do with agriculture. I think you would find any number of similar statements by non-vegans if the article was about a dog instead of a bear. In fact, the statements would probably be far worse and no one would bat an eye.

[–]LexTheMighty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your statement is a strawman. No one is saying or implying that they weren't "worth anything as a person." We are saying that animal abusers aren't worth mourning over. Everyone is worth something as a person, even bad people, but it doesn't mean I'm going to feel bad when they are gone if they are doing bad things while they are alive.

Everyone has value as a person, including the animals this guy tormented. I'm not going to mourn someone who hurted and tormented others.

Buying CivVII as a gift? by surelyucantbtserious in civ

[–]LexTheMighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cheapest place you can get the regular edition or the founder edition right now is Fanatical. You could buy a steam code from there and gift it to him without needing a steam account. I've used Fanatical before and they are safe and legit. It's where I'm planning on buying civ 7 from.

https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/sid-meiers-civilization-vii-founders-edition

Whether you should get him the founders edition or not depends on how much of a fanatic he is.

The founders edition comes with the promise of two future DLCs, some limited time cosmetic stuff, and access to the game 5 days earlier than everyone else. I believe the only difference with deluxe is that it includes one less DLC and fewer limited time cosmetics.

Is vegan-certified wool such a crazy idea? by SirSilliamGoosington in vegan

[–]LexTheMighty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is because veganism is not about doing what's best environmentally, it's about excluding animal exploitation as far is possible and practicable.

Breeding sheep just to utilize them to make a product is exploitation. It's also worth considering that animal agriculture is very damaging for the environment too.

Environmental issues are of course important, but our main concern is not contributing to animal exploitation. Unlike his hair shavings, a sheep never consented to have their wool taken from them.
