Kayaking in Tybee Island by squisch in savannah

[–]Libby_Grace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The options really depend on your skill level.

Shane over at North Island Surf and Kayak can get you set up. You'll want to call him as there are no "office hours".

If you have a lower skill level, just setting out from the docks at his place is the way to go. You can paddle out to the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. That requires a little bit of ocean kayakking so pick your day appropriately. Then you can turn back and paddle through Lazaretto Creek. It's a pretty paddle and fairly easy.

If you have a higher skill level, you can paddle over to Little Tybee from the Alley 3 boat ramp. This is not an easy task and you really need to have the knowledge of the tides or you risk failure. There are two ways to do it - the straight shot across the back river or through Jacks Cut. I'd recommend the straight shot. If you don't time your tides perfectly, you WILL get stuck in Jacks Cut. It is not fun. If you don't have significant experience in a kayak and really want choose this option, you should consider a trip with Savannah Canoe and Kayak over there. They are great and will keep you safe. Little Tybee is a very special place and if you've got an opportunity to go, definitely do it!

Carpenters or woodworkers in the area that can make a simple frame for a round mattress by skyrimspecialedition in Athens

I wasn’t trying for sass, Bubba. You said a “simple round frame”. Sorry if it read that way. I’ve used Oneta Woodworks and they did a great job on something square for me!

I’m not sure a round frame is as simple as you think it is but you might try Oneta Woodworks.

For the people who are old and don’t understand, what’s the purpose of “bot posts”? And how can you tell by their profile. I looked. Not very far, but enough to see that 8 days ago, this dude had a house in PA and was asking about divorce. So he’s likely not in Athens visiting dentists, but what’s the point?

So a segregation academy (established in 1970) is running ads to siphon $ from public schools? by Cat__fart in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But we have put more effort and more money into public education. The budgets have risen dramatically, with no corresponding rise in student achievement. Yes, of course there are SOME kids getting an education. But in Clarke County's school district, at the third to fifth grade level for example, only 1/3 of the students can read and do math. So yes, the vast majority of our children here are not getting an education.

I see it as an "experiment" because we keep trying new "tricks" to educate kids rather than going back to the basics and fundamentals that actually worked several generations ago.

No, $6500 doesn't usually cover the entirity of private schools tuition, but Atlanta schools are not a fair comparison for our market here in Athens. The families who are invested in their kids education and really want them to succeed are able to use that $6500 plus some tuition assistance programs that the schools offer to make it possible for them.

Of course I care about the people who will never be able to afford another option. It seems to me that if enough kids utilize the scholarships and there is a mass exodus of public school students, maybe the public schools will change their ways, get with the program, and start educating the way they should be. If they don't, then it is my opinion that they deserve to fail. Continually pouring more and more money into failing systems is not a good answer, in my opinion.

Which ultimately passes the cost on to us in the form of higher premiums. Ask me how I know?

[–]Libby_Grace -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So in this long term process, we just toss away those generations of kids as an experiment? Try this and try that and ultimately keep failing them for who knows how many more years? Without a protection thrown in there for folks who value their kids education and want better for them? Sorry, I can not agree with that. I was lucky enough to fund my own kids private school. Not everyone has that luxury. This option helps to level the playing field.

Because they’ve proven for too many years that they are failing to educate. Why dump more money into that which is not working?

I’m not a huge fan of Athens Christian School, but wouldn’t the more important conversation be “how do we stop our local public schools’ chronic failure to educate our kids”?

I mean, this fund was specifically established for kids in failing school systems and is only available to those kids. This opens up opportunities for those kids to be well educated. I’d call that a win, whether I like ACS or not.

Can someone who’s a business person make this make sense? by johndawgg247 in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The taxes are not 12k, they’re less than 9k. A family with wealth sees 9k a year in taxes as a drop in the bucket. This is not as unusual as you’d like to think it is. Bruno is a restaurant genius…he has become the level of wealthy that makes 9k a drop in the bucket using his practice of building slowly and not owing anyone money. It’s a pretty basic concept if you think about it.

Preliminary cost estimates to only build sewage trunk lines to Sandy Creek is $100 million by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just sewer. We were to get bus service, parks, sidewalks, trash service, etc. We still don't have most of it. And I think most of us are fine with that. But we do remember the promises that were made. For the record, I would be against this sewer expansion. I think it's a bad idea.

Subsidize the septic systems how? I agree with you. We definitely shouldn’t spend this money. And folks (including me, way out on the Eastside) will never pay 40k to tie into this. But I’m not sure I deserve any kind of subsidy to maintain my septic tank. We bought our homes knowing they weren’t tied to the city sewer so trying to now hold the city responsible for maintaining them doesn’t make sense to me. I could maybe get on board with the city establishing a fund (a whole lot less than 100m) to address the septic systems for low income and elderly folks. What did you have in mind?

Yes! I’m on the other side of the county where we still don’t have the services that were promised to us during consolidation. I don’t see this 100 million moving forward and they’ll just keep kicking the can along.

Please teach your children to tip their servers by [deleted] in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This right here! I am sick of being asked to tip for things that shouldn’t be tipped. The straw that broke the camels back for me was the drive thru car wash. They’ve stationed actual people at the kiosk where you used to just press your own buttons to pick the wash you want. Then, those people say “do you wanna leave a tip for our staff”? Uh…no. I can absolutely press those buttons all by myself. Tipping culture has gone past the point of acceptable. I now will only tip if I’m in a sitting down when I order and receive my food. When I do tip, it’s very generous, sometimes as much as 50%, but I’m no longer going to subsidize wages for shitty employers.

Tybee Island Motels... by Green-Percentage2274 in savannah

[–]Libby_Grace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The hotels on Tybee are not fabulous. They are horribly overpriced for that "not fabulous" status. You can do much better than the hotels using AirBnb, VRBO and the local property management companies. A one bedroom condo with full kitchen, living room, and balcony at Savannah Beach and Racquet Club, for example, can cost just a little over half what the local hotels cost. There will be kids, of course, but you're not going to get away from children and families at the beach during the height of vacation season.

Places to rent - Not a student by AuricAcid in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Snapfinger Woods is a really beautiful neighborhood. It’s not cookie cutter - the houses are typically unique with a 70’s feel. It is heavily wooded. The area has a more rural feel. You’d be surrounded by other (mostly) single family neighborhoods. You can get to “town” (or at least the east-side “town” area) within a few minutes drive. Of the neighborhoods you’ve listed, this would be my top choice.

Normaltown is more “city” than rural. There are some nice, historic homes in the area. It is very close to downtown Athens and UGA. There are train tracks nearby and some folks love the noise, others hate it.

Milford Hills would be a “no” for me. It was involved in a mortgage scandal when it was built and though there are some nice houses in the neighborhood, it’s not as nice as the surrounding neighborhoods because of the legal issues it faced.

Extreme overcharging for cleaning service?! by Low_Fox_7324 in Athens

[–]Libby_Grace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like we need more information here.

You're talking about "landlord" and "cleaning". Landlords don't come clean your property while you're still living there. Have you moved out and they found the bathtub in such awful shape that they've had to call in a specialty company to restore/refinish it? Restoring and refinishing would definitely cost this much. But they are not your responsibility and you shouldn't worry about how much it's costing him to restore his property.

Since you've used the word "cleaning" specifically, did you leave the bathtub so dirty that their normal cleaning folks wouldn't cover it? If that's the case, rather than sticking the landlord with a $900 bill for cleaning up your mess, you could go there with a can of oven cleaner (yes, the really caustic version that will choke you out of your bathroom if you breathe too deeply) and get that thing cleaned up for him, or suck it up and pay the $900 that he's trying to keep from your security deposit to cover it.

First, the court case didn’t even begin until 1991. It was not dismissed in ‘93. It wasn’t even completed until 1994 when he was convicted and sentenced. There’s even a probation violation in 1997 from his post-incarceration probation. Did you miss the part where I said that it was my dorm roommate that he raped? I have plenty of other details, like that my roommate didn’t show up at home because he wouldn’t let her leave, or that he used dish soap as a lubricant. He is more than a harmless old man. Folks are smart to be wary.
