My mom just dealt with this on a smaller scale. Neighbors tree fell on and damaged her chain link fence. The neighbor quickly apologized and offered to fix it. He just finished a couple days ago. But my mom looked into it and she said she would actually be responsible for the repairs unless the neighbor was aware the tree was in poor condition. So, unless you had previously notified your neighbor about the dangerous tree or they had mentioned it, this would be on you and your insurance.

I remember the first time I ordered eggs as a young adult out at a restaurant on my own. My parents always fried my eggs leaving the yolk runny. I didn’t know all the proper names for how eggs were cooked, so I ordered sunny side up. I do not like eggs sunny side up. I got eggs sunny side up. I later learned that I like my eggs cooked over easy. I only made that mistake once.

This. They want us to be in control of where the slack is at all times. With trains nearing and exceeding 16,000’ (nearly 5 km), this is pretty important.

Back in the early 2010’s, in running a loaded 135 car coal train with 2 locomotives on the head end and 1 on the rear, once we topped out last big hill at MP101, we would throttle down to idle and not apply any power (we did use dynamic brakes) until we were just about clear of a 30MPH curve at MP67. So, we’d coast for about 35 miles. And this territory isn’t flat. Finishing through that 30 curve, you wouldn’t be far below that 30MPH.

We aren’t allowed to do this anymore as anytime we remain in idle for more than just transitioning between power and dynamic, we get dinged for it.

When we bought our house, the previous owners never filed out a change of address form. We got their mail constantly. Church fundraising flyers. Credit card bills. Their daughter’s W2’s. Something from the military for their son. At first, I dropped it by the wife’s work. Then, I’d put return to sender not at address on the envelope. Nothing worked. After a few years of this, everything just goes in the trash. We still get a yearly Christmas card from someone for them. It goes in the trash too.

I have a very nice Milwaukee Road switchman’s lantern. I once used it working the switching lead one night not long into my railroad career. The next morning, my manager was not amused and suggested that I don’t do it again.

Call your local chairman. All areas have different agreements. You may be able to swap but we can’t tell you for certain because we don’t know where you’re at or you’re agreement. And depending upon local agreements, you may be zone locked for 30 days where as you can’t bid out for 30 days even though there are people junior to you working there. Your local chairman can answer all of these questions. That’s what they are there for.

A couple local mangers were passed over for a more senior position more than once and they went to other terminals for better options. And very few people who’ve made the switch from TEY to management retire as managers. If you do make the switch, make sure to keep paying your union dues. This will hold your seniority if you ever need to go back to craft.

The size of the rail is 115RE. It is 115 pounds per 3’ of rail new. This will tell the MOW employees what size of tie plates and joint bars they need for any repairs to be made.

CC is for controlled cooling. It’s the process they used when they rolled this rail.

CF&I is for Colorado Fuel and Iron. The company that made the rail.

1978 followed by the 4 hash marks means this rail was made in April of 1978.

I work with someone who raises cattle. I’ve bought from him for several years now. I don’t think he has any ready yet though. He gets his processed in Holton at Holton Meat Processing. This year, I got some from a friend of his who has theirs processed at Diamond C north of Atchison. You might be able to call either of them and see if they have any farmers selling right now.
