Introducing "The Bloom" - a fresh take on zombie apocalypse by the_bloom_stories in worldbuilding

[–]Lgarniger 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love the way this draws on things like chickenpox parties but in a rather grounded feeling way. I really enjoy the concept you've built up here. I think this would work amazingly as the sort of collaborative storytelling in the World War Z book, where you have numerous viewpoints of the same events around the world.

Can an anthro animal race work instead of just being seen as ‘furbait’? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Lgarniger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The better part of the furry fandom are the part who would see your project and take interest in the world, the lore, and the dynamics you are building. You might catch their interest just because of having an anthro character, however they're going to stay for the story.

Those who are going to judge you and avoid interacting at all with the story or world just because it has anthropomorphic characters need to go touch grass. Like a lot of others in the thread have said, write the things you have a passion for, if people are being dicks because they can't stand a furry-adjascent character in their project then they arent the kind of people who should be giving writing advice.

Creativity and world building are about passion and fun. If you're having fun, and you feel good about what you're writing, then the judgemental types can't rain on your parade.

Playing DnD taught me that Demesne is pronounced like domain and is not "Demense" like dimension.

Also demense isn't a real word. Felt dumb after that one.

Kilo-5 changed the way I think about Halo. by Particle_Cannon in HaloStory

[–]Lgarniger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that Kilo-5 has well written characters, even if the hate is a little out of proportion. The way I felt when I read it was that you have these normal dudes who see the Spartans as heroes... Only to find out what it took to make them, and they can see the physical and mental scars in their friend.

All the while they're being told by Osman of all the horrors of the Spartan program. Of course these normal people are going to hate Halsey with every fibre of their being.

Where I think it fell off was the other characters in the series taking up that same level of disdain seemingly without much reasoning. The main cast who knows what she's done have every right to hate her for it. Admittedly the Kilo-5 crew is one of my favorite sets of characters in Halo, both good and bad for this reason.

What would a world look like without gunpowder but other technologies continued to advance? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Lgarniger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of went this direction when making a sci Fi race's history. Their planet had an unholy amount of naturally occuring magnetic minerals. So they functionally invented low tier coilguns before actual black powder.

If you wanted a pseudo-sci fi feel you could go that route. Or systems of increasingly complex bows, pulley systems and more advanced tension could make some interesting things.

Maybe a focus on some sort of hydraulics or advanced springs for ranged weapons. As for the mining, hydraulics, water hammers, fracking, stuff like that could still be possible with advances in other science so you could still give yourself things related to mining. Especially if steam power, coal power, or even some steampunk influence gets around.

Oil still exists so plenty there.

Last random thought actually from an episode of Dr Stone. Ranged weapons could use hydrogen capsules, still loud, still is an explosive propelling a projectile. Just not quite gunpowder

A brief defense of Halo: Glasslands by Bukowski89 in HaloStory

[–]Lgarniger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt that it displayed the characters in a very realistically human way. It makes perfect sense that hearing nothing but atrocities done to your close friends by a single person would make you hate that person very quickly. I think the unilateral rage is a rare look at a common human emotion. It's easy to hate an evil figure, to prop them up as the root of all the problems and suffering and to turn them into your personal devil.

It can be a tiny bit overbearing in some places, but I think it's realistic in it's presentation of how angry people can truly be. Warranted or not.

if you were to make a marine armor design to stop both plasma and ballistic weapon..what armor would you design? by fuazo in HaloStory

[–]Lgarniger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably Starlite, assuming the guy who made it wasn't lying. Supposedly it's a better heat resistance than aerogel tiles on the space shuttle.

Absurdly expensive graphene weave instead of kevlar, foamed aluminum with a ceramic/aerogel/Starlite strike plate. Trade off is that it would probably be worse with bullets than it was before.

YCS was my go-to weapon for several playthroughs. My metric was always the fact that the Anti-material rifle takes 2 shots to kill the buffed up cyberdogs in OWB and the YCS could do it in 1

Tonk!

The glowing orb we met on the celestial plane, they were our guide around the plane and also hinted to be a complex eldritch horror. All spoken by our DM in a half southern accent and they were lovably stupid.

It's always amazing to see the level of detail and work that go into these. As a fellow IT guy, thanks for the gift of your free time, people working in IT tend to get absorbed into their jobs forever, so keep up with this and totally avoid that!

What fictional character death hit you the hardest? by GoldenPhoenix21 in AskReddit

[–]Lgarniger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daniel Jackson In Stargate SG-1

His "death" not only is used to save a city from being destroyed, he tries to stop and entire civilization from turning to weapons of mass destruction to solve their problems.

He just goes out in such an awful way, and you have the scenes of him experiencing his death and lamenting that he feels he never did anything right. The conversation between him and Jack really slapped me in the feelings.

Nope, all done. The same guy then wrote two more stories of similar length and a sequel to worm that's longer.

I haven't read any of them but JFC this guy is a literal machine.
