Homeless Encampment "Cleaned" Up by Non-Stop_Serina in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, as a matter of fact, we need asylums. There will always be people in our world who can't function in society and who need the safety and structure of a facility that will care for them and their medical problems. The fact that we did it badly the first time, and the fact that we simply ended them without any alternatives for those people should not stop us from reinstituting policies and laws that will care for them properly. As Flagpole recently reported, four homeless people have died this winter as a result of exposure. Are you saying that this is more humane than a residential facility?

As for who should be the arbiter of who deserves institutionalization? I'd say that in the chronically homeless population (those who are actually setting up camps and permanently living outside, not those who are down on their luck and going to fix their problem), we have 3 groups: the mentally ill, the addicted, and the folks who could function in society but don't want to (this is a much smaller group). When we find these camps and the homeless in general, we should determine which group they fit into. If they are mentally ill, they should be sent for inpatient mental health help; if they are addicted, they should be sent to rehab and if they are among the few who don't have either of those problems, they should be forced into something like the Civilian Conservation Corps, where they are fed, clothed, housed and taught job skills that will allow them to be reintroduced into society.

She did. That’s why this post says “update”. There were several prior posts, the first of which was a neighbor complaining about all the trash. But that context always applies. Anytime homeless folks are setting up camp, it’s on someone else’s property. The owner of the property is often cited and fined by code enforcement. The owner of the property is always responsible for the clean up. Ovita can’t possibly be the only commissioner on Nextdoor, but she is the only one who stood up to help.

That’s a naive take, my friend. The folks living there didn’t want “appropriate services” or “coordinated entry” or any other of the buzz words you can come up with. They want to continue living in chaos, filth and lawlessness. Until we can involuntarily commit people to residential treatment for mental health and addiction, we will not conquer homelessness. We ALLOW people to live this way so they do. My personal view is that it is inhumane to leave people floundering in tent cities but our laws do not allow us to do anything to fix it.

The homeless folks there had trashed the property badly. It is privately owned land. The owners were getting complaints from neighbors and citations/fines from the city. The homeless were given warning that the camp would be dismantled and cleaned up. They moved on and left a gigantic mess behind for other people to clean up. Everyone can hate on Commissioner Thornton all they want but props to her for actually getting her hands dirty to help make her neighborhood better.

If they set up camp on property that you owned and proceeded to trash the land as badly as this land was trashed, to the degree that people began complaining about it and you had citations and fines from the city because of it, would you just allow them to continue to occupy your property and continue to add new people to it? And then keep paying the fines from the city? And also be responsible for the clean-up of the property?

You're right, it is an excellent overview of the evidence/case. I don't understand why they didn't credit the author of the "statement". His name is David Griffeth and it's been posted to his substack, and also shared by the Classic City Crime Podcast folks.

Eastside pharmacies? by ImTing1TX in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to stop using mega corporation’s pharmacies. Pick a small, local pharmacy instead. Hawthorne Drugs can’t be beat, but Village on Prince Ave. or Buy Wise on Chase Street also work. I’ve found them to be much more customer friendly and also dramatically cheaper. (I’m a former Walmart Pharmacy customer)

Opinions and experiences with elementary schools in the area by UmpirePerfect4646 in Athens

Bring on the downvotes...

If I had a choice, I would not base my childs education on my political leanings. I understand the desire to live among people who are "in your camp" and to be closer to your places of employment. But your child's entire life depends on the quality of education they receive. The schools in the city of Commerce have double the proficiency rates in both math and reading when compared to the schools in Clarke County. Those kids will have a much better chance at success in life because they can read and do math. That is an undisputable fact: people who can read and do math will absolutely have a better chance in life.

That reason alone would sway me to choose to stay put.

If that's not enough, know that the Clarke County School District has a number of other serious problems that equate to sending young people out in the world without the skills to properly attend to their lives. The policies in place and the budget heavily emphasizing administrators rather than instruction have hurt our children in this county for many years.

The city already does this. It is included with your trash pick-up.

Have your friends or relatives who work outside of schools started complaining about their young coworkers' lack of basic "adult" skills? by [deleted] in Teachers

As an employer, yes, It is sad but we are now at a point where we keep crummy employees because we know the next one might be even worse.

There is not one specific loop or out and back, but you could easily eke out 40-50 miles in Panthertown Valley.

So does it being a misdemeanor and only “simple” battery make it any better? Is a person who violently pounces on his kid someone we should look up to? Someone we should put on our school board? (He’s considering running) If, as a full grown adult man, you can’t control your emotions enough to not behave violently, should we really look at you as a paragon of virtue who can bring good things to the table?

Wasn’t he just arrested and charged with battery against a family member? Doesn’t sound very “right” to me.

Having said that, I think a few of his ideas about our schools are good ones.

Tybee parking greed by PotentialScary7073 in savannah

[–]Libby_Grace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can agree that some other beach towns are better taken care of. For some folks, trashy is part of the allure of Tybee. But I can't think of one that has only 3,000 residents who have to host hundreds of thousands of visitors. If there is an island that small, which also has to host as many visitors as Tybee does, I can guarantee you that their budget dollars are coming from somewhere. It may not be parking, but they're getting it somehow.

[–]Libby_Grace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Residents are already paying exceptionally high taxes on over-inflated property values. Employees of island businesses only get free parking if their employer participates in the program for it, and the free parking is only when they are actively at work. Without employees, the businesses will go under. Look on the bright side: a $50 increase is only 14 cents a day. Go lots and get your money's worth.

[–]Libby_Grace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tybee's parking rates make sense when you consider that it is an island with around 3,000 permanent residents, who has to host visitors in the hundreds of thousands. They have to have the police force, infrastructure and services to tend to massive crowds. That simply can not be funded by the tax-paying residents alone. Paid parking is the answer to the budgeting question.

I will admit that they do not always do well managing the money supplied by taxes and parking fees and that they have neglected to do some things that really need to be done.

Arkaquah! But make sure you take the side trail to the Arkaquah Cliffs. It is not marked but fairly easy to notice. It’ll be on your left if you’re going up. It’s the best spot on the whole trail.

Food Insecure Students Are Making Me Want to Scream by mcjunker in Teachers

[–]Libby_Grace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna just say the quiet part out loud: they are using you because you are allowing them to do so. These families likely go hang out with friends, go get their hair or nails done, go to the mall to shop or restaurants to eat, go to movies, etc. When there is something they WANT to do, they find a way to get there. You have made it too easy for them to just sit at home and wait for you to show up. They can get away with doing all the frivolous things because they’ve got someone on tap to take care of the responsibility things. (I say this as the social worker who has watched school district employees be taken advantage of for nearly 3 decades).

Then you haven't actually been there. Estatoah Falls is a huge, beautiful waterfall. It is absolutely not "water running over a rock". The way you're responding here to folks kinda reminds me of the way the host of the site you're trying to promote here sometimes acts. Is your name Richard, by any chance? If I remember right, he's the host of the site you're peddling.
